Antigo Doctor and his wife charged with growing marijuana
Dr. Michael Moore and his wife, Kerry Moore, have been charged and since released from jail on charges of growing marijuana in their home in Antigo.
Rumor has it that the Dr.’s wife, Kerry, is planning to take the brunt of the blame so that her husband may keep practicing medicine.
Kerry is a physical therapist.
What baffles me about this whole deal is, WHY would a DOCTOR be growing marijuana? When I think of people growing and dealing pot, I think of people who are in need of money. I can’t see a Dr. and his physical therapist wife needing money?? What in the world is going on here? It seems pretty obvious that this wasn’t just for their own use. I would think that 5 pounds of pot would be excessive for a couple who were just using it themselves and not selling it. And doesn’t the healthcare system require drug screening of their employees?
I realize that this is a first offense for both the Dr. and his wife, but, a $5000 cash bond?? C’mon now, I would think the bond would have been a lot higher. Especially considering the fact that this is a doctor and he probably does have money and he probably also has the resources to flee.
Just my 2 cents.
*********UPDATE**************
There is an interesting blog post about this topic here. The blog talks about the idea that maybe Dr. Moore was growing marijuana for his sick patients, to help relieve their pain. Since Dr. Moore was an emergency room doctor, I don’t think this would apply. Even if it did, I doubt that Dr. Moore would admit it. I speculate that he won’t be making any public comments at all.
Besides that, the way that Langlade County handles their court system, it would be highly unlikely that ANYTHING Dr. Moore says would have an impact on the court. They do what they want here. It would be great to see someone actually “stand up” to the court system and government in Antigo. I don’t see that happening anytime in the near future.
Added note – in the Antigo Daily Journal today (11/21/07) there is an article stating that Dr. Moore is now able to go back to work at the Langlade Memorial Hospital. Dr. Moore had been suspended. He has not practiced medicine since the charges were filed. The Wisconsin State Board of Medical Examiners is permitting Dr. Moore to practice again. It is also stated in that article that Dr. Moore has a dependency problem and is getting treatment. So, after reading this, I still concede that Dr. Moore was not growing and/or selling marijuana for ailing patients as mentioned in the above named blog. Also, I am assuming that the article in the Antigo Daily Journal is, in fact, regarding Dr. Michael Moore, even the though the article states, Dr. Scott Moore. I believe this is just a typo of sorts, as I have not heard news of any other Doctors in Antigo getting charged with growing marijuana.
************UPDATE 1/31/08****************
Rumor has it that Dr. Moore has again been suspended from his job at Langlade Memorial Hospital for failing a drug test.
************UPDATE 3/7/08****************

marijuana and has received 30 days in jail, 2 years of probation,

***************UPDATE 06/09/11*****************
Antigo’s Pot Doctor get his felony lowered
******** NOTE WORTH MENTIONING************
Doctor Moore now seems to be using a variation of his name, he is listed as an Emergency Room Doctor for Langlade Hospital as Dr. Scott Moore on the website for Langlade Hospital. So we will now refer to him as Dr. Michael Scott Moore. This also explains why the Antigo Daily Journal had referred to him as Dr. Scott Moore.

