Langlade County Humane Society – We want to help!
It is a disappointment to me that the Langlade County Humane Society does not already have a website and I am sure this is due to lack of funding. As a local resident I feel it would be a good advertising outlet for them. As such, as webmaster of antigobuzz.com, I would be more than happy to create a page for this purpose and update it, etc. With the hours of operation for the Langlade County Humane Society, I think a webpage would provide a good tool for people to see the available animals any time, day or night. Here’s hoping we can work together and get something setup!
—————UPDATE!————–
After talking to some people, we have now added to our site the animals for adoption at the Langlade County Humane Society! Please, if you are looking for a pet, adopt one!
———-UPDATE 04/15/08———————
The following email was received by a member of the Humane Society. This is a prime example of what we are working against. We have decided not to honor their request.
As a member and volunteer of the Langelade Humane Society, I’m requesting that you please remove the current Humane society blog. I am asking on behalf of the residents (animals), and employees’ request. It is obvious it is being used out of animosity, and the information is being construed to the public to the point it is detremental to the harmony of the shelter.
.

@ Truth I know all the things that u stated are true but when u r talking to one of the employees and that employee can see that I am watching my child and that she isnt doing anything to get hurt then i dont think it would be to much to ask for that employee to not act like i am being a pain for asking about the dogs. I have a LOT of experience with dogs as i said before and so do my kids so i dont think its to much to ask to not be treated like an inconvience or like i dont know what the hell i’m doing and 1 other thing the employee i am speaking about is an employee and NOT a volunteer i know this for a FACT and i have gone to 2 of their monthly meetings and volunteered!!!
Well, So Irritated, Shame on that employee, maybe if this insodent bothers you so much ( and it does) you should bring it to that person on a personal level and hash it out then something could change and others won’t have to go throu what you have. It’s hard to confront problems, I know, But with the right attuide and the right words said things can be smoothed out. And maybe you’ll find your dog. and maybe it’ll shed light to why you were treated in such a mannor.
Sometimes these things are missconscruded and made worse by not being talked about.
You must care about the shelter and the pets that live there, your a sencitive and intellegent person, I can tell.
No excuses, but sometimes the stress of a job builds up and a otherwise friendly\ not rude person is devoliped, at no falt of there own, and undesired by the one it’s happing to. A detox of sorts is needed and the only way the shelter staff is gona receve this well needed break is for the Society as a hole to function like a well knitt family and for everyone to truley eknowlage how much of a work load each person takes on there, Way more than the avrage body can Phisicaly and Mentally handle.
Truly if the people make you uncomfortable or up-set you this much there are many other shelters to adopt pets and many other places to spend your time helping out in our community !
well, the holidays are almost here, and the weather is, and has been so lovely, I hope lots of the fallowers of the LCHS have been donating time to walking dogs, those poor dogs have to stay indoors alot in the winter because of the cold weather, they get bord and develop nasty habbits, like barking and chewing, so DONATE those Rawhides and Smoked bones, Carrots and Treat balls., and don’t forget the ExLg box of Cheereos’, All of these things help keep dogs mentally sound. The stress of being and living in a stressful enviroment causes alot of mental tourment and well just STRESS ! Every one konwe what stress does to humans……… (depression, weight loss, anger, lonely-ness, mood change, and more) even 30 min. of compassion & company will make a difference in a dogs day this x- mas !
I think it should go without saying that if you are “volunteering” or “donating” that it shouldn’t have to be recognized by the whole community. YOU know that you did something significant, and the animals appreciate it. That is the most important part.
Frankly, adds cost money that the Humane Society does not have. When adds are run, they are paid for through donations made to the LCHS for that purpose (generally by people who are affiliated with the shelter, but are not employed there).
I know that sending thank you notes is a thoughtful gesture, but currently the HS doesn’t have the staff to do something so time consuming. Especially during the holiday season when people that do volunteer are busy with family affairs, and ALL of the work falls on the employees. If people would commit to volunteering on a regular basis, that would be a potential project to undertake. (Plus, thank you cards and postage aren’t cheap either)
I have donated to the Humane Society in the past and will continue to do so.
