Langlade County Jail – former inmate complaint

I realize that being an ex-inmate at the jail discredits me, since no one wants to trust or believe someone with a criminal record. I have never understood this type of thinking, but I know it exists. If someone drove drunk, does that make them a liar? If someone got into a bar fight, does that make them a liar? Do you have family members or friends who have been in jail? Are they liars? In order to make my point here, just because society labels convicts as liars, doesn’t mean that they are.

With that said, I will tell my story about the problems with the Langlade County Jail and their procedures. I realize that being in jail strips your equal rights for the most part, but, according to the laws of this country, inmates are still to be treated humanely. One of those laws also states that inmates have the right to be free of pain.

At one point, I was required to be jailed with huber privileges and before my stay I was to contact the jail nurse about any current prescriptions that I would need while I was there. While this was fine by me, after talking with the nurse, I was told that I could not receive my pain medication because the jail had “too many problems with it”. This medication was Vicodin and it was prescribed to me by my physician. I was confused as to what she meant, well, apparently after speaking more with her, it came to my attention that the “problems” she was referring to was the medication “disappearing” while in the jail. So, in other words, people who work at the jail are stealing Vicodin from the inmates. This totally shocked me! Instead of dealing with the problem of their employees, they had decided not to give out pain medication to the inmates. How could this be? What kind of government operated facility was this?

So, needless to say, while I was an inmate, I had to go without my prescribed medication. So much for being pain free! When I was set to be released, another problem arose. When I had gone in, I had given the nurse the Vicodin that I had, along with Blood Pressure pills, and cholesterol pills. When I was released, all my medications were there, EXCEPT for the Vicodin that I had brought in. Since I was released at midnight, I would have to wait until the next day to contact the nurse about this. So, that is what I did and guess what she said!? Your Vicodin was in with your other medications and she was accusing me of lying about it. Once again I found this to be outrageous. Either the nurse didn’t put the Vicodin in with my other meds, or someone took them from the time she packed them up to when I was released. Needless to say, nothing ever came of this. Who would believe me over the jail nurse, right?

It is just outrageous to me that they can get away with this sort of thing. You would think they would want to catch whoever is stealing meds in the jail – but, apparently not. They would rather just not give you your prescriptions than to deal with the real problem.

There was another guy that was in my cell during my stay who also had pain meds prescribed to him and they wouldn’t give him his either. He was bold enough to throw a fit about it, go to the emergency room and get more. He threatened the nurse and called his own doctor, who then talked to the nurse and eventually the guy did get his pain meds given to him.

I just do not understand how the nurse at the jail can make the decision as to whether or not you will get your prescribed medications? She is not a Doctor and she shouldn’t be acting like one.

I would love to read comments on this and it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if other former inmates have had similar issues.

OH MY GOD ! I HAVE HEARD THE VERY SAME THING YOU HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT. THE NURSE AT THE JAIL NOT GIVING THE PRESCRIBED PAIN MEDS. THE GUY DIDN’T WANT TO MAKE A FUSS ABOUT IT BECAUSE HE WAS GETTING OUT IN A COUPLE DAYS. I THINK THERE SHOULD BE AN INVESTIGATION ABOUT HER. IT WOULD BE SO EASY FOR HER TO STEAL AND GET AWAY WITH IT JUST LIKE YOU SAID.

  2. victim of A.P.D. says:

I too suffered at the hands of the local authorities and spent many days putting up with rather nasty treatment as well as several bills that they added. In the end, the false charges were dropped, but there is now a record on me that has hurt any chance of improving my position in this town. There is a definite need for a full investigation into the department !

  3. Well, needless to say we too have known numerous people that were in the Langlade County Jail, (it is a rather small town) that received this same, unjust treatment. People of power in this community do as they please, to whoever they please. Young police officers here drink with underage ladies, strip at parties, (while some capture this on video) break laws to arrest people, lie about evidence, reports, reasonable causes, etc.
I was personally pulled over by an officer for having an air freshener hanging from my mirror. A drug canine was randomly called to the scene where he walked around my vehicle. The officers then searched my vehicle for no reason. At one point they picked something up off of my floor and tasted it, the officer spitting whatever it was out, said “No!” The first officer searched me, made me lift up my shirt and shake my bra. Why you may ask? I could not answer that question. Needless to say while the officer flirted with me, I flirted back.

