Antigo Doctor and his wife charged with growing marijuana
Dr. Michael Moore and his wife, Kerry Moore, have been charged and since released from jail on charges of growing marijuana in their home in Antigo.
Rumor has it that the Dr.’s wife, Kerry, is planning to take the brunt of the blame so that her husband may keep practicing medicine.
Kerry is a physical therapist.
What baffles me about this whole deal is, WHY would a DOCTOR be growing marijuana? When I think of people growing and dealing pot, I think of people who are in need of money. I can’t see a Dr. and his physical therapist wife needing money?? What in the world is going on here? It seems pretty obvious that this wasn’t just for their own use. I would think that 5 pounds of pot would be excessive for a couple who were just using it themselves and not selling it. And doesn’t the healthcare system require drug screening of their employees?
I realize that this is a first offense for both the Dr. and his wife, but, a $5000 cash bond?? C’mon now, I would think the bond would have been a lot higher. Especially considering the fact that this is a doctor and he probably does have money and he probably also has the resources to flee.
Just my 2 cents.

There is an interesting blog post about this topic here. The blog talks about the idea that maybe Dr. Moore was growing marijuana for his sick patients, to help relieve their pain. Since Dr. Moore was an emergency room doctor, I don’t think this would apply. Even if it did, I doubt that Dr. Moore would admit it. I speculate that he won’t be making any public comments at all.
Besides that, the way that Langlade County handles their court system, it would be highly unlikely that ANYTHING Dr. Moore says would have an impact on the court. They do what they want here. It would be great to see someone actually “stand up” to the court system and government in Antigo. I don’t see that happening anytime in the near future.
Added note - in the Antigo Daily Journal today (11/21/07) there is an article stating that Dr. Moore is now able to go back to work at the Langlade Memorial Hospital. Dr. Moore had been suspended. He has not practiced medicine since the charges were filed. The Wisconsin State Board of Medical Examiners is permitting Dr. Moore to practice again. It is also stated in that article that Dr. Moore has a dependency problem and is getting treatment. So, after reading this, I still concede that Dr. Moore was not growing and/or selling marijuana for ailing patients as mentioned in the above named blog. Also, I am assuming that the article in the Antigo Daily Journal is, in fact, regarding Dr. Michael Moore, even the though the article states, Dr. Scott Moore. I believe this is just a typo of sorts, as I have not heard news of any other Doctors in Antigo getting charged with growing marijuana.

Rumor has it that Dr. Moore has again been suspended from his job at Langlade Memorial Hospital for failing a drug test.

During the preliminary hearing today, Dr. Moore and his wife, Kerry, both pleaded Not Guilty to the drug charges. The Judge stated that there was probable cause and the bound the pair over for trial.

The problem with this case is how the police measure the weight of confiscated plants. The dried, smokable, part of the cannabis plant has hardly any weight compared to the wet, fertile, plant in growth. The Antigo Daily Rumor report of the 5 lbs. of pot recovered in the raid leaves out this critical detail. If the doctor actually had 5 lbs. of dried and smokable dope, this would be a federal case and out of Langlade Counties jurisdiction. If our country would open its eyes and admit that marijuana prohibiton is a failure, then situations like this will no longer occur. I commend the doctor for protecting his family from the evils of black market drug dealers by choosing to grow a plant himself.

I happen to know that this is a VERY nice family. Everyone has problems and we are only hearing one side of the story. The whole truth will come out eventually and until it does, give these people a break by not judging them so harshly. Don’t kick them when they are down.

Yes, you are absolutely 1OO% right! Everyone should be treated the same under the law and even though we are all INNOCENT until proven guilty … it seems pretty clear that laws have been broken here. I only meant that because this case is pending, no one really knows the whole story. It’s really very sad, because there are two small children involved. I worry about them the most.

Silly question, but why would they even enter a not guilty plea? He had a secret room behind his closet with plants and guns and everything, so I don’t see how you can say that you aren’t guilty when everything is right there? I’ve also heard the he was allowed to come back to work, so the next time I break my leg, I’ll gladly drive to Wausau.

