Mike’s Service Center – Superior Street

This place has been an eyesore for years now. It stumps me that the City doesn’t make him clean it up. My guess is that he is on a government board of some type or something like that. I would also guess that he is allowed to leave his “junk” sitting there because he has a car dealers license. This is just ridiculous to me. Even if he would move his cars around and pull out the weeds, it would help. The Antigo Police has threatened local residents to remove cars and trucks on their property that are not registered, or they will be fined, so how is this any different? I think something should be done about it – maybe he needs to get fined from the City! It makes Antigo look bad.

UPDATE

The excerpt below is from the Minutes of the following City Committee – This is a joke – Bill Brandt being commended for the progress being made at the Schilcher property on Superior Street – What progress? Looks like the same junkyard that it has for years? -

City of Antigo
Finance, Personnel & Legislative Committe Meeting
June 20, 2007

15. Any Other Matters (No action may be taken on the items discussed)
Alderperson Balcerzak identified the residents at 234 Superior Street have been holding a perpetual yard sale and have several items on the boulevard every day. To which Chief Brandt advised he would have his department take care of it. Alderperson Balcerzak also commended Chief Brandt on the progress being made with the Schilcher property on Superior Street.

Ummm..Maybe you should check your addresses. 234 Superior St is not Mikes Service Center, it’s a house that was having a constant rummage sale. If you drive past Mikes enough to notice the junk, then you would have noticed the rummage sale.

  2. admin says:

I think if you read the excerpt from the minutes of the meeting again, I believe there are 2 different things being discussed here – the yard sale and Mike’s Service center. The 234 Superior Street address is not Mike’s Service Center, I agree with that, but, when they refer to the “Schilcher property”, I believe they are referring to Mike’s. The owner of Mike’s Service Center is Mike Schilcher.

  3. Sherry says:

I have to agree here. Why is it home owners are threatened with fines if they don’t clean up their yards but yet Mike Shilcher can get away with his business looking like this. Imagine what the people going through this town think when they see that. And this is on one of our main roadways into this town!!!

  4. pass employee says:

MIKE”S SERVICE CENTER, Yes, the station and grounds are an eye sore! Yes, the cars have been Moved around and the weeds have been pulled and flowers were planted, in the past. Did that help the eye sore, NO! Mike Schilcher, is a Kind man and Allowed the people of the city and area to CHARGE for the work he performed and pay when they could. The Main reason the junk is still there is the people have not Paid their Bill. Yes mike has been fined for the junk more then twice, most of the junk was removed, but it regrew. To help Mike schilcher and his business, get the people to pay their “BILLs” this would help.

  5. Mike Matousek says:

The primary reason why this is allowed to continue by the city is that the property, for some reason that predates me, is zoned industrial. This fact, in addition to the reasons listed here (that Mr. Schilcher cannot move some of the cars because he doesn’t own them, and that he does claim that he is doing legitimate business at the location dealing in cars/parts/etc) accounts for why he has not been forced to clean the area up. The only way to really deal with it would be to force him to sell to the city (known as eminent domain), but this is something the city avoids if at all possible because of its negative political ramifications.

  6. tinker says:

mr. schilcher can rid himself of these vehicles if he tried. i know this for a fact because it happened to me somewhere when i did not pay for my vehicle to be serviced they had it towed and it became the responsibility of the tower after so long. i did not care for the car wasnt worth sticking alot of money into at that time. and i had a new car within a few weeks after. this place was a junk or salvage yard i believe by pewaukee or some place with a similar name.

  7. Alexis says:

He can file a mechanic’s lien on these vehicles so that he can dispose or resell them to recoup his money for those who have not paid.

  8. shelly says:

look at some of the places that are for rent that has a slum landlord then then also not just at the bissness

  9. Simplemind says:

Another eyesore is the Cutlass. I believe 900 block of Superior might be just outside the city limits. Tthe place is looking condemed. Its sort of sad how it used to be one of the finest places to stay in Antigo..

  10. shadyjim says:

try going to the council meeting or quit your whining. i dont see very many people there. not as many as i see pissing and moaning all the time!

  11. DDDDD says:

I heard that the Cutlass has a new owner who is doing extensive renovations on the place. When I drive by I do see activity going on. Maybe they will get it up and running again. Does anyone know what the story is on this?

  12. just a thought says:

The cutlass was bought by radar roy (of the radar base on HH). He has been doing wk on it to try and get it reopened.

  13. Ron says:

This whole town is an eyesore, why do the big trucks amd out of towners speed through downtown everyday and not get picked up. Are we waiting for a tragic accident

  14. donna says:

I think this town is full of uptight snotty stuck up B***hes ans As****es…ya all must think you are better then everyone else. Really once you buy property it should be yours to do as you like with. End of story

  15. Rod says:

I agree with Donna. For a little redneck town, there are some snobby people here .
Mike is a great and honest mechanic who has helped me on numerous ocasions and this is how he gets paid for his kindness to others? Snobs!!!!!