  4. Sherry says:

You know that there are people who you can call to have the police investigated. It was printed in the shoppers guide sometime this summer. Maybe if more people would do this something would get done. But we who live here have to live with the fear that they will relaliate on us. So where does this leave us? I have also heard things about our jail here and fortunately I have never had to and pray I never will experience this. We all need to start taking a stand and have something done!

**The article in the Shoppers Guide that is referred to above can be found HERE**

  5. antigo's finest says:

not to mention that half of the police officers that are arresting people for drunk driving are under the influence themselves…ive known a few police officers that are well known in the bar scene and stay there until its time to go to work..i think that drunk driving is inexcusable to everyone..but i think it sets a far worse example that our police officers that are assigned to serve and protect are stealing peoples prescriptions and driving drunk while on duty..those who are meant to “uphold the law” should first look at themselves before passing judgement on anyone

  6. Lisa says:

I agree with some of the comments made about Antigo Police. I realize some people are treated very “unfairly” however one should be careful what one does. Nobody goes to jail in Antigo for no reason. Most of the time if you are in jail you deserve to be there.
However, I have heard many rumors regarding the “younger generation” police officers. I heard just the other day about one of the officers being in trouble for having young girls in his squad car. Gimme a break that could be one of our teenage daughters. It would be whos word against whos. What is unfortunate is that these guys are ruining it for the good officers who actually are doing their jobs and risking their lives everyday. I really wonder what this city is coming to.

  7. ignnorant people suck! says:

police staying in the bars until and stay there until they go to work…not illegal-so long as they are not drinking. Then they go to work and drive drunk, come on! How about filing a complaint at the time instead of posting bogus rumors!

If one of the officers got in trouble for having “young girls” in his squad car they would probably not be working around here anymore.

and then to hear that an officer picked something off the floor of a car and tasted it-whoa! That is really believable. Someone watches way too much TV! Cops don’t taste drugs to see if they are drugs, not to mention that I’m sure nobody with a brain would pick something off the floor of a suspected druggies car and taste it>

I know the police department has video cameras in their cars, I would love to see some of these bogus accusations on video and see what really happened.

I would love to see the law that says inmates have a right to be free from pain. For one, laws don’t deal with your rights, the Constitution does. I can see the law in the State books now:

ss855.34: Every inmate in the State Prison system has the right to be pain free.

    get real!

  8. ignorant person says:

There are many lawsuits about prison inmates being treated inhumanely. Do you think that the States would be providing medical care for prisoners if they didn’t have to? Whether it’s a law or a Constitutional Right doesn’t matter. If you read the entire post, the whole point, (I think) is that the nurse allowed the meds to come in and then denied giving them – when the inmate was released, the meds were nowhere to be found. With the nurse actually stating that there is a “problem” with pain meds at the jail. I think you are completely missing the point of the post.

I would guess that either you are a policeman, or married to one, or you are just a totally naive person who lives in denial. How many cops have been in the news lately for killing their wives and committing other crimes? Too many! What about Tyler Peterson for one, yeah, he was a great cop!

I think if you were able to sit down and have an honest conversation with some of the retired Antigo police, they would tell you about the favoritism and corruption.

Your comment about the “young girls” thing makes me laugh. So you are saying that if that was going on, then that cop wouldn’t be working “around here” anymore – so, what, they would ship him somewhere else!?? I would certainly hope he would be fired, not sent away!

Your spelling just goes to show that maybe you are the “ignnorant” one:)

  9. ignorant people suck! says:

oops on the spelling, accidently hit the n twice…

The original post was probably a pill shopper whining because they got busted (sarcasm-not being naive). If they came up short on their Vicodin, why didn’t they contact their doctor and get a refill? Wild guess here, but maybe they “lose” or someone “steals” their Vicodin all the time and can’t get it refilled whenever they want anymore. Or maybe someone in the jail did steal it. The original post talks about a how they were wronged. Did they ever follow up with a complaint? Probably not, instead they simply accuse someone else of stealing their property to help faciliate rumors. Maybe it was accidently given to the wrong inmate, maybe it was lost, maybe there was some other slight in responsibility amongst jail employees.

How many people besides cops are in the paper for killing their wives, and committing other crimes? Bottom line is that every profession has people that make mistakes. Peterson’s problem wasn’t that he was a cop, it was that he was drunk, immature, and had a weapon. Thank god we don’t have to pay for him to go to prison.