No such thing as a silly question. People usually plead not guilty in the beginning, because at this point, they have been charged with every single thing the police can legally come up with. If they plead guilty, they would be accountable for every charge. By pleading not guilty, it gives their lawyers a chance to negotiate vaious deals or lessen the charges. I guarantee that when this is all over, the charges against them will be a lot less. Is that fair? Not really, but, it’s the way the system works. He is a doctor, so there are probably ways to get out of some of the charges. You know … medicinal purposes, etc. I already drive to Wausau!

lol…Picasso…. I LOVE it! You seen quite knowledgeable about the “growing of the herb”. I don’t think the patient “medicinal use” theory will fly for Dr. Moore, either.I, too, found it strange that a doctor & a physical therapist would need to have a side job to make ends meet.
I have been a patient of his at the ER. He is a very nice man. As for the Scott/ Michael thing, I believe his name is Michael, with a middle name of Scott, which he goes by.
I can’t help but wonder who the snitch was, though. Been alot of that as of late….ever since Paris Jenkins underground greenhouse was discovered….Hmmm…. could that just be coincidence??
I personally do not indulge, as I am asthmatic,but if I had my way, I would bring back the days of Prohibition, make alcohol a MAJOR offense & legalize the herb. I know for a fact that alcohol has broken up miriad more marriages & homes than marijuane EVER will. ‘Nuff said….

I agree with Jane doe just because he is a dr doesn’t mean he should get special treatment. How do we know that he wasn’t under the influance of the drugs while he was treating his patients. I know for a fact that I have seen him on 1 or 2 accations.

You never will know wiether the Dr. was high at work and it wouldn’t have made a difference if he was. He is a fine man and a damned good doctor. He was arrested for growing a plant. I would rather see the police arrest some of the skanks that walk around this town half-naked before bothering a good man like Dr. Moore for growing a plant on his own property.

Dr Moore is in fact a nice man but that doesn’t make his actions right. Whether you think MJ should be legal or not the fact is MJ impairs your judgement, causes slower reaction, and several other things. It is a drug that impairs and saying it was ok for a Dr to be impaired while working on patients is crazy. He was in fact let go a second time from LMH for a dirty urinary test then rehired once again. This man worked on our children, family, and friends. He may have been a good doctor but he was impaired. LMH has allowed this Dr back into their facility not once but twice to practice medicine on patients. Will I take my children there? Absolutely not! I want my family to have the best medical care when something is wrong and whether Dr Moore is a good man or good Dr I do not want someone who is impaired to work on my family. The fact that LMH doesn’t care about this fact is sickening and should make a lot of people stop and think. If the Dr does have an addiction problem then I support him getting help and possibly a second chance. But when you’re given a second chance and blow it again…. Not Acceptable and I don’t care who you are.

Average citizen, do you have proof that Dr. Moore indeed failed a drug test? I believe if he did his bail would have been revoked. I see nothing of this on the court website.

Average*sshole, I have asked for proof of your lies before and have yet to see it. I know that if I was to be drug tested at LMH that my medical records would be private. I am going to guess that you magically have Dr. Moore’s personal medical history in front of you, that the “facts” you claimed can be proven, but I know that you are spreading slanderous lies about a good doctor. He was never known to be “high” at work. You my friend are a loser. If you have hard evidence of your claims, let me see it. If you have no evidence, get a life.

I agree John he probably was never high at work. But who’s to say that he was high at home, and got called into work? Driving stoned is worse than driving intoxicated, so he would’ve put people in danger on the roads, as well as whomever he dealt with once he got to LMH.

D2FY, as far as I know he never smoked pot in his life. He was charged as being party to a crime. The charges he faces are knowing of an illegal growing operation and allowing it to continue. His wife was charged with the actual crime of running the grow house. I know the policies of LMH very well. If the Dr. had indeed failed a drug test only himself and very few staff members would know about it, and that information would be considered highly confidential. This entire conversation is about rumors and lies. Once again friend, where is your proof?

