New Charges for Man Who Drove into Good Nite Inn
According to news reports, the man who is accused of driving his SUV into the Good Nite Inn this summer is facing new charges in court.
He is already facing charges of “Homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle” for the death of Jesus Manuel Quirios Castillo, who was asleep in his motel room and killed by the SUV that came through the building. According to the DA, the driver of the SUV had a BAC of more than .40. If convicted, this will be the drivers 3rd offense of drunk driving.
The man charged, Stephen Van Vleit, is now facing Bail Jumping charges. He had been out of jail on a $25,000 bond. He was in a treatment facility for alcohol. The bail jumping charges are being filed due the fact that Van Vleit did not show up for his daily breath test on Thursday and did not return to the treatment facility until Saturday.
He had a court appearance in Antigo on Oct. 23. Van Vleit is now in jail on a $75,000 cash bond. He has waived his Preliminary Hearing.
According to News Channel 7′s Report, Van Vleit’s lawyer is hoping to come to a plea agreement with the prosecution by the end of November. You can find Channel 7′s report here.

Mr. VanVleit was back in court today and posted an additional $75,000 bond. In combination with his first bond, this is a total of $100,000. It is still unknown if the first $25,000 he paid will be forfeited. He has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. He is due back in court in February 2008.

Once again Mr. VanVleit has violated rules of his bond and is now back behind bars. According to the Antigo Daily Journal, VanVleit tested positive for alcohol – against strict orders and the court has now set his bond at an ADDITIONAL $125,000. The violation occurred last Friday and as of today, the new bond amount has not been posted. It is still unknown as to whether his previous bonds will be forfeited.

According to the Antigo Journal today, Mr. VanVleit has AGAIN violated the rules of his bond. Judge Kawalski has now set bond at 1 million dollars – the highest bond ever set in Langlade County.

Mr. VanVleit had his sentencing hearing today in Langlade Cty. court. Judge Kawalski has sentenced him to 12 years in prison and 11 years of extended supervision. Where in my last post does it say anything about the migrant worker who was killed? Before you jump on me, naturalized or not, he was still a migrant worker. If my first post about the man who was killed, I appologize if I was wrong about the immigration status of that migrant worker. My gripe about the mothers of babies with illegal fathers has nothing to do with race. Once the illlegal father gets deported(has happened in this area more than once) taxpayers foot the grocery and housing bills for mother and child. If you belive this doesn’t happen then you, friend, need to open your eyes. I also happen to be well traveled and well employeed. As a taxpayer, I do not tsupport any welfare system. Having to pay for people who are too lazy and/or ignorant to support themselves is just plain wrong. At one time in America, if you needed help, you went to your family for support. I still haven’t seen anything confirming the young man was a real citizen. The report at the top of the page only talks about the brother going back to Mexico. I still think that illegal aliens should be shot on sight. Our armed forces should be put on our borders to keep criminals out. Wow, I think we have got way off track here. I was outraged to read the above post and find out that Van Vleit was once again on the street!!
He drunkingly drove a vehicle over a sleeping person. It doesn’t matter who that person was, only that a crime was commited and the man who did it continues to thumb his nose at us.
He has continually violated his bond and instead of revoking it and placing him in jail, we just issue another bond!? What is going on?? My first thought was that it’s a way to get more money for our community but then why would we not forfeit his first, second, and third bond?
And is there really a question of his bond. I am under the understanding that you post a bond, so that you do not have to stay in jail, while awaiting your due process of law, but I believe the condition is that you have to abide by certain rules and regulations and if you do not then you have to give up the money you posted and go to jail!
What is the point,if I can stay out of jail and don’t lose the money? What is the motivation to keep out of trouble??

If you violate the conditions of your bond, the court can keep the bond. Just another reason that Uttke has to go, he continually gives bail jumpers their bond back.