I guess since I support most of the things that cops do I must be a policeman or married to one. Following this logic, anyone that doesn’t support them must be a criminal. I’m sure there was a large amount of corruption in the police force years ago. There probably still is some today, and I hope any officer that is corrupt gets fired for it.

I’m far from niave and I don’t live in denial-only reality. It just irritates me when people in this town blame everyone else and don’t take responsibilty for their own actions.

  10. Alexis says:

To all of you how think these comments are being posted by paranoids who”watch way too much tv” you are oblivious to things that are actually going on.
Spend some time talking with people in the community and find out about all the people who have been stopped for bogus reasons and harrassed due to “anonymous tips”.
Is it really so hard to believe that these things are really going on???
I say no…young girls in a police car? Absolutely! Have we all forgotten about the “young girl” a few years ago who was having ongoing relations with an officer while he was on duty and what they did in and on his police cruiser??
And as far as prisoners go…it is a constitutional right for them to be treated fairly and humanly. Humanly falls under the right to be treated for injury and illness. And to bring medication into the jail you need to have a current prescription in your name. You can’t just have drugs handed out to you that you brought in a plastic baggie! AND just because you are in jail does not mean you do not have an actual illness or injury. Suddenly their health issues become irrelevant when they have to serve time???? How ignorant is that???
And complaints…have you or someone you know ever filed a complaint against anyone in a position of power in a small town? Have you ever experienced retaliation? To file a complaint, especially about the police department, you need to file to a higher power outside the city and hope it doesn’t come back to haunt you. You need time, money, patience and connections…Something most of us are short on.
The point is that improper things happen everywhere, everyday and it’s not always a quick and easy fix. For people who think this happens only on tv need to open their eyes because it’s happening in your own tiny town.

  11. ddddd says:

When I first moved here, I was witness to something very illegal. My first reaction was of course to call the police. I asked an elderly neighbor before I did, to get her thoughts and make sure I had everything straight. I was unsure of some of the names and she’s lived here all her life and knows all of the people involved. She told me I was CRAZY to call the police and that some of them were related to the people involved in the crime. She said mind your own business. If you get involved YOU will be sorry. Nothing will be done to these people and YOU will find yourself being pulled over and harrassed for all kinds of things. I never called, but regret it at times. I don’t want any trouble, but when I think of the things people get away with……

  12. ignorant people suck! says:

First of all, it is not illegal to have a young girl in a squad car. Do you know why the girl was in there, or are you just assuming that the officer is having sex with her because she is in there with him? Maybe it was his daughter, maybe it was someone he just arrested, maybe there is some other logical explanation. However, since you hate the police they are doing something bad because there is a young girl in the car! Once again, ignorant! Don’t spread rumors because of something you don’t have a clue about.

The officer that was with the young girl (8 years ago now?) was punished harshly! More so by far than any other citizen that would have done the same thing. I agree with the punishment, but it is time to get over it. For the record, she was almost 18 and nobody else would have even been prosecuted for it. If we are going to continue to crucify the police for something that happened that long ago, perhaps we should crucify the male leaders of our community every time they talk to a “young boy” and assume they are getting oral sex from them. Hasn’t that happened before?

Good luck filing a complaint to a higher power! You need to first file a complaint at the local level or the higher powers won’t even consider it. Also remember, because you think something is wrong, not everyone else will. You may even find a few people to side with you. Something you think is major may not be to someone else and that could be why nothing is done, or maybe someone just gets talked to. Or maybe they did get in trouble and it is none of your business beyond that.

  13. Alexis says:

I DID NOT SAY THE GIRLS IN THE POLICE CAR WERE HAVING SEX WITH THE OFFICER NOR DO I “HATE” THE POLICE!!!

I was referring to the comment above regarding an officer with them in the car. He would not “have got in trouble” if those girls were there in an official police capacity.

And spreading rumors??? Where did you get that??

I’m not holding the police responsible for any previous officers acts. My comment was to show you proof that these kind of things do happen and they happen here, not just in TV dramas.

For someone who defends the police so much, I’m surprised at your comment about how severely that officer was punished. I mean he was having an improper relationship on your time and your dime. He couldn’t “Serve and Protect” when he was romancing her, now could he?

