We are new to home schooling and would love to hear any advice from parents who have been through this. Are there any local clubs or organizations? A place to share ideas or tips? Maybe plan field trips or outings with a group of kids?

I’m not trying to say don’t homeschool your kids, but if they’re high school age, I would maybe reconsider. With school shootings, bomb threats, drugs and alcohol, and the idea of bullying, homeschooling really looks like a good idea. If your kids are younger than high school you probably wouldn’t have to deal with those things (maybe some at the Middle School). But high school is supposed to be “the best years of your life”. With football games, sports, prom, meeting new people, and being around a lot of your peers, the opprotunities are endless. But with homeschooling, unless you find a good club/organization or have a lot of neighbors with kids the same age, they might be missing out.

If your kid(s) are high school age, I would try asking their opinion. Another idea: I have a friend who’s homeschooled until 11 in the morning, and then comes to school for the afternoon, and he said he likes that idea since it’s a little bit of both.

Thank you for your input DF2Y. Our children are very young and we really do have a “good reason” for homeschooling right now. I’d tell you in person, but not on here. The biggest worry was definitely having other kids this age around, so we enrolled in 4H and also a few other things. There are also friends from the previous school and Sunday school. I TOTALLY agree with you about High School! It was definitely some of the best years of my life too. I would never want my children to miss out on that. We are hoping to begin regular school full time as you say, by eighth or ninth grade. Because we are new at this, we were hoping to get some tips and tricks from people who have been through this before. Maybe … some warnings so we don’t make the same mistakes!?! Anyway, I must say: I’ve read quite a few of your posts and I am very impressed by the things you say! I see that you are very young, yet very grounded and quite wise for your age. I think you should run for office! Your ideas, the way you communicate and your reasoning skills far surpass your peers and most of the officials who are presently in charge of our city! Have you ever considered this path? You’ve got my vote!!!

  4. DF2Y says:

Well it sounds like you have a great plan, so hopefully you can find someone with experience that can give you some pointers now. No matter what, I wish you the best!

I appreciate your comments about me! I really don’t have an idea of what I want to do after school, but once I get settled down and everything I plan on running for either city council or the school board, depending on my career. Judging just by your posts you would have my vote (well probably my parents right now) as well!

    Once again, best of luck!

home schooling is great if you live in Antigo..it’s either that or go to the Antigo district and have your kids morph in to bald headed banjo players than can swim!! LMAO

My daughter had a friend who was home-schooled last year and returned to the high school this year. I don’t think she would do it again if she had the chance because she missed out on alot and is now a bit alienated from her classmates. Maybe if you start out with home schooling and don’t know what you’re missing, you would be okay but I do agree with DF2Y that the student does miss out on alot of social and educational opportunities during their school years.

I am bitter about Antigo schools. My high school days were the WORST days of my life. Unless you have a powerful last name your chances of playing football, making the “team” or group are slim to none.

I hated my middle school days. I came home with black and blue marks, black eyes just about everyday. The Adminstration did NOTHING.

In my grade school days I got bullied and picked on so much that I would go home and throw up EVERY NIGHT. I had to take medication to calm my nerves in the 6th grade. The Adminstration did nothing.

In 4th grade I could not go out for recess because students would go in my desk and steal my homework. The students enjoyed seeing me get yelled at by the teacher and watch me cry. I almost failed the 4th grade because I was not completing assignments. Which I stayed up till 10 PM doing homework the night before but somehow the work was missing from my desk. Adminstration did nothing.

In 5th grade someone planted cigarettes in my desk, told the teacher and I got in trouble. Teacher didn’t believe me.

Year after year referendums to build a new school got rejected by voters.
Not many in Antigo cared about the conditions of the high school, or what the students had to deal with. Progressive community??

I hope the Antigo School District dies a slow painful death. I will never support the school nor will recommend any child going to Antigo. I know I graduated over 20 years ago. But.. I believe from talking to other parents and students things have not changed.

I have to say that the people who caused a lot of problems in my younger years are now a part of our prison system. They became murderers, drug dealers, sex offenders, and arsonists. I blame part of it on the School District of Antigo.

  8. out-of-towner says:

Simplemind, that is so sad and awful. Stories like this make me sick. I am so sorry that happened to you. I hope that the administration of the Antigo School District is reading this. Do they have an anti-bullying program in place now? If not, they should. All schools should.

To enforce an anti-bullying program, ALL links in the chain need to be on the same page — the parents, teachers, administration, and school board. If there is a weak link, anti-bullying programs are not successful.

  9. DF2Y says:

I didn’t have good experience with the middle school either. No rules are really enforced, and when something major happens to you (my 7th grade year was ruined by a bully), they dont let you know anything that’s going on. I was told the kid would get his classes switched, since I had 4 with him. Instead, he was switched out of 2, and when I asked why, they said they couldnt tell me anything due to “student confindentiality”.

Elementary school was awesome for me. But there are seriously more problems at the middle school than high school.