For the record because I know first hand, neither Jesus Manuel nor his brother were illegal. They both had the rights of any other immigrant whether they were from Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, England or Poland. It is all the same in the law. They had as much right as old faker Juan to be here. Their family came to this country like so many others of many nations, legally, and they we not a discredit to the system that allows this sort of immigration. Jesus was a legally married man from Minnesota. He had a home, a wife and 2 kids. He had been living and working in Minnesota for 6 years taking care of his family and also taking on extra work to send help to his poorer relitives in Mexico. That is the way the more honorable citizens that come here legally from other countries handle it. They come legal, work hard and send help to the relitives who choose to stay behind in the country of origin by mailing bucks to put food on the table and improve the standard of living. There are alot of people living this way from many nations because even though our government has been real encouraging to industry that wants to farm out American jobs elsewhere, surprisingly, there are people who are just as proud of their homes and countries as we are of ours…and just because Jesus chose to make America his home does not mean his mother and father wanted to do the same.
The sad thing was, this job was an extra job that apparently, the two brothers took to make the extra money they needed to go home and visit their mother who they had not seen in 6 years. THAT IS 6 YEARS THAT MOTHER HAD NOT SEEN HER SONS…because they were American immigrants and she is a Mexican nationalist that did not choose to immigrate.
The brothers were here to earn the money to leave that next Saturday to go and visit their mother and the rest of their family after being away for 6 years.
That is why the other brother went to Mexico. It was what they both were going to do anyway had Jesus not been killed, but suffering the shock and trauma of being there when his brother was killed, and needing to be available to console the mother and family on the loss of Jesus made it more pressing.

As for Jesus Manuel, he was a hard working young man with a dream and a family. Who is going to care for his children now? His mother will never see her son again…his brother will always have the horrible image of his brother’s death. Jesus Manuel did nothing wrong. He had just arrived that day, gone to be early to be up at 5 to go to work to make the money to go to visit his mother in a couple of days. His mother was robbed of that and he was robbed of the chance to show his family what kind of man he was
and share his stories of his life in the great country he had chosen to become a citizen of.

Twenty-six year old Jesus Manuel Quirios-Castillo, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Minnesota, was killed in the process.
So he wasn’t an immigrant legal or illegal…He was a naturalized CITIZEN of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA…which means Juan you dummy…He was a AMERICAN AS YOU…and probably could recite the presidents and the American Constitution.
setting it straight – I KNEW IT! I knew he was a legal citizen! Not that it matters, because it’s a horrible tragedy regardless of that. It just really burns me up that so many people see a person of any kind of hispanic descent and immediately classify them as illegal and treat them so rudely. THANK YOU for providing the actual newspaper clip and proving the point. I still think of this young man so often, and always wonder how his family is doing. I’ve asked around, if maybe there was some kind of memorial fund set up for them but no one seems to know anything. Do you?
Jesus’s family is suffering greatly. His brother continues to weep for his brother. It effected so many people. Not only his brother, but Jesus’s co-workers who were with him that morning. They tried so hard to revive him. Yet when one of them approached VanVleit to make sure he was ok, VanVleit only laughed in their face. Just to make sure everyone knows, both men were naturalized citizens of the US.
I am so sorry. I cannot begin to imagine how horrible this has been for the people close to him. My heart truly aches for his brother who had to witness such a nightmare. I think a lot about his family and friends as well. Especially his Mom, who must have been very proud of her sons. Does anyone have an address for his family? I’ve asked over and over and no one seems to know anything. It would be nice to at least let the family know that he is not forgotten and to do something for the kids that no longer have their father. As for Mr. VanVleit, well, I gathered that he was a good for nothing idiot, but after reading that he laughed, I now know he is also pure evil!
Jesus was born in this country…26 years ago….much like many celebrities, hispanic politicians and other decent American citizens. One of my favorite singers is a hispanic…Jennifer Lopez. So to hear anyone discredit a hard working decent man because of his ancestry breaks my heart.
The fellow went to be early so he would be fresh for work in the morning. Both brothers did. They were not the wrong doers.
I wish I did have the address. I am sure it would be healing for the family to know that others care and appreciate their invaluable loss. If I can find out anything I will post here. It may be a while so check back later.
Typical Langlade county court case…almost a year and a half later, and still no trial. Same thing with the doctor growing marijuana…a year later, and its like everyone forgot about him.
ya well u can thank the courts for that just let everyone plead not guilty all the time and there u go , not to mention uttke, more might have gotten done with him gone, now we’ll never know. i think change would have handled alot of cases faster and tell them u had your chance now do your time.
livehere you are so clueless! “No contest” is basically rhe same as pleaing guilty. This is a victory for the community and for the victim’s family. “No contest” means that the county won’t foot a huge tab for a trial. “No contest” means that the victim’s loved ones won’t have to endure a painful trial and they won’t also have to fear that the jury will find the man who did this not guilty on some technicality. Mr. Uttke did a phenominal job bringing an end that was just to this tragic case. This criminal will serve hard time – likely the majority of the rest of his life. The victim’s family and friends will not have to continue to be raw in their pain. Shame on you for spouting off with out knowing what you are talking about.
Was it only me who noticed how much “healthier” this man looks since being incarcerated for so long? He must really have a drinking problem to have bounced back so well after being sober since his incarceration.

