@Common Sense - really? Change your moniker, apparently you didn't get the memo that Wal-Mart in Antigo shortened their hours. It is not longer "an ease of doing business".

Why are you crazy people even shopping at the Wal-Mart? Go to Copps, Fleet Farm or Lakeside. Can't find it? Order it online or go to Wausau.
Come on people - you are not that ignorant!

Thinking a big part of the WalMart success along with low prices for a larger selection of exactly the same items and their friendly greeters concept was a whole variety of things that shoppers became more demanding about. Many demographic and societal changes happened to occur at the right time for their growth and they wisely took advantage of the changing trends. Gas stations, cheese factories, shoe stores, clothing stores, etc all evolved because of peoples change in habits and preferences long before WalMart came along.
1) WalMart is open when people want to shop... the stores that are now gone had high prices, narrow open hours - only open when most people were working - and in some circles, the number of two income households increased. May not have been an indicator of many good things in the economy but trend became a fact non the less and was a major issue.
2) WalMart provides shopping carts ..... clean, open, safe by all comparisons, free parking spaces .... Wide open aisles..... open and airy environment.
3) Most people like the greeters..... like the much shorter check out lines by comparisons... Their theme and use of of "How may I serve you" folks available for assistance was a significant hit compared to many other alternatives at the time. 4) Many folks like to shop / meet friends / more in a bigger store than in many smaller ones.
5) Many more items, closer to a one-stop shop... misc items, grocery.... all leads to a much faster shopping trip. Time is valuable to many that have a life. You can wander and browse - or dash in and make a quick trip of it..
Obviously, things are going to change .. but suspect most of us will be shopping at WalMart ---- and doing many other things through them --- for all our lifetime...

Well when Sam Walton invented walmart im sure he was not thinking of how it was going to ruin towns he had good intentions. He tried to make a store where you can buy foods and stuff at low prices instead of having to pick from local shops that can charge whatever the heck they want. My grandfather lived in Arkansas and on more than one occasion had seen and met Sam Walton. He said even when he became rich he would still walk through the stores with his normal clothes and was nice to everyone.Walmart is not a problem it is a solution if other companies cant survive then it is their own fault they should buckle down and lower their prices like Walmart and then they would get the same amount of customers. You cannot blame a certain company for all the local economy problems shops downtown were running out of business before Walmart even arrived.

Not a big fan of the way Walmart treats their employees and the fact that we subsidize them because we have to provide state aid to them because their pay is so low. A company that is making the profits Walmart does should pay a living wage and provide reasonable benefits. When they don't the tax payers have to in the way of welfare. It is really just shifting our tax dollars into the profit margin of Walmart. That being said I have bought mushrooms and strawberry's there many times and never once have I gotten any rotten ones. Meat is not the best but that is why I don't buy it there and the people that work there are all nice to me and my family.

I just want to say that almost every time I go walmart the sales slips are wrong. And their meat is very bad. Hamburger is not fit to eat. I dont know how many times have got strawberries, mushrooms and lots of other items and find them half rotten. Had to take them back. And no one is friendly at all.

The door greeters now stand at the front of the registers and direct customers to shorter or empty lanes, along with straightening the shelves and clothes. Another thing corporate does that doesn't make any sense. Right!

What happened to the Door Greeters I haven't seen any there lately? That is always nice to hear hello or how's your day going today. Funny that the alarm sensor doesn't say thank you for shopping at Walmart everytime it goes off when you walk through since they don't have people out front doing that anymore.