  16. lea says:

you know you got some nerve talking $hit about mikes when he is the number one mechanic in town who is the only one that will work with you if you cant afford the work thats done to your truck or car so why dont you all leave him alone because thats wrong look at the world alot of mechanics wont work out a payment plan they want there money up front and mike knows his work not like these other a$$holes around town so leave mike alone atleast talk about the people propertys that look like $hit not because of what customers did to mike not paying there bills

  17. lea says:

and ron i also agree the cops dont do $hit around here for the speeders they worry about is other nnonsense i could’nt have said it any better

  18. Ben says:

The Antigo City Council has taken action to condemn the old Super America gas station as a blighted eye sore. They mention it is an “attractive nuisance”. I guess that makes Mikes Service Station an “unattractive nuisance”.

  19. Who cares says:

As much as many places are an eyesore the thing that makes this country different than others is our ability to own property. No one tells you how to keep the outside of your car looking or your cloths etc. Once you buy something it is yours to do with as you please. It is a business and the only person that is hurt by it looking like that is the owner because others potential customers will look the other way. I myself have had work done there and never went back because contrary to what some have stated here Mike is not a very good mechanic and my experience is that you will have to get it fixed right somewhere else. That being said it is his property and what he does with it is up to him. If you don’t like it then don’t do business there.

Also he is not letting people charge because he is such a nice guy. He lets them charge because that is the only business he can get. The people that pay when the work is done will not go there because if he cares that little about his property then do you really think he cares about the quality of workmanship he is preforming on your car?

    This makes me so sad…
First, please let me say, Antigo has greater concerns than Mike’s Service Center. I recently had car troubles while passing through Antigo, as a woman with limited knowledge of vehicles this can be very intimidating. Mike was kind, knowlegable, and fast. He fixed my vehicle and was very accomodating to me and my children.. As to the aesthetics of the business, who really cares, It’s a service garage located in in Antigo, Wi.. Having lived out of the area for almost 10yrs. It never ceases to amaze me upon my visits home what a snotty little, borish town Antigo is. I get the Redneck charm….However, y’all slap a little rouge and liptick on the town, (i.e. Covantage’s 6th ave improvements, A new pool, a path..) and y’all think Antigo is an Uber sophisticate,metropolis..
Here is some advice..you need to get out more..travel beyond north central Wisconsin and see what real eyesores and slums look like.
And leave HONEST businessmen (of which are few in Antigo) alone..
AND lastly, instead of concerning yourself with eyesores in Antigo, blog about the moral fiber and conduct of the good people in Antigo.

If the old 5th avenue downtown buildings had been maintained and restored to a architectural standard that would look attractive, charming and keeping an original old look.. ….trust me ….tourist…and investors with deep pockets
travelling thru the city would most certainly spend their hard earned dollars
in the downtown 5th ave district of antigo…return on investment sustainable and value grows. Evict the dead beat property owners if they can’t afford the responsibility of maintaining the downtown to its proper morally rightful condition. Although its not the dead beat owners fault that the city planners gave them the green light to disfigure the 5th avenue district. This is not the type of investment that grows value.
Its immoral and negligence to let this situation continue. It will eventually
attract more criminals to the community….law enforcement will get more difficult and expensive for the community at large. The drug culture will
grow here too as a result. Crime will always follow the drugs.

At some point in the city’s history the city planners caved to the path of least resistance …no economic standards were implemented to keep the old original architectual charm or form… those original beautiful buildings defined the community and those beautiful original structures were somehow tragically and haphazardly disfigured years ago..
….no planning for the future…City planners need to travel around the country and the state of Wisconsin to see the difference where proper strategic planning and investment bears wonderful fruit (profits and value).

Unfortunately….the 5th ave district looks like an urban ghetto…feels like an urban ghetto …..do you really feel safe walking around the creepy place. The re-routing of highway 64 away from this terrible eyesore was a good decision in keeping the community’s image somewhat respectful.
Walk outside the steps of the post office and you can see the gang graffiti painted on the wall of one building … a disgusting tragic image.. of urban blight.. Once the cages and burglar bars are installed on the 5th ave storefront windows…it will be time to raze the downtown…you need to look at Detroit . Its truly unfortunate to see the economic decay.

Its time for some real and serious redevelopment and cultural renewal ….start by razing the entire 5th ave ghetto….and watch how the deep pocket investors start visiting Antigo! and running out the criminal deadbeats and drug pushers. What will be the next criminal scandal here ….to impact the children.
