Antigo Mayor Mike Matousek Quits

AntigoBuzz Home

As reported in the Antigo Daily Journal today, apparently Mayor Matousek has resigned as Mayor of Antigo. Tim Kassis will take over the role of Mayor for the time being. Matousek is taking a job in Oregon as a minister. Mayor Matousek’s wife, Chris, has been a “leader” in the process of the building and funding the new Antigo Playground, which is not finished.

Looks like my prediction was correct…Rebecca Larson has resigned her council post to relocate to the west coast. Perhaps some on here was also correct when they previously stated that she was going to follow Matousek and his family there (?). Another interesting appointment ahead for the city council now.

  2. Fed Up says:

To Voice: I can confirm that is exactly what occurred. I thought something should have been done to them for getting up and leaving in the middle of the official meeting, but maybe it was better in the long run that they left. Those that remained had an intelligent conversation about the project and some great ideas were exchanged.

  3. Sherry says:

Fed Up, can you tell us what individuals left the meeting???

  4. I am glad that the conversation among intelligent minds was had but MORSE, EDER, and KAPUSTA should at the very least be censured. They were not elected to leave meetings in progress. After the next election, they will have no meetings to attend.

  5. Fed Up says:

Morse and Kapusta for sure left right after the voting took place. I am not sure if it was right after or a little later and Eder got up and left too. The timing of his departure did not look like it was right with Kapust and Morse but I was busy watching a lot of other people who voted against helping to fund the Lake District improvements. I thought it was odd that they left before the meeting was dismissed, but strange things happen at these meeting lately and you just never know what direction they will take.

  6. S.T.A.N says:

As far as Mr. Kapusta goes, he’s not the nicest person to deal with. As for his job on the council he goes to bat for our neighborhood. One of the residents in our neighborhood have noxious weeds, trash and junk piled in their yard. He’s done everything in his power to get them to clean up their yard. For his efforts he received a 5 page letter from the police dept. to not bother them anymore because it constitutes harassment. Thanks to the APD now I get to look a a pile of junk everyday. Their solution was for everyone else to put up a fence. The solution for them to take care of their yard was apparently too easy.

  7. ignorant people suck! says:

The problem with Kapusta is he thinks he is a cop! He has no authority, yet he goes around sticking his chest out bullying everyone about the smallest things. He goes a little overboard sometimes, even though his intentions are good. If he showed up at my doorstep telling me to cut my lawn (not that he’d have too) I’d know what I’d tell him. The second time he did it he wouldn’t be happy with the outcome.

It is unfortunate that APD couldn’t take care of it for you, however they are governed by what exactly they can do and what they can tell the people to do about the complaint.

from the ordinances (available on the city website):

    (b) Abatement by court action. If the inspecting officer determines that a public nuisance exists on private premises, but that the nature of such nuisance is not such as to threaten great and immediate danger to the public health, safety, peace, morals or decency, the inspector or sanitarian shall file a written report of such findings with the mayor who, upon direction of the council or its designee, shall cause an action to abate such nuisance to be commenced in the name of the city in the county circuit court in accordance with the provisions of Wis. Stats. ch. 823

I doubt they would take the time to write a 5 page letter to him-I’d like to see it. I have some dumps around my house that I would like to see taken care of and I wish the police would do something about them as well. There are way too many junk vehicles sitting in front of houses. People wonder why nobody wants to come here-junk vehicles and junk buildings and nobody does anything about them. You probably got one of those lazy cops that couldn’t wait to get back to the office and watch the Brewer game.

  8. S.T.A.N says:

The meeting is tonight. Maybe you should go and read his 5 page letter that you doubt they sent. I know the laws, believe me. You definetely don’t need to put them on the blog for me.

