Prison Overpopulation & Drugs
New Federal sentencing guidelines went into effect today for possession of crack cocaine. For possession of 5 grams or more, the sentence was dropped from 78 months to 63 months. Estimating that over the next 15 years, this would reduce the Federal prison population by 4,000. You can watch the CBS News video here.
I don’t totally agree with this idea, because I feel that crack cocaine is a lot worse than marijuana. I have heard many stories of people who have lost their lives to crack cocaine. Their homes, their spouses, their jobs, etc. How often do you hear of this happening with someone who uses marijuana? And how many people are in the prison system for marijuana offenses. It would make a lot more sense to me for them to change the max penalties for this than for crack.