  10. JamieLynn says:

So, I, um…think public schools are a great place to be. This is an especially good avenue for parents. ‘Cause I’m gonna have a kid on my hands 24/7 if I want to homeschool it, and that’s no good. Plus, I can’t just get rid of it…somebody would trace it back to me n-e-way. So it’s really the best path, all things considered.

  11. Sherry says:

You can’t get rid of it? Do you mean your child??? Seriously, I hope you aren’t a parent if that’s what you meant.

  12. ddddd says:

Simplemind – Your post made me cry! I am so sorry you had to suffer this. I have to tell you that this is the EXACT same reason that we have basically been forced to homeschool our kids. We never dreamed we’d be in this situation, but here we are. In our case, it wasn’t just a few of the kids bullying and getting away with it, but also one, well sort of two of the teachers! Although the kids hit, kicked and continually called names, the teacher’s emotional and mental abuse was far worse. Like you, it seemed the more we complained, the worse it became. Nothing was ever done. We considered legal action, but knew deep down that it was just hopeless! We too are not one of the “names” in Anigo and unfortunately it was some of those kids causing the trouble. As far as the two teachers … pure evil! In over 2O years, I see that no progress has been made at all. SHAMEFUL!

  13. ddddd says:

And by the way DF2Y- I’d like to get a hold of the creep who bullied you! You are such an awesome kid! From what I know about you … I’m sure you are only stronger for what happened, but no one should have to suffer this. I’m sorry you did.

  14. I would like to see some reviews and ratings on local businesses in the area by you the citizens. I would love to see a rate and review blog or if someone would like to state an opinion good or bad about a establishment, this would be the place to do so. For instance I am new to the area and am wondering which are some good child care centers and which are to be avoided, a review or star rating would be great.

  15. It seems that Antigo Head Start has canceled it’s afterschool program what is the story behind that does anyone know.

  16. Sherry says:

That’s what I heard today also, teachers and parents there are very upset. Word is they are closing within the next two weeks.

  17. So with Head Start going out what good child care is there in Antigo.

  18. Head Start is not closing folks it was only a rumor

  19. I have heard from sources that Buzy Bee is the best place to enroll my children for child care and preschool. Can anyone concur this information.

  20. antigo says:

i personally would not, i hope things have changed since mine went there. just make sure u check into all the facts, like the employees and any actions taken against the school or any employees. and make sure your kids use only their things not someone elses.

  21. Actions taken against the school, that sounds pretty serious. When did your children attend? and can you give any info as to what kind of facts I should be looking into? I am fairly new to this area so I don’t know anything good or bad about the employees or otherwise that is why I choose to write here in Green Bay sites like this are used often for these types of reasons.

  22. antigo says:

as far as actions i mean displinary, from the state, as in violations, my children were in their care for almost a year. i believe there is a site u can get this info from or that u can ask the director, Jodi, at the school. or try social services.

  23. I have met the staff and most of them seem pretty organized and knowledgeable. I was told that the staff has changed over the year though. I like the ladies in the infant room, There is one that sings a lot and seems to really enjoy children. When did your children attend?

  24. antigo says:

there r still a few that work there when we attended there. i just hope u check into any violations that have been taken there. some of the teachers r great, i can think of at least 2, but no more than that.

  25. I checked the website on violations and what there was listed was minor for them. In fact I looked up other centers in the area and they too had the same violations and one other center which is a quite popular one had some violations which I think were even more severe. I do feel very comfortable with Miss Jean and Miss Heather, are you familiar with them?

  26. admin says:

Here is the website address for checking on violations, etc.: http://publicapps.dhfs.state.wi.us/clic/public/search.html

This will also be posted in the Parents Lounge section of the site.

I am sooooo sick of the whole “sheltered” thing! Arrrg. It is such a “tired” excuse for putting your kids in public school. All 6 of my children were homeschooled and we had a blast. We had tons of friends and involvement. We did wk.ends in bigger cities at times experiencing culture and people and food. Instead of vacationing at a water park in the Dells, we drove across the U.S.A – now that’s some rockin’ Social Studies/Geography/Science etc….
Truth be told, when I meet most public schooled high schoolers, it’s really dissapointing. They’re…well…dumb. They grunt 1 word answers to your questions. They look “bored” and disconnected most of the time. The Homeschoolers I meet are interesting, articulate, and don’t think in terms of age or grade, they mix w/ everyone! My kids went through their teens w/ out alcohol, drugs, premarital sex, fights w/ us and the garbage and heartache EVERY ONE OF MY FRIENDS W/ THEIR KIDS IN PUBLIC SCHOOL went through. We had our best times while they were teens – jammin’ out in our livingroom on instruments, having other HS families over for campouts and all night game nights! Now we are great friends as they all make their own way in life…w/ good jobs (no college…only trade school). So, whatever! Sure you’ll get your sheltered weird HS’s out their, just like you get your socially geeky kids in PS.
Whew…I needed to say that :*)
