According to the article in the Antigo Journal, the police here will be cracking down on users of illegal fireworks.
An excerpt from the article:
As a rule of thumb, those which explode or leave the ground are illegal. Those that don’t, including sparklers, stationary cones and fountains, toy snakes, smoke bombs or caps, are not.
“Most of our problems in the past have involved individuals showing total disregard for their neighbors and other people’s property,” Brandt said, adding that his agency has already received complaints of unwelcome displays this season, well in advance of the July holiday.
Brandt said his officers will use discretion in investigating complaints but advises that punishment — both for the seller and the user — may be stiff.
Some opinions on this would be interesting.

thank god! It has been nice not hearing the neigbor kids shooting off bottle rockets all day! It wouldn’t be so bad if they would just do it on the 4th. Not to mention the neighbors that don’t think they have to clean their used fireworks from my lawn. Many communities now have zero tolerance.
I have mixed feelings about it. Its a shame parents buy their kids a bag of fireworks and leave them unattended. I saw kids at the park shooting bottle rockets at each other and no parents to be found. You would think people would be concerned about safety and respect their neighbors..
Its terrible for the people who enjoy fireworks and follow the rules. The few who break the rules spoil it for everybody.
I wouldn’t mind the city offering permits, detailing specific hours, locations, requiring a certain number of adults to be present, accepting full responsibilty for clean up, Assuming the liability of someone getting hurt, and proof of insurance. But why tie down the city’s resources???
Kids! Last year our problem was adults! We were up until atleast 2 am, now my husband has to work at 6 am. Everytime I would go outside to see where they were coming from, they would stop. I would get back into bed just to have them start again. I could hear the adults drunk, I just couldn’t see where they were at. Needless to say this year we won’t be around.
I know that these types of discussions came up last year when someone wanted to open a fireworks store at the corner of 9th and Superior across from Brickner’s Collision Center… August 07 Council meeting I believe.
At this meeting, it was stated that Class B fireworks (the ones in question) were legal to be sold and owned (which may have changed since last year as I see different information is quoted in the ADJ) and just about everything else…except use them. So, as long as you buy them and want to just look at them and leave em on your shelf… I love legal dumb-a$$ery
But yes, leave the fireworks to the professionals…like the ones who will be doing your 4th of July presentation out at the High School!
Haha, our 4th of July presentation at the high school, which lasted 10 minutes last year. It took more time to get out of the parking lot than it did to watch the show. Since they wont let people use them in town, it would be nice to see the city do a MUCH better job than last year.
Those items were legal to buy, but you need to have a permit to buy them and fire them off-that is where the big problem comes in. The businesses weren’t checking for permits (which of course nobody would have had anyway).
With all of the ranting about budget problems and the city spending taxpayer money, maybe they should eliminate the fireworks show completely-or do like the professional sports teams and get it sponsored:
The 2008 Amron 4th of July Fireworks Show presented by Pomasl Fire!
I’m sure they would pay big bucks-or maybe not.
Wasn’t Potowatomi sponsoring fireworks at one point? I want to say after a race or something? What ever happened to that?
I think we should be thankful that we have any fireworks show at all! According to the news, it sounds like many cities have cut them out altogether this year.
I think the Antigo PD did a pretty good job today with the illegal fireworks. They had the city well covered too. Yes, I still heard them everywhere (which never has bothered me), but it wasn’t as bad as years past.
I’m not sure how the crackdown went, but I will say that I saw the best display of fireworks Antigo has ever put on. My wife and kids were thrilled and so was I. Thanks to all who made that possible.
I agree Voice. Especially after last year’s 12 minute dissapointment, it was good to see a great show like we had back in the 90s and early 2000s.
I was there, too and it was really good. I usually watch the show in Aniwa but couldn’t make it there this year, they always put on a terrific show. I certainly wasn’t disappointed with Antigo’s fireworks!
In addition, the fireworks were much quieter in my neighborhood this summer due to the stricter rules.
Irrelevant damn spam here. Time for clean-up.