As far as filing to a higher a power…there is always a higher power to report to. They were created for just these reasons. In case you forgot this is a government for the people, by the people so if I have a every right to file a complaint to whomever I choose when I think something is wrong. Maybe if more people did we wouldn’t be here having these conversations!

Furthermore, it IS my business to know what goes on in my home town and what the “powers that be” are doing and not doing, especially when those things are questionable, illegal or improper.

  14. Average Citizen says:

I pray you never need the police for anything Alexis because I personally don’t believe you deserve their help. To bad you didn’t put all this effort and time into helping the police fight crime in our communittee instead of doing what you can to bash our officer’s. Personally I think you are not just a concerned citizen but someone who is angry that she almost got caught!!! Our officer’s have done more for our communittee then you obviously know and again I thank them…. Thank you ignorant people suck for trying to explain things to her and for standing up for the people who in fact do protect and serve our communittee because without them I know what would happen.

  15. jistme says:

Has anyone even tried to file a complaint or do we all just assume nothing will get done because we don’t have money or the power? Try to do something and get shot down first, then come complain to the rest of us. I’m sick of hearing about poor you and how nobody feels sorry for you and you are a victim all the time. Not once have I heard you give an example of when you tried to file a complaint and had the door slammed in your face.

  16. Sherry says:

I personally know Tyler Peterson’s mother and as close as she was to him, she definitely didn’t see that coming (the October murders in Crandon). There are good cops and bad cops everywhere in this world and some just snap under the pressure and stress of life, as we all do from time to time. Some just go further with their emotions than most of us could ever imagine. I also know some exceptional Antigo cops, one of them is my cousin, and they are wonderful people who protect us from drunk drivers and drug addicts in this town, of which there are too many these days.

  17. Sherry says:

Please don’t label them all for mistakes of a few.

  18. getreal says:

i would like for most of you to realize that every town has at least one bad apple whether it be in the police dept. or any of the politicians in the town. look at the whole picture and not the words. even if we are the bad apples we still have rights, and accidents and mistakes happen, its not whether u get caught or not. Antigo has serious issues and to not see them for what they are is as stupid as the person not seeing the issues. and as for Alexis i know exactly what u are talking about and its not rumors or saying all the police are bad, just that some have issues. and we as members of the community cant flush them away and pretend that they dont exist because i dont want my kids to grown up thinking that the police arent going to help in all situations.

  19. Alexis says:

I don’t deserve police help??? Very nice. Apparently because a voice an opinion I am now unworthy??
First of all, I am not a police hater nor do I believe all police are bad. As I stated in the other section about the PD, most of the things I post were to inform Ignorant that there is proof that things are or have happened, and to pretend they don’t is not a reality.
Do we need the police? Yep! Are they all bad? Nope. Do I take issue with SOME of the things that go on? You bet.
And for you to imply that I am some kind of shady character with fears of getting caught is absurd! You don’t know me and have no idea what I have been through or experienced. You have no idea that the things posted are just bits and pieces of my life experiences. And as someone who cares about what goes on in this town, I have filed complaints, made phone calls and tips and filed police reports. So much for your theory that I’m some kind of deviant, who gets off bashing the police!!!
Finally, AGAIN, I will state that you obviously need to go back and read my posts, since you’ve misconstrued my comments about things that have happened in the community as some kind of police bashing. The issues posted were posted as evidence that there are questionable things going on. I am not saying all police are bad and all do wrong. For you to assume that’s what I mean is ignorant. I can believe in something but not always agree that it’s right or that it’s being done in the right ways.

  20. Average Citizen says:

I believe that police matters are public record. You say you are innocent so please tell us the case number or date that you were so violated and your house was “raided” by the swat team, drug dogs, etc etc that all happened from only an “anonymous tip”… If you have nothing to hide then lets grab the record on your incident so we can all see how very innocent you are and all the intrusion that was bestowed on you from an anonymous tip. For some reason I think that if that in fact did happened they did not go threw all that on just an anonymous tip. So lets all look into that together so we can really see all the facts and circumstances in this matter that you say you were so violated about! If the police dept reacted in such a matter from nothing then shame on them….