With that being said…I am wondering if anyone knows if there are any food pantries in Antigo that will also accept donations of pet food. I would hate to see someone have to give up their beloved pet just because they fell on hard times.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! To all who supported the LCHS Holiday tree & wreath sale as well as the ongoing food & supply drive. All of your donations were, and are greatly appreciated. We can’t THANK YOU enough for your support. I would love to see a pet food pantrie. Again on behalf of all the past, current & future reseidents of the LCHS THANK YOU! Without the continued support of the community many of these animals would at the least be homeless. Vikki Carbonari (LCHS Board of Directors Member)
Well it’s the new year, and the suns getting warmer and I bet that the dogs are going stir crazy, get out there and walk a dog for the shelter, take them into that huge pen first to play and play’em down a lil’, and then go for a walk, Go Cuddle the lonely blind chi. thats there, better yet be a foster and take it home for a week or two.
Be a Better person in the eyes of others, make a difference once a week in something or someones life.
I tried to create a pet food pantry about 2 years ago in Antigo and didn’t get very far. I could not find anywhere to keep it stored and accessible to the public. I thought having an area at the food pantry would work but there is a law that you can’t store human food with pet food. If anyone has any ideas and is willing to help get it organized, call me through the LCHS and we can work together. Even if its putting a empty container at the local grocery and pet food suppliers, and be willing to pick it up and find a place to store it.
The shelter workers have their hands full with direct animal care and I would want to see more put on them.
Look for BIG changes in the board next month!
I visited the humane society just a month ago, the smell in the office and the original building was awful, deplorable in fact. The un-delightful aroma of ammonia was unlike any I have ever smelled in that building, How is it that they can conduct business with the public if they do not present them self’s as a clean, sanitary building ? I do understand they have a lot of animals to care for and I do understand the animals make messes and will and do smell quite a bit, what I do not understand is why did the shelter smell like a (uneducated breeders facility) at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, why with 4-6 persons “working” on any given day, they can’t have the place presentable by the time the public has access to view the animals. When I visited I also noticed the new building had more than 1 sick cat in it, the last time I visited the employees raved over the new cat house and told me it was to be the building in which NO sick cats were ever to go, because that building was to be, hands down as All Adoptable cats, not 50% – 70% adoptable and the rest exposed to illness. What happened to the structure and pride the shelter once possessed?
So the shelter has transported a big handful of there cats to other parts of the state, and ware the adoption rate is higher, and they’re all getting adopted HOOREA ! and there @ petsmart too. I think it’s really nice when the shelters can help eachother out. I see that the mom and the 10 puppies are doing great and getting big, There are ALOT of OLDER DOGS at the shelter right now, LONGING FOR YOU an older dog is still a dog, still loving, and playful. It seams like the colder months are the hardest on everyone, Do something nice this spring for the hard working ladies over at the huname society, take them some Office Flowers, or Subs from Subway, offer to man the phones while they go grab some lunch and take a break, even a little thing like writing down messages and taking calls is Apperciated.
With this big snow storm, I’d bet that the shelter could use some help shoveling out the kennels and the walkways, that’s alot of snow to move ! We always talk about the donations that the animals need but the employees have needs or should I say things that they use on a daily basis too. Like cofee for guests and them selfs after all whats 8am. with out coffee ! TP wich I asume is ordered in bulk, But a donation could be made tward that alone. Tissues, and Wipes. Candy, Gum, or Munchies, or tea mix, ….. you say they should buy there own, well maybe they should, but whats the harm in taking the hard workers of the shelter Goodies once in a while, they do have a kitchen and they do have alot of Volunteers and Other Actual Workers that come through on a regular basis, that may not have access to those little things that we take for granted, The shelter is a Community place to help the animals and the people, and I’m not saying that they should start Feeding ALL the strays that stop in, but to have things on hand it there is an additional need that should arise.
Just wanted to leave my story here, we adopted a dog from the Humane Society she lived a week and had to be put to sleep. I sent the letter below to the Humane Society and didn’t even get a reply. I’m not looking for reimbursement, I wanted an acknowledgment that they heard my concerns and are addressing them.