The weight that was first listed is not accuarte. When police report the weight of confinscated plants, they take the wet weight of the entire plant: stalks, leaves, roots etc. The final dried smokable product is only a portion of the original reported weight. I believe that the Dr. was only growing for himself.
OMG this is a joke! 30days !!!!!!!!!!!!
I find this sentence to be outrageous!!! As with any other “high profile” type case, I believe that a precedent should be set. The “high profile” cases should be made examples. These are supposed to be people who are upstanding citizens with morals and values. I think the Judge and the DA are looking at it from totally the opposite side. He wasn’t a bad guy, which is what it said in the ADJ or something like that, well, I am sure that MANY of the people who have been caught with drugs aren’t “BAD GUYS” either. At one point, there was mention that the Dr. himself supposedly said he had a personal drug problem, and now, he says he was growing it for his wife because she has stomach problems. I am not buying that for one minute. And which is it? It is just another example of how things are in Antigo …..sickening!
Yes there is selective law enforcement in Antigo. I know of people in simuluar situations who got 60, 90, and 120 days for identical charges.
The questions we should ask ourselves is..
Is the person a violent drug offender?? I think not.
Is the person a danger to society where he should be locked up? I think outside of his profession.. NO
Was he distributing the drug to others? As far as I can tell NO.
I think 30 days for a first offense is fine.. .. If there is proof he is an addict, the medical board should pull his license for life. His profession should allow ZERO tollerance for that kind of behavior.
I also believe our prisons, and jails are overcrowded enough to keep non-violent drug offenders locked up. Not too mention it is expensive and we taxpayers pay for that. As far as his profession, that is an issue that should be brought up to the medical board. Sorry to offer a different opinion but if we all had the same views, it would be a boring planet..
u can thank your reelected DA uttke. i would hope someone else would have taken into the consideration of endangering the kids. hope he does service influencing the kids to do good things with their minds
Um… “lifes not fair”, your Uttke crack is unwarranted. A little fact check here, from the Antigo Daily Journal’s story on April 9:
—- quote —
Describing the case as a premeditated act, Uttke recommended that the doctor serve a 90 day sentence. He explained that the term was consistent with recommendations provided in similar drug manufacturing cases and strongly countered statements that it was solely based on the defendant’s occupation.
“It is not my intent to cause suffering for this family,” Uttke said. “It is my intent to offer an appropriate sentence for someone who committed a crime.
“If someone violates the law, they will receive a penalty,” he added.
—- unquote —-
Looks to me like the 30 day sentence was NOT Mr. Uttke’s doing. Do you want to apologize here publicly, or will you be sending him a personal note?
there is no need for an apology. what goes on behind closes doors is always left out, dont always depend on what u read in the ADJ. the judge is just as much at fault.
Ah! I see — you’ll believe whatever you want, regardless of how the evidence stacks up. So, what did the Easter Bunny bring you today?
probably more than he brought u.
I don’t see the concept of endangering kids? Someone who smokes pot in the privacy of their own home, without bothering anyone.. A crime? That’s probably a tenth of the population of Antigo.. Maybe someone should have done a drug test on Judge Jensen 15 years ago.. LOL
Picking on a dead guy, classy!
He’s endangering everyone, IF he is coming to work high.
The court has no jurisdiction on his employment. The job of the Court is to determine if he broke the law.. And what is penalty for breaking it. The court system should not discriminate on race, income, employment, the way your dress or the way you look. Courts are to follow the Constitution.
If you have a problem with his employment take it to the Medical board. It looks like they already made a decision with his employment. He stays. End of story.
If doctor moore lived 75 miles east of antigo in michigan he would have got no time in jail or fines. it is legal to grow pot for medical reason it there new state law as of nov08 so I say lets free Moore and stop jailing him for where he lives WE are all behind you DOC.
I don’t know about the rest of u but the idea of my doctor being high when he examined me scared the h*** out of me………I feel his punishment was way to easy on him……..he is a medical professional and knows the effects of marijuana use…….and he knows that if effects your judgment and slows your reflexes…….I wonder how many times he drove while high……..if they found 5lbs worth and he and his wife claim they were not distributing it that says to me that they used a h*** of alot of it and had to have been high most of their waking moments……kinda makes me wonder if he was examining patients and making life or death decisions while high………as far as where he lives…..he is a doctor and had the means to move……he chose to live here and needs to follow the laws just like the rest of us……….
well if i was to get caught with five pounds of weed .and growing in a home i would own they would take my home and send me to prison . just go’s to show you wake up people ‘duh’ open those eyes.
I cant believe what a bunch of imbeciles we have in antigo–worried about pot but not the alcohol problems we have in our country. so he gew his own? SO WHAT!!we have 5 people in town that have been arrested 4 or more times for dui and even had some that killed others by driving under the influence! you people are idiots!
Maybe just SOME people are idiots, Shadyjim. Other communities, Wausau for example, have a little more focus on what matters. See http://php.wisinfo.com/mktg/pledge_wdh/index.php
We should be able to get 4, maybe 5, people in Antigo to sign up….
I’d sign up. How can anyone be so stupid? If you drink and drive you WILL get caught and you WILL get fined and possibly go to jail! Even worse than this you could kill someone! Just DON’T DO IT! However, just because some people are imbeciles, doesn’t mean there should be no concern about pot. That is also illegal whether you like it or not.
DDDDD, agreed. I would also point out that driving or riding without wearing a seatbelt in a car or truck is also illegal. That means we must be surrounded by criminal imbeciles, because I’m the only one I ever see wearing a seatbelt.
Look everyone he was growing pot for cryimng out loud! that I can handle now theres the meth heads cooking meth right at our doorsteps but noone seems to see this! As for that comment about Judge J. “RIP” he was dying! He was the best judge we had in this $hit hole town so lets not put his name out there! Our DA certainly has skelotons in his closet and he picks and chooses who he wants to give “deals” to. But for the most part hes done a good job geeting the meth and heroin off the streets for that I thank Him. Thats all I have to say on this subject
I agree with Just a girl. And Dr.Moore is one of the best ER doctors Antigo has. Also why the hell is anyone talking about Judge J? Let the man rest for god’s sake.As far as the doc growing weed, the only reason anyone is so concerned about it is because he has the letters MD after his name….If some plain ol Joe was doing it nobody would say a damn word.Let it rest ppl,did he ever offer too u or did he ever seem high at work? NO? Didn’t think so now let’s leave him alone.