  21. Alexis says:

First of all, I am not sure that records of raids and stops where nothing was found and no charges were filed, are public access. If they are, maybe you can share where to find this information, so that we can all look it up.
Second, I never said it was my house that was raided. For you to imply that I am seeking sympathy or trying to increase me role as a victim, is asinine. And furthermore, I don’t need to be personally “violated” to think that something isn’t right, nor do I have to be personally “violated” to take issue with how things are handled. It was simply another incident that I thought should be brought to light regarding the questionable antics of our police department.
If you think that all the incidents I listed were from personal experience, than I could see why you would think I’m some kind of criminal, but I am not. In fact the only thing on my record is my divorce and a speeding ticket from 7 years ago.
Out of the incidents I discussed, only one was actually mine personally. The others were from the people in my life that I am closest to. (I would say they happened to my friends, but I am sure you would only use that as a reason to ostracise me further due to the company I keep or to imply that my associates are liars.)
In regards to the raid, I posted the “5 second version” due to space. I would be glad to post further info, but I doubt you will be satisfied even then.
They raided four homes and found a “pot pipe” in one. No charges were filed. Yet they were(according to the warrents) searching for the components used in a large scale growing operation. All four were told they were there following up on a tip they had recieved.
In retrospect, the “tip” was believed to be called in by one of the men’s soon-to-be-ex wife, causing him and his three closest friend to be raided. She tried to use this information against him later, during a custody hearing.
So, hey, if you can pull this up on public record, I’d love to see what the official documents say, too!
I’m just putting experiences out there so people can comment and some can know that they are not alone in theirs. If you would like, I can have them sign in and post their experiences personally, if that would somehow make them more real for you.

  22. getreal says:

i dont think anyone understands situations until u r in one. i personally was in a raid and i was innocent and the police even abused my rights as a citizen under a tip they received. i was highly ashamed and embarrassed that they abuse power without looking into the situations before hand and take time to evaluate it before endangering the lives of innocent people. the information given to the pd was unsubstantiated and again no charges were filed because they had nothing to charge me with. i was innocent. but yet they had a warrant that said to look for safes, drugs, weapons, etc. i had nothing and still have nothing so innocent people are abused too. and to think that the only one who has real insight on these situations are the ones who are involved with the community in some way. i think alot of u need to open your eyes and shut your mouths about gossip. it spreads worse than disease in a small town!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. K says:

First of all, woman are able to become police officers… Therefore in order to complete an internship, its very well possible that a “girl” may be seen riding in a police car.
Second of all, imagine going to work everyday & having to deal with people who hate you. Lets face it, many people don’t care about cops because they “gave me a ticket”, “ruined my life” or “arrested my friend for something they didn’t do”. But who’s the first person you call when you’re in trouble?
    Exactly.

  24. ignorantpeoplesuck says:

I said he was punished harshly, not too harshly. He got what he deservved. I was only using it as an example to show that the police are punished, when deemed appropriate, and they are usually punished harsher than ordinary citizens. I think people also need to understand that because they file a complaint, disciplinary action won’t always follow. Just as annonymous complaints may be bogus, I’m sure there are lots of bogus complaints filed against police officers. Not to mention that because you feel something is wrong doesn’t mean someone else will. Each complaint is probably followed up on and if any action is needed it is taken. Because someone files a complaint against an officer doesn’t mean they are going to get fired.

Rumors are started very easily in small towns. Someone tells a second person they saw a cop with a young girl in the car and the second person adds to the story and by the time it gets to the tenth person the young girl had her head in the cop’s lap. Why would anyone even bring up that they saw a cop with a young girl in the car if they didn’t intend on starting some kind of rumor or making the cop look bad?? That is the ignorant part.

The cops have cameras and recorders-if they don’t use them they are idiots! They can help resolve some of the BS complaints against them and also make sure they are doing there job right. I’m sure there are way more bogus complaints filed against them than legitimate ones.

Warrants can not be solely issued based on an annonymous tip.

  25. Random says:

Thank you ignorantpeoplesuck, for making it blatantly clear that the police in Antigo do a fine job, and that it isn’t there fault someone’s family member or friend was breaking the law somehow. I find it humerous how people can sit here and complain about how bad the police in Antigo is, but when they need something, they call upon the police to assist. I resent a lot of things being said in this forum about young police officers. There are excellent officers here in the City of Antigo, and to put a label on the department because of an old occurence or a rumor you heard probably started by some jealous teenager is absolutely obsurd. I just hope that whoever complains, has an eye-opening experience that changes their perspective on local law enforcement. Thanks for your time