Dear Langlade County Humane Society:
I adopted an emaciated Weimaraner from your establishment on April 18th, 2012 her name was ‘Sally’. Prior to bringing Sally home I met with your staff to find out if she had any problems I needed to be made aware of. I was told that while she was throwing-up when she first arrived that had ceased after being wormed, she was vaccinated and other than being underweight she was fine. You told me that you knew very little about her, that she came in as a stray and had been with you for about a month. You told me she was eating but just wasn’t gaining any weight.
Upon arriving home on April 18th, I could tell that Sally wasn’t well; she just wanted to sleep. I contacted our Vet and she was seen on Friday April 20th, Dr. Wendy said she should be on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory for her tail. She also received cortisone shot to help with the pain. The following day she was back at the vets to be fitted for an e-collar because her tail was not healing properly. Sally was throwing-up quite frequently, wasn’t eating or drinking much and didn’t have any desire to do anything. Dr. Wendy and Dr. Taylor suggested we put her on a bland diet for a few days but if it didn’t clear up to give them a call. On Wednesday April 25th I contacted our vet and she was admitted to their facility because she hadn’t stopped getting sick. Thursday April 26th I received a call from Dr. Taylor that Sally was in a lot of pain, she had complete kidney failure and had been suffering in this condition for some time, she should be put to sleep. I arrived at 2:30PM and Sally was laid to rest, one week and one day after I adopted her.
I expected a much higher level of service from your company, and I am quite disappointed. Why was an animal in such poor condition put up for adoption under the assumption she was a healthy animal- just underweight? Why was she not taken to a veterinarian after she started throwing-up at the Humane Society and did not gain weight after being there for a month? The cost of the test was minimal, $50 to save her from over a month of suffering.
I cannot stress how heartbroken, disappointed and upset I am that she was in the care of a ‘Humane’ society but was obviously neglected. Isn’t the purpose of a Humane Society to provide BASIC care for sick, injured, and unwanted animals? She was placed in a pen where she was throwing-up and re-eating it for over a month, continually getting weaker and weaker but no one did anything for her. No one stood up for her and said what was painfully obvious-she was in desperate need of veterinary care and should not be placed up for adoption.
In addition to the heartache I missed several days of work to care for her, we spent over $600 on her adoption, care and to have her euthanized.
We waited four years to make an addition to our family and our hearts were broken in just one week, I’m hoping my letter will prompt a review of how animals are cared for at the Humane Society- especially ones that have an obvious issue like Sally (Lola) did.
Rayna – this is SO sad, and I am very sorry for your loss. I hope that your letter will reach the right people and something will be done in the future to prevent another instance like yours.
Rayna Oesterreicher – Because the original blog post is so old, we are putting your letter in a new post altogether, which you can find here: http://antigobuzz.com/blogs/2012/05/15/langlade-county-humane-society-please-acknowledge/
@ Rayna, I can not tell you how sad that story is. How dreadful for you ad your family to go through such heartache. It just saddens me that when I go to the humane society, it is absolutely a mess, it stinks, it is dirty and the animals are a far cry from being humanely treated.
I go there to see the puppies and the dogs. Just to visit. While there, NO ONE gives me the time of day. No One even acknowledges that I am there, and they are sitting around talking, and hanging around. How bout clean the pens, or give these poor animals some one on one time to let them know they are loved? Nope, just sit and complain that you have a hangover, or there is too much to do or blah blah blah.
The new building, lets see, the community and other priveate sources helped pay for that new building that was supposed to improve the surroundings for the animals? Yeah, I think not. The cats are over run in that building and it smells so incredibly bad that one can not even go in there. I think the board members need to take a good long look at who is running that place and maybe get someone in there that would be willing to run that place like it should be. Clean up the filth, the stink, and really, can you give a few minutes to at least clean the office? That place is deplorable.
I am almost embarrassed to think that I donate a substantial amount each year to help those precious animals, only to know they are not being treated humanely. Maybe this year, I will give my money to another organization who will actually put my money to good use and not use it to payroll lazy, non caring humans.