DF2Y, I am not sure that you understand what being “on call” is. If you work a job that requires you to be “on call” you are paid to be near a phone and available to work during the time that you are “on”. When you are “off” there is no getting called in unless there is an emergency and you agree to come in. I work with hazardous products in a field that requires great attention to detail, but when I am not at work, smoking a joint is a great way for me to relax.

If you think it relaxes you, go for it. But scientifically, here are the facts: weed changes the chemistry in your brain, making your reactions slower, giving you memory problems, distorted perception, difficulty problem solving, loss of coordination, and almost completely shuts down your ability to learn new information. It also increases your heart rate and blood pressure, which puts you at a severe risk of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans today. Marijuana is 50% worse than regular tobacco when it comes to tar, so your breathing gets worse faster than smoking cigarettes. And the worst one if you’re a guy? It leads to lower reproductive cell counts and can even lead to impotence.
It’s your call and your body, you’re the one that has to deal with the effects. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m sure there are other things you can do to relax than smoking a plant that decreases your life expectancy by almost half.

Marijuana should not be illegal if it is straight and does not contain any other chemicals,I work in the medical field and have seen this drug do wonders for those people that suffer from cancer and such and I think honestly that it should be a choice too smoke or not,I am not saying I would ever do it but if somebody else wants too that is fine as long as they are not pressuring others too do it or bringing it around my children,We all have our opinions on this and no one opinion is better than the next,

I’ve heard through the rumor mill that Dr Moore is back to work-must not have been as bad a test as Averagecitizen’s facts state. I can’t imagine they would re-hire him after being let go a second time. So either he was never let go, or his test wasn’t as dirty as she thinks it was.

If it was legal, it would be OK. However, we have laws in this country and we have to follow them. Marijuana is illegal and the law is the law is the law is the law … if you choose to break the law, you will likely be caught and punished. The saddest thing in this case is the impact this will have on this couple’s two adorable little girls. Very sad.

The fine doctor is paying for his crime. He is charged with the following:
1. Manufacture/Deliver THC (1000-2500 grams)
3. Maintain Drug Trafficking Place
4. Possess Drug Paraphernalia
These charges are serious felonies. Even if his wife takes the blame, he is still guilty of being an accesory for allowing it(grow room) to opperate with his knowledge. He is a great doctor. I have never seen any evidence that he failed a UA to begin with. As far as anyone knows, he has never smoked pot in his life. Please think before spreading malicious lies as fact.

If you read the update in the original article, it says this: “It is also stated in that article that Dr. Moore has a dependency problem and is getting treatment.”
So, apparently he had admitted to some type of dependency problem, and I think it would be a fair assumption that it would be pot.

They already delayed his trial, this is turning into the same thing as the Steve Van Vleit situation. They kept pushing the trial back, and until recently (bail jumping or whatever), he was on the street just living his life. It would be a major blow to the justice system if they delay it to the point that charges get dropped/lowered.

Of course I have gone over the speed limit! No one is perfect and certainly not I. When I was caught, I apologized to the officer, got my ticket and paid it. I knew I deserved it for breaking the law. I don’t judge the Moores, or anyone else. I happen to think they are a nice family and I feel genuinely terrible for all of them. I don’t want ANYONE to go to jail, especially anyone with small children. My point is that MARIJUANA IS ILLEGAL. They can argue it’s benefits all thay want, but it’s still illegal. If you get caught, you will have face the consequences under the law and you cannot argue why it “should” be legal in court, because it’s not. In my opinion, I’m glad it’s not legal. That’s all I’m saying. But, I honestly wish the Moore’s nothing but the best.

Personally I believe Dr. Moore is a adequate doctor. He saved my friends life due to another doctor’s mistake. But this is his job. Like it or not doctors are held to a higher standard. Their professionalism is scrutinized in every aspect of their life. Every patient he has ever treated, every medicine he has ever prescribed, every medical mistake he has ever made is now open for judgement. How does that affect our hospital and our community?
