“Thank God for dead soldiers” and “God hates fags.” Picket Signs at Funerals

A Baltimore Man won a huge multi-million dollar lawsuit against Church members who picketed at his son’s funeral. The man’s son was killed in the Iraqi war.

He is urging others to do the same, and sue the Church members for their acts. Even after the lawsuit, the church group continues to picket.

Truly one of the most disgraceful acts imaginable! What could evil could possibly be possessing these people? They may call themselves a “church” but are certainly not serving a Christian God…or any God for that matter! I’m glad to see justice was served against them, even though it’s sadly only monetary. God Bless this young hero’s father for going after these monsters! I am so sorry this happened to him and his family, especially during such a horrible time in their lives. The sacred rites of a funeral should never be mocked, especially those of our brave and irreplaceable American soldiers.

I totally agree. This church, the Westboro Baptist Church, located in Kansas, threatened to picket years ago at the funeral of John Mattek, a soldier killed in the war in Iraq. Their logic is that “these soldiers are being killed as retribution for gays being allowed in the military” (paraphrase, not quote)
I am a student at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and there was a house fire in the last few months that killed three students. A few members of this church had a protest on campus, stating that this was punishment for our schools teaching liberal values that ‘allow’ homosexuality.

I’ve seen many people on this site called morons and such for sharing their opinions because others don’t agree with them; however I feel that these church members can truly be considered MORONS.

My brother is going to Iraq in fall and if this happened to me I would personally go and kick some retaded *ss I would shove them sighns right up there *sses Ill sit in jail to defend my brothers honor

  4. Sherry says:

Thank God for the Patriot Guard Riders who visit these funerals and keep the peace, that is one of the very reasons they organized such a group in the first place.

  5. ddddd says:

Har Har, I’m sure your brave brother will return safely and as a hero . I know your family is so proud of him. I come from a military family also and it’s so hard. We’ll be praying for your brother and your family. However, if anything were to happen and these people showed up, me and most of the town would be there to support you in your shoving of the signs! Yes, Sherry! Thank God for the Patriot Guard Riders!!! As they say … Who besides Jesus is willing to give his life for others so selflessly? THE AMERICAN SOLDIER! This homophobic crazy church needs to be legally charged! Isn’t what they practice some some kind of hate crime?

I am extremely happy that the only people these self-proclaimed “christians” (noone else refers to them as such) are fooling, is themselves. There have been leaders of cults in the past that have taken a lot of folks down with them, but these people cannot even add that to their credit! I certainly understand “freedom of religion,” and all that, but seriously, that church (I use that term loosely when referring to them) needs to be shut down. They’re probably not even smart enough, or appreciative enough to realize that it is because of our brave young soldiers risking their lives, and in some cases, giving their lives, that give them the right to freely practice their religion to begin with. Sadly, this….ummmm….church, is largely put together with family members. My suspicion is that they have no set of checks and balances to keep their ill-guided, hateful, anti-christian views in line with Gods most holy, sacred word. If they did, they certainly would not act as they do. I say: God bless our soldiers! And, God bless the Patriot Riders who stop the mouths of these hate-filled people!!

Signs are great for target practice. When the sign is gone all you have left is the post holding it up :) Just kidding but it really does disgust me that these people bring so much more hate into the world than already exists. There agenda does not even make sense in regards to the military.

  8. Really says:

There is a good documentary on this church. It is all made up of family members and they are all just brainwashing each generation of children that they bring up.

  9. Dan Eldridge says:

    Wow! How sad is that?

  10. Jerry Muelver says:

@Really says, “There is a good documentary on this church. It is all made up of family members and they are all just brainwashing each generation of children that they bring up.”

That description applies to every church of every religion. That’s not enough of a distinction. You may have to differentiate more on the basis of the content of the brainwashing.

  11. Runaway slave says:

These people’s opinions are just as valid as the the opinions of those in favor of war on drugs.Their thinking is less violent than that of the drug warriors and their spoils.Slaughter misery and populations of caged people, that is supported? This is less offensive than cops who get paid to be toads of organized crime enforcing an illicit black market instead of protecting and serving.

  12. Really says:

@Jerry Muelver. Jerry that does not apply to all religions and churches. Only in your godless mind. Also another common liberal trait.

  13. Jerry Muelver says:

@Really – “Common liberal trait”? Yeah: rationality. Looks like we own it.

  14. Really says:

@Jerry Muelver. “Yeah: rationality. Looks like we own it.” Own away buddy. We will see how far that gets ya.

  15. Jerry Muelver says:

@Really – Rationality will get me as far away from Westboro Baptist Church thinking as humanly possible. You’re going with the alternative? Good luck with that!

BTW, do you actually think Westboro is the only church that (1) has family members who (2) pass their beliefs along to their children? How would you have a church without #1 and #2?

  16. Really says:

Jerry. Common sense would keep most people away from the westboro church as well as any other that practices things that are not morally right by any standards. Calling themselves a baptist Church does not make them Christians. What they are doing is not in line with Christianity and you are lumping everyone together. This makes me feel sad for you more than anything Jerry.

  17. Jerry Muelver says:

@Really – I’m not arguing that Westboro Baptists are at all representative of other Christian churches. Read my post carefully, I’m saying ALL churches, of ANY religion, fit your initial definition, “It is all made up of family members and they are all just brainwashing each generation of children that they bring up.” They all are made up of family members, and they all teach (you call it “brainwashing” because this particular teaching is not to yourliking) their children what to believe. That’s how churches work! You’re focused on the differences, and I am looking at the similarities.

  18. Really says:

Jerry. West Boro Baptist Church is made up of immediate family members. Most Christian Churches are made up of family members of different families. While similar, not the same. West Boro teaches hate, not a Christian value and not the example taught by Jesus Christ. Traditional Christian Churches teach about Christs love for man, acceptance of him as our savior and how we should treat each other. Similar in the fact that they are passing along a teaching, but again not the same because the teachings are far apart and West Boros teachings are not in line with what God says in the Bible. West Boro teaches by force and misery against those that are in many cases already suffering from a tragic lose. True Christianity teaches with love and compassion and allows you to come to Christ when you really believe and not when they tell you to believe. Again not the same. I hope and pray that one day this all makes sense to you because there is more to it than you think :)

  19. Dan Eldridge says:

I always find it rather, ummm…interesting, when folks label all churches as being “brainwashers.” Especially, in light of how much “brainwashing” goes on every day in our public school systems, social media, the political arena, etc. I do know this: The Bible does state that “…we are not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.” I know all-too well the negative connotation that typically goes along with the word, brainwashing…and I agree with that when it comes to the likes of the Westboro church, the media, politics, and the political arena. However, there is a good bit of our society that really does need a change in the way they think of some things. It really is sad that there has been so many bad witnesses, that people have used that to then have a negative image of our Creator God. Quite frankly, I have been a bad witness at times. But, that does not negate the fact that God has a plan for every one of our lives. I encourage people to not run God, or the idea of him, through the filtering system of the westboro church, or some other “christian” that has been a bad example. Rather, get ahold of a bible and pray that God will show you his plan for your life as you read. God bless!!!