  26. Average Citizen says:

I’m Sorry Alexis you are correct, I assumed (which was wrong of me) these things happened to you since you are judging them and talking about them and it all wasn’t just second and maybe third hand information that you heard. It appears you are somewhat of an intelligent person and should be intelligent enough to figure out that there are TWO sides to every story. I would assume that if you are talking about these things that you have heard you went and spoke to the 2nd half of these situations. Oh wait, that you did not do did you? You just feel the need to spread the word of one side of the story which in fact you were not involved in! You can go to the police dept and fill out a form for open records or you can speak to the officer’s and even if they can’t tell you everything they probably can explain a lot to you about what really happened and how things really work. At least this way you can say you attempted to get both sides of the story instead of just judging from what you heard from one side. I asked a city officer I know about these 4 raids that were done for a large growing operation. In fact in the last at least 5 years the City of Antigo Police Dept has not executed 4 ‘raids’ (to the innocent they are search warrants) for large grows. Apparently some do not understand that there are two totally seperate law enforcement agencies in this area; The City of Antigo Police Dept and the Langlade County Sheriff’s Dept. Yet again blaming the City PD for something they may not have even done is because yet again people only look at one side! For example apparently some do not realize this but the Jail is in fact ran completely by the Langlade County Sheriff’s Dept and the City PD has absolutely nothing to do with it. I am not saying the Sheriff’s Dept is doing anything wrong because I do support and respect those officers as well (altho I am disappointed in the new sheriff myself). I just think if you are going to point fingers, spread things you “heard”, and judge you should attempt to get both sides of the facts or at least know who exactly you are accusing of doing what!

I do not think the officer’s are perfect because in fact they are human and everyone makes mistakes. I do know that they are out there working very hard for our communittee and sometimes deserve a good job instead of being constantly bashed from people who don’t have he facts. We can bash all aspects of this communittee if we wanted to The Local Business’s, Fire Dept., Post Office, etc etc. No one and nothing is perfect and for some to think they are is wrong. I do not think things are perfect but I’m intelligent enough to appreciate what we have and not judge just because of things I’ve heard. Maybe you should open your eye’s and wake up and go to the Police Dept and get some real info before you continue to spread rumors!

  27. tinker says:

regardless of how a warrant is executed or by whom most people are guilty by association. and usually the sheriffs dept and the city depts work together. nobody is bashing anyone if your read the blogs the way u should and stop reading extra into them, as far as i’m concerned the whole city of antigo needs to do some re evaluating about everything. the only things that get done are the things that money can buy, well not all of us have money to buy our friends, most of ours are genuine, we’re the one in the corner not getting the things this town needs. start to look around this is becoming a ghost town, and its unfortunate too. areas that were smaller than antigo years ago are now becoming our primary shopping and working areas leaving us with nothing. and alot of it has to do with the way our city officials think, all of them, not just some. and that would include usless spending when it can be put to much better use, and to the growing kids of our society, mine included.

  28. Alexis says:

    Nicely said tinker.

  29. Alexis says:

I have to say that in fact most should go back and re-read many of the blogs here.
I am tired of defending myself for trying to show that people posting here have merit in what they are saying.
I also apologize for assuming I could post a 5 second version of an incident to make my point, without having someone assume that by giving a short version , I am hiding facts. I have looked into “both sides’ of many issues and I do spend a great time discussing issues with the people I know and the people I meet. Unless you share experiences, thoughts and opinions with others, you may not ever be aware of some of the things going on around you, right or wrong. A newspaper isn’t the only way to stay informed.
And, until recently, I was unaware that you can go to the local police/sheriff’s department and get any information on any incident, just by asking. Interestingly enough, the issue was addressed in the editorial section of the Antigo Daily Journal(a reprint from another WI paper). Prior to that I had relied on documents provided by the party involved or their word when no such documents existed(a traffic stop where no charges were filed). Pardon me for taking others at their word.
I am not holding previous acts against the current offiers, just showing that things like this can and do happen, contrary to what ignorant says. I am not bashing, discounting or discrediting anyone, just making it known that, again, these things can and do happen. I don’t blame anyone for that, I just think that the situation as a whole can be improved. But for that to happen, the people who posted here, our friends, family and associates need to take the time to share these incidents with those who are in a position to do something about it.

