What’s going into the Old Kmart building?
I have heard some rumors lately that there is a new business going into the old Kmart building north of town. First, I heard it was going to be Shopko, and then Goodwill?
Anyone know for sure what the deal is?
I, for one, sure hope it’s Shopko! I think Walmart needs the competition.

df2y, im not sure i just heard that they will be an anchor store. and that is if all the meetings went well
Thanks tinker.
Today I heard that the Subway on superior will close and someone is putting in a pizza shop. The subway in walmart will stay, and a new one is being put in the strip mall that fantastic sam’s is in. sears is moving to the kmart plaza, and supposedly Dunham’s is coming as well. im excited for a dunham’s, but i dont know if antigo will be able to support it? hopefully all of this turns out and works for the town!
MINI STORE JUST MOVING
Sorry for buzzing in here late. Fazoli’s would be nice. The food there is good and not that expensive. But.. Most of those franchise companies require a population base of over 120,000. Be lucky Wausau has one. The guy who started Applebee’s had to fight hard to start up one in Wausau. The guy who started Tony Romas in Wausau had to battle for three years to finally get his franchise started. The people who own these franchise companies look at the population base and make the decision.
Wausau has been a shopping hub for a lot of people from Ironwood Mi to Park Falls, to Medford, to Coloma. The franchise companies fail to recognize that. The people who do the studies are thousands of miles away and fail to recognize local geography and shopping habits. It might be different now that Rhinelander, Ironwood, and Minocqua have more businesses. And the price of gas is more expensive for people to drive 240 miles round trip to shop.
But the thing is Antigo isn’t much of a hub for anything. People from Elcho, White Lake, Birnamwood, and Aniwa might go there to grocery shop, but that population base is very small compared to Wausau.
I CAN see something like a new KFC, Long John Silver’s, Ponderosa, and Cousin’s. But look how many restaurants have came and went in the old County market Building. Was it because the population couldn’t support it, was the food crappy, bad location or a combination of all of the above?
I thought KFC and Taco Bell were supposed to rebuild on the current KFC lot. Looks like that isn’t going to happen anytime in the near future.
Ignorant-
Just like how we were supposed to get an Ace Hardware next to Culver’s 2 or 3 years ago, the KFC/Taco Bell idea failed too for the same reason. The people planning to put them in just couldn’t afford it. Whoever planned on putting it in Antigo obviously failed to realize how big of a business Taco Bell did here.
we need more job’s for people that cant get a job because of his or her backround. we need a plase to shop like a khols or a shopko or a nother
food store .
I HEARD THAT SEARS IS GOING INTO PART OF THE OLD KMART BUILDING AND A STORE LIKE KOHLS, CALLED PEEBLES WILL BE MOVING IN ANOTHER PART. PEEBLES (FOR WHAT I HEARD) IS ALOT LIKE KOHLS.
SO THERE WILL BE MORE JOBS AVAILABLE THERE. AND DON’T FORGET GOODWELL
Goodwill blows. What a crock they are, and expensive. I make a lot of donations to CAR and I absolutely refuse to give any thing to good will. They waste so many good things there, and they throw a lot of good sellable items away. For instance: Antiques, if they are a little damaged, or chipped wood, they toss it in the dumpster, or an antique glass vase, with a mere chip on the bottom or some thing, in the dumpster. What a waste. Arent we trying to make this world a better place by reducing waste and using our resources better? I just don’t understand how a place like good will got to be like this. What we need is a st. vincent de paul. They sell every thing damaged or not. i understand goodwill needs to make money, so why not offer a variety of things used and not used. Their prices are also higher now than ever, and they are selling a lot of useless junk. What a waste. Also the management at that store I have heard is for crapp. Maybe they should have started out right. Apparently, most of their first staff that they hired are already not working there any more. At this reate, the building will be setting empty again in no time.

Wow, they should have asked you before coming to Antigo because according to your knowledge, they are doomed. I have no idea why these large organizations don’t call the local experts like BIGNEWSJUNKY before considering such a waste of THEIR time and money. I am no big fan of Goodwill but I do know that many students that sit in my classroom are going to benefit from having lower cost products available to them. Many of them come from single family homes that cannot afford new clothes. Think of the many low income families that will benefit from this place coming to town. Please, stop with the business of tearing down everything that is happening in our city. How many complained that those building sat vacant. Now, they are opening and we get complaints like this. I guess you just cant win.
Well I for one am happy they are here. I called CAR one day to see if they were taking donations and I got a extremely rude response of “we don’t take any garage sale garbage”. Needless to say, I didn’t bring my donations to CAR. I am happy to see them here.
exactly VOR, you really can’t win with anything you do or say. Someone will always tear you down.
Goodwill’s grand opening was awesome this morning, they had a really good turn out. Even if you’re not a fan of the franchise, now Antigo has TWO discount clothing outlets…just what we need here for our low wages.