  9. Fed Up says:

Just for information/clarification: It was stated at the meeting that Mr. Kapusta was not given a 5 page letter, but the pages of the ordinances which clarify the laws and why he was being charged with harassing his neighbor/constituent. Sounded like a neighbor squabble to me that finally hit the big time.
Rumblings about it was that the final straw was that the neighbor/constituent was accused of having rats by Kapusta and that he turned them into the health department. The health department investigated and found no such thing and when the neighbor found how who filed the rat report, he filed the harassment charges against Kapusta. I don’t know if I have all the players right, but I guess it has been an ongoing feud between two neighbors who have different ideas of how to keep their yards. I for one would not want my alderperson thinking he is the police. The police did not find anything illegal when they investigated the complaints and I guess the only thing that was ever found was a noxious weed, one lone burdock growing in the yard that got missed behind the garage and had started to bloom. Once it was discovered it was removed/cut and the problem was solved but Kapusta and/or his constituent kept bugging the neighbor to get his/her yard pristine like theirs and I guess the neighbor didn’t appreciate it.
S.T.A.N. if you know more, or if I have it wrong, please feel free to elaborate or correct.

  10. S.T.A.N says:

It sounds like you pretty much have it right. . . this ‘feud’ has been going on for years. Since before I moved here. I think the reason that they are so hard on the ‘trashy neighbor’ is because everyone else does keep their yard nice. I think pristine is a little too much. Personally I think that piles of junk, piled nicely in their yard, is stull junk. It has gotten better. The cars, tires, and actual garbage is gone and they keep their lawn under a foot:)

I was the neighbor that was falsely accused of calling the health dept. The ‘neighbor’ stood out in her front yard and screamed at me as I was walking w/ my two children. Hopefully they don’t have rats because I’m in a very close vicinity and have kids.

I also think the reason ppl, myself included, are so disgusted with them is because they received a home from the block grant and it is already completely destroyed in two years. They don’t take care of it at all. They have taken out a window and just put boards over them. The doors are broken. There is a sewage leak that hasn’t been fixed. The inside is absolutely disgusting, there’s literally a path through the home w/ piles of junk on both sides. This could have been a new start for the family but instead they are so used to getting everything for free they ruined it.
They also wanted to get a block grant this year to put up a garage. This from the neighbor himself. Thank god he coudn’t/didn’t.

There are many more issues I personally have with these neighbors and their ‘way of life’ that have nothing to do with their yard but we’ll save that for a different blog.

And before anyone tells me to mind my own business and find something better to do. They have burdened me with their problems. They have come over at 10 pm at night to use my phone and the son pushes his way into my house at 4 in the morning and then hides from the cops in my garage and truck, etc. etc.

  11. Does anyone know who was appointed to the 6th ward? Please tell me it wasn’t Stimac or Moorhouse…we don’t need another kook on the council!

  12. Kim says:

Patricia Shinners. I am so glad it wasn’t Moorehouse.

  13. Hallelujah, MORSE is out of city government come April. EDER and KAPUSTA will probably join him. Thank you to Mr. Hessedall (spelling?) and Ms. Turnbull for running against those two imbeciles. Good luck to both Mr. Brandt and Mr. Cernoch in the mayoral campaign, both seem to be good men. Antigo’s future is brighter already!

All the comments that were on this blog regarding Dale Soumis, the City Administrator, were moved to the new blog, which is here: http://antigobuzz.com/blogs/2009/01/20/antigo-city-administrator-dale-soumis-arrested/

  15. Foolish as usual, Mr. Jameson (your real name, of course)

So now the economy is the fault of Mr. Soumis and our City Council. I guess you haven’t heard of this little thing sweeping our nation called a recession.

How many jobs have been lost in Antigo? I’m not sure, exactly. From what I have seen, we have had a positive change here in Antigo. Businesses such as Merit Gear and Sears have expanded, new businesses such as Goodwill and Holiday Inn have come. The closed Vulcan plant is now home to a new business that is expanding to even more jobs than were lost. The former County Market building is being used again as well as new stores in the former K-Mart strip. Old, useless buildings are coming down and contamination on the land is being cleaned up to be prepared for new business.

Yes, times are tough all across the country and Antigo is no exception. That cannot be laid on Mr. Soumis. You can blame him and the council for the recent economic downturn, but you will continue to do it from the minority and without 3 of your so called Fantastic Four. If you had the superior argument, one would believe that eventually one of your ilk would win an election. I don’t foresee that happening.
