Vulcan Brunswick Closes Today

AntigoBuzz Home

According to news reports, the Vulcan Brunswick plant in Antigo is now closed and sent it’s employees home today. So, another mark on the board for Antigo businesses closing. It shocks me that apparently the employees were not warned of the closure. The Journal reported that people came to work like any other day and were greeted by security officers who then sent them home. They will be receiving pay for the next 60 days, and severance pay will be forthcoming.

70 jobs are lost. How is Antigo going to cope with this!? It is one thing to have a small cafe close where there are a few employees, but, a plant like Vulcan with 70 employees is really sad. Where are those 70 people going to find jobs in Antigo right now? There just aren’t any!

And what will become of the plant now? Will we be knocking that down in the near future also?

There is a good article on this HERE.

I agree and it makes me sick how they did it. How cruel…those people had no idea what was coming to them when they got up for work that morning….

That’s the problem with businesses now. The workers just do not matter. It’s sad because they never would have made it that many years without their employees and then they are just put out o pasture. I don’t know if our city is running this businesses out, or if it’s poor management and marketing. Whatever the case…the workers pay for everyone elses mistakes.

The Vulcan closed due to the plant being moved to NY. Apparently, they can operate for much less there.
My question is after listening to the mayor speak about how the city will stick together and these workers would be absorbed into other companies, how much did the city know about this? Was there a point when the city could have step up and asked what it would take to keep them here?? Could we have offered them some kind of tax incentive or program to make it more cost effective for them while keeping a business that employed a large amount of our community employed?

Great point Alexis! What you say DOES make me wonder what the city knew beforehand and what could have been done to prevent the closing! I also doubt these former Vulcan employees will all be “absorbed.” Where will they go? It’s such a sad thing. Especially the way they were surprised in such an awful way right after Christmas when everyone has bills to pay! There are rumors that there is something else going on in the VB plant and that maybe a new company will be occupying the space soon. Does anyone know of any truth to this?

I think it’s sad that the company finds it “cheaper” stay in business in an expensive large city like New York, and cannot find means to stay in Antigo. Something is wrong with that picture.

Not neccessarily NY city, just somewhere in the state of NY. I believe they have existing plants there.