two things….there is no smoking and no drinking in jail…and everyone gets three squares and lots of sleep Those things makes a huge difference. But those things don’t change what is in a man’s heart and soul.
As for the plea, Uttke published that he will ask the judge for 15 years and 10 years of reporting IF IT IS AGREEMENT WITH THE VICTIMS FAMILY. That usually means that for 15 years, and 5 off for time served and 5 for good behavior, that 5 would be the usual max actually served, but from what I hear from someone who was in jail, the family has not petitioned the judge or the DA and unless they do, the judge may lower the sentence still.
That means that the guy could get next to nothing in penalty.
WHY HASN’T THE VICTIMS FAMILY STOOD UP FOR THEIR FAMILY MEMBER!! A GREAT DEAL OF HOW THIS GOES DEPENDS ON THEM.

I’ve seen where really hard core criminals have gotten off almost scott free because their mommas cried to the judge…and no one countered.
So what does that say about our justice system…If a man is without a family to speak up for him that it is okay to take his life away?
And if jail is the only thing keeping this guy from the bars…will there be another before justice finds a home??

I know if that was my son, I would be camped on the judges doorstep until he gave my son justice.
Don’t think I am bashing the family. There have been enough idiots try to do that…adding unfounded insult to fatal injury…and those people should be totally ashamed of themselves….
But if there is to be justice, the family of the victim has to ask for it.

15 years is not enough. Maybe he’ll die within 15 years and save us some money in the process. I’d say if you take someone else’s life, so should yours be taken. An eye for an eye…
I definitely agree if taking someone’s life was done as nothing more than a selfish act of murder involving alcohol or drugs. But as someone who has recently lost a loved family member in a car “accident,” an eye-for-an-eye doesn’t apply to something like that. I strongly agree that every individual needs a voice after they’re gone from this earth, especially under these circumstances at the Good Nite Inn. I hope that someday Jesus Manuel Quirios Castillo will be able to rest in peace.
A few questions because I really do not know the answers. Has the family been contacted? Have they been contacted in Spanish? Do they even realize what is going on in court? I know they are not from our area, so is it a financial issue that prevents them from traveling here? I mean, the husband/father Jesus has been murdered, so I’m sure they have been through a lot financially as well as everything else. Something seems amiss here! As for Van Vleit, I’m with Sherry in that this is not a case for capital punishment, but I’m also with IPS in that dying in jail seems fitting enough. I’m not thrilled about tax dollars being spent to sustain this idiot either. Not his first offense after all. He will never change! Sherry, so sorry for your loss, but your dear loved one has no comparison to this Van Vleit fool. I’m sure your family member was a good and decent person who had an accident. Van Vleit is unfortunately a serial drunk driver, a habitual criminal, a dangerous stalker and if you read the post above by KSK, you will see that he even LAUGHED at the scene of the devastation he caused at the Good Nite Inn. I do hope Mr. Van Vleit finds the help he needs in prison, but enough is enough and 15 years is not NEARLY enough time for him to serve.
twelve years? thats it? how about life, with no parole? no matter what he will be a leech on society, look how long its taken to get this verdict.
12 years, 11 more on supervised probation and restitution to the family, yes? Restitution is a joke we all know because there is no amount of money going to bring that poor man back. I don’t know how many of you remember a few years back when that drunk Bolen guy ran over that lady walking down a country road and he got about the same (less years I think in prison) and he even jumped bail. Then there is the case still pending of that guy who was driving on HH and ran into the log truck killing his friend in the car and he was spared. I was told drugs were in the driver. What is happening in that case? Does anyone know? I feel so bad for the Jason Olsen family.
I have to agree that our justice system is lacking. An eye for an eye sure sounds prudent in cases such as these. We all know accidents to indeed happen but in cases like these in which the driver was impaired and knowingly used a vehicle to take another life is murder in my book, plain and simple. Just my opinion folks.
In the case of Jason Olsen, there were no drugs involved in that accident, that’s how rumors get started and can spread within a small town. Everyone was so sure that Rob Hogue was going to go to jail because of his reputation…he had to be impaired…fortunately that wasn’t the case and it truly was an “accident.”