  30. ignorant people suck! says:

I would certainly never say things don’t happen. However, I am sick of people spreading baseless rumors in this community. A rumor can be indirect “I saw a cop with a young girl in a squad car the other day” as it obviously implies the cop was doing something wrong; or direct “I saw a cop marking headlights in the parking lot so they can stop drunk drivers.”

Either way, they are harmful and have no basis being repeated without having the complete and truthful story.

  31. antigonewbie says:

Best advice. Stay away from cops and any other type of person that could have power over you. I know it is getting harder in this day and age with everyone willing to give up their civil rights.

And yes, cops do mark headlights, tires or what not. They also study out of date laws to pull people over for the lamest reasons to do a drug searches.

  32. Average Citizen says:

Some I guess just need to grow up… I guess if they want to pull me over to do a drug search they are free to because I have nothing to hide in any way. I’m glad they are doing it actually because I don’t want drugs in my communittee or around my children. Good for the police for not allowing low life drug dealers and druggies in our communiittee and I am willing to support what they want to do to get them out of here. If you are that desperate that you have to break the law and sell drugs to my friends, family, and children you don’t deserve to be in our communittee and if you do go to jail I hope the experience is horrible because hopefully you wont do it again. If your an addict get some help and stop dragging everyone else down! So again I support the police in drug searches or search warrants or what ever they need to do to get that stuff out of here… And I can say this because I have nothing to hide and support their efforts to make this a safe, drug free communittee.

  33. tinker says:

not only the drug dealers need to be punished but so do the bar owners and bartenders who r not doing their jobs to control underage drinking and driving.

  34. ignorant people suck! says:

There is a law that says bartenders can not serve an intoxicated person, how many times do you think that has been enforced! Our community is simply wat too tolerant of drunks and kids drinking.

  35. jistme says:

Antigo Newbie. Can you prove that the cops mark headlights? I would love to see that. Where did you get that obsurd information from? I hope you saw it for yourself and not believing what someone else said.

  36. jistme says:

Also if they study out of date laws and enforce them, they wouldn’t be able to enforce them if they were “out of date”? Can you back that one up too please?

  37. antigonewbie says:

Yes, I have personally witnessed law enforcement officers mark tires of cars parked in front of bars(Not in this town).

I mis-spoke about out of date laws. I should have said obscure laws such as how license plate brackets should be placed on a car etc. Obscure laws that joe citizen is completely unaware of, expecially when traveling in another state.

I have seen law enforcement shows where uniformed officers stated specifically that they study obscure laws to justify probable cause.

I was also pulled over for doing 66 in a 65. Most will agree law enforcement doesn’t waste their times with such miniscule infractions, but because I was traveling a major drug running route and fit the profile(whatever tha means), he pulled me over.

He also asked to search my car and I let him without incident. Nothing to hide.

The law enforcement officer was very forthcoming to me about why he had pulled me over. He didn’t even write me a warning ticket.

He had probable cause to pull me over for doing 66 in a 65, but his interest wasn’t to enforce the speeding laws. His actions were part of a plan to disrupt drug running.

  38. ignorant people suck! says:

I am sure the officer was marking tires to enforce parking violations, not to pick up drunk drivers as the mark probably wouldn’t be seen once the tire is spinning and it would wear off quickly. I believe they use chalk to do this. I’ve never seen it happen at night in Antigo, around the bars.

  39. tinker says:

have u actually sat in the parking lots of the area bars and were u looking for this type of action? antigos finest are some pretty slick little suckers if u ask me. and yes they cause trouble before it even begins, always have and always will. gives them something to do and to be proud of and get a raise. for as much money they get for tickets in this town where does all that money go? theres at least 3 to 5 drunk drivers a weekend and thats not including any other citations.

  40. ddddd says:

I’m fairly new to Antigo, but where I lived before it was common knowledge that tires were marked. In fact, they would chalk them each hour a car sat outside a bar. If the tire had 4 marks, that meant the owner had been in the bar at least 4 hours. The more marks you had, the more chance you had of getting pulled over. My brother in law was a cop and readily admitted it! Also I’m not sure it was chalk, because it didn’t wipe off very easily and would only disappear after driving around a few hours. It seemed more like some kind of wax. I think it definitely helped in preventing drunk driving. I have no idea if it was legal, but it was definitely going on.

  41. ignorant people suck! says:

the city gets very little of the tickets, I think $10 for a speeding ticket. The rest goes to the State. And yes, I’ve stood outside Nick’s during the summer and never seen it happen. The cops drive through a lot, but I’ve never seen one get out to mark a tire.