Sherry, I heard Goodwill was packed all day long. Great to see!
If they were going to build a restaurant why have we not seen any thing yet? As it is already Aug. 17……..
I heard Aldies is thinking about putting a store some where here in Antigo. Not sure when or where however I think they should do it and do it very soon. I’m sure we all would agree to that and as for me I hope it gives Walmart a run for there money. When we were in Wausau the other day a lady that works at Aldies told us they are going to put an Aldies some where in or close to Antigo. As for me I think that would be a very good thing for all of us.
Aldi’s would give Walmart and Copps competition, but it would probably kill stores like Butch’s and Lakeside.
IS ALDIES GOING IN THE OLD COUNTY MARKET?
From the Journal
In another revitalization action, the council agreed to purchase property at 619 Irving St., the current Farmer’s Elevator, in a move that will allow the business to relocate into the former County Market building downtown.
No Aldi going there.
QUEEN-I haven’t heard anything official on aldi’s, just the regular rumors. If they come to town, it won’t be in the county markety building, because supposedly Farmer’s Elavator is moving there and opening a country store of some sort.
According to the Antigo Journal, Peebles & Sears will be moving into the old Kmart building shortly. You can read the full article here: http://antigodailyjournal.com/full.php?id=6604
Some people were going around downtown this morning with a petition for Aldi’s, which I gladly signed. With all of the unemployed and people on welfare in this town, we need a discount food store bad.
I couldn’t agree with you more, DF2Y…that would be fantastic!
I STOPPED AT THE NEW SEARS STORE AND IT IS ALOT BIGGER THEN THE OLD STORE THEY HAD, AND IT’S BEAUTIFUL IN THERE. THE STAFF ARE THE NICEST PEOPLE. I HATE GOING TO WAUSAU (FULL LINE STORE) IF I NEED APPLIANCES I WOULD RATHER STAY HERE IN ANTIGO THEY ARE MORE HELPFUL.
I have heard that a group of investors are looking into putting an unbelievable Full Service Cash Wash in. Supposedly it is going to be called “Foxyz” and will be ran by a female, one of the investors. Word is that it will be more than just a car wash and be more female/customer oriented than the one across from the Fair grounds. In my opinion it wouldn’t take much to beat the service given there!
Sorry but there is a Sears there now! But I do agree with you as far as the other car wash – why pay to have gritty dirty water thrown on your vehicle! The equipment in that place is just as discusting as the owner. That is one business that hasn’t a clue on “customer appreciation”
The worst customer service I have ever had in Antigo is at the Antigo Sportswear shop on 5th Avenue. The fat bald guy is just the rudest person I have ever had to deal with. I will never spend another dime in that place because of him.
I agree, he’s not very polite to customers. Makes you feel that you are disturbing his peace when you buy something, what in the heck is he in business for then???
He may not be polite but I agree with the comment about the one across from the fair grounds. That guy is not just rude. He physically assaulted his manager so bad that he has had 4 surgeries & still has no use of his hand. But he is being taken to court – trial starts in Oct.2010. He doesn’t just hit males though, he physically assaulted his girlfriend of 10yrs. She was smart enough to put cameras in the house & everyone will be able to see with their own eyes what he did to this poor woman, who weighs a whole 100lbs. She is also filing charges against him. Think about this the next time you need your car washed. Think about this b4 letting your son or daughter work for this animal!
Iknow this Shammy dude – nothing but a cocky little nothing. Ya he left a lotta bruises on that good looking little blonde but she was dumb enuf to stick around, how he got her no one will ever know. It sounds like his luck is about to run out soon. He is gonna be surprised when he goes to court when he sees himself smokin on his pipe, drinkin his whiskey and physically assaulting his old girlfriend. TV crews are covering this I hear and the Shelter homes for Battered Women in Antigo and Shawano and Wausau are going to be there too. Wouldn’t want to be him. The IRS is opening his up too. Poor guy, NOT!
QueenBee11….shame on you for referring to a victim of abuse as “dumb enuf to stick around”!! You should be ashamed of yourself for thinking, not to mention typing, such an ignorant and cold comment. You have no idea what was happening to this woman or what kept her in the situation. An abusive person has sooo many ways of controlling a victim. She was obviously making the decsion that she felt was best for her at the time.
I agree. What a $h*tty thing to say (excuse the language). If you have never been in that situation, you have no idea what it is like. It is real easy to sit on the sidelines and criticize what you don’t understand and look down your nose at the expense of victims, which is exactly what she obviously was. Personally I feel that the punishment should fit the crime. May he be beaten and raped daily in prison by pros for ever raising a hand to a female! And you should be punched in your mouth for making such a stupid comment, “QueenBee”. Lets hope you never get victimized in any way, but then again maybe then it would teach you sympathy or empathy for your fellow [wo]man.
