If a murderer is released from prison, as opposed to serving a life sentence, then it should be evident that the court felt that extenuating circumstances lessened the severity of the crime. Upon release, in the eyes of the law, the offender has paid his debt to society for the crime that he or she committed. Other than not being allowed to vote or own a gun, a released felon has the right to return to as normal a life as possible. Most released murderers have killed out of passion or carelessness.

Those that commit crimes of control, crimes of personal invasion, crimes of moral and mental violence, commonly referred to as “sex crimes”, don’t do so accidentally. They have a sickness that controls them and either forces them, or induces them, to commit these crimes. They should not be released, but in a society that rewards bad behavior and thinks that the mentally sick can be rehabilitated by temporary incarceration, the walk the streets in search of prey after too short a time. The National Sex Offenders Registry is our politicians way of telling us that Christian Right has spent their money well.

If you beat some drunken bully to death in a bar fight I don’t care if you move into my neighborhood twenty years later. On the other hand, if you rape a ten year old, or anybody else, I would really like to have your address.

I think there should be a database available for public view for ALL violent offenders. The public has a right to know that they have a robber, a sexual predator, a murderer, an assulter or anyone who has been convicted of a crime against another human being in their community – no matter how long ago this crime occurred. Does this exist, and if so – why not? We should put a firm voice to this issue, and fast!