  42. Shalimar says:

Well, people, I have 1st hand knowledge of how our jail is run & how prisoners of any caliber are treated. My only son was incarcerated for 5 months a few years back. He deserved the time, but they don’t have to make it hell. He ended up with a bad eye infection because they didn’t give him the contact lens solution I brought down to the jail for him. A man in his cell was epileptic & kept telling them(Jailers) he needed to take his medication several times a day. Well…they didn’t give it to him at all for days!!! Then one night, the man had a bad seizure, the others in the room buzzed for help but none came even after they spoke through the intercom. He fell out of his bunk onto the concrete floor & cracked his head hard. Meanwhile, the other inmates who are not qualified are trying their best to help this poor man. The next day, the nurse started giving him his meds BUT she made him take the ENTIRE days quantity at once, so she didn’t have to keep coming back 3 times each day. Hows that for quality health care in our jail?? I wrote a detailed letter to the editor of the Antigo Daily Journal, but of course Freddie, being a friend of our men in blue, didn’t print it. & has printed nothing with my family’s name on it since regardless of the issue.Thats what you get when you have a family owned newspaper………bias or indifference.

  43. DF2Y says:

It seems that meds have been a common problem. But the solution is very simple- don’t break the law and you won’t have to go to jail!

  44. Shalimar says:

That is true. But, withholding an aspirin for a minor headache cannot be compared to withholding life saving epilepsy medication when they KNEW the man had epilepsy. There was also no reason to withhold a brand new unopened bottle of contact solution from my son when he repeatedly asked for it as his eyes got more & more red & infected. Yes, my son broke the law, yes, he should & did pay for his lack of good judgement, but meaness & indifference is rampant at our jail. I do not expect them to sit & chat with him or tuck him in, but common decency toward another human being who was in for a victimless crime is human nature. Believe me, our jail staff is totally apathetic. If the epileptic man would have died in that jail because of their apathy & lack of medical care, I would have contacted his family & the county would be facing a huge lawsuit.

  45. Sherry says:

There are alot of things that Freddie keeps out of the Antigo Daily Journal, including his own drunken driving offenses.

  46. Shalimar says:

lol True that, Sherry! & anyone of means that can buy their way out of print.

  47. ignorant people suck! says:

I am definitely not a Freddie fan or ADJ fan-I don’t even subscribe. However, good ole Freddie did put his own name in the paper and made a short reference to his arrest.

  48. Shalimar says:

    Go Freddie!!!

  49. trt says:

I beleive everyone at sometime has done something that they could of sat in jail for. Just some get caught I beleive the point is that 1. If you need to sit then ALL your regular to make it through the day meds should be handed to you 2. There are bad cops everywhere they are just PEOPLE! 3. If you have a problem or complaint you might as well not bother it won’t be heard. 4. If you only knew who to blow then you won’t get published. Just my 4 cents

  50. BrutallyHonest says:

I know this is a late post, and Im not entirely sure anyone will even see or read this. But unfortunately I also have been witness to some “not so righteous” practices by the Antigo PD. And trust me, this irks me just as much to have to say this as it does to have been witness to it, being im a cop myself (in another jurisdiction).
Last spring while visiting Antigo, I was taking a late evening walk, alone, wearing a hooded sweatshirt(hood down), tennis shoes and sweat pants. I was stopped by an antigo officer, (no im not going to mention his name) and questioned about my destination etc (which is a bit strange but not entirely out of line). Where my problem began was when he asked if he could search me for weapons. I asked him why he felt the need and his exact words were “dont get smart..i have my reasons”. Now searches of this sort are called Terry Stops, but they are only legal if probable cause, or reason exists I may have, am or will commit a crime. But to appease the officer, I allowed it. He then went through my wallet, emptied everything out, peeked in the pockets and handed it back. Leaving the contents on the ground. He told me to have a good evening and left. Now to all of you who have been throwing out the “c” word, yes…complaint! I have a sad but true bit of information for you. Complaints do well and fulfill their purpose in larger jurisdictions. But in small town america, not so much. Its human nature to react, or want to react to someone who has brought hardship on you. And so will that person’s circle of friends and associates. And small town america is much more accomodating to such feelings than larger cities. I know this because Ive seen it, with my own two eyes. Hence why I never filed a complaint.
