How Many Cops Does It Take to Cross the Road?

I am seriously shocked at what I saw today when driving past the Langlade County Fairgrounds on Highway 45. At the main entrance of the grounds there was a City of Antigo Policeman and then at the intersection of North Avenue and Highway 45, there was a total of 3 policeman, 1 of them a city cop and 2 county cops. Can you guess what all of them were doing? Helping people cross the street to go to the Fair!

Now, I can understand that there can be issues with traffic on the highway during the nightly closing of the fair and maybe a policeman helping with traffic – 1 cop, NOT 4 OF THEM! I really feel that the taxpayers money can be better spent than paying for 4 cops to help pedestrians cross the street to get to the Fair because they are too cheap to pay for parking inside the grounds!

  1. duh says:

most of our cops dont do anything anyway. but helping people is what they are hired to do, so i dont see a problem with this.

  2. BIGNEWSJUNKY says:

Well, now shame on you. All those people who were too cheap to pay for parking were probably saving their money for a few extra beers while they visited. First things first!!

  3. BIGNEWSJUNKY says:

And besides, If every one is at the fair drinking it up, after the fair would be the time for the police to be there. Not before. they have soome strategy them cops!!

  4. ignorant people suck! says:

you probably didn’t see the mile long back up from each entrance, now did you? Maybe they should have put just one cop out and let the back up continue for the rest of the night. Don’t knock them for getting things going. I’m sure I would still be standing on the side of the road if they wouldn’t have been there to stop traffic and help us across. Maybe you should be upset with the fair board for the lack of foresight and planning and a lack of parking which caused the unfortunate back up in traffic. But instead, you choose to rip on the cops because they had to come along and rescue others from their problems. I’m sure if they weren’t there helping you would have started a new blog about how the cops don’t even show up for the huge traffic jam because they are too busy eating donuts at Kwik Trip. I’m sure they would rather have been doing “real police work” then standing in the middle of the road waiting for some idiot to hit them.

  5. DF2Y says:

I agree wholeheartedly with ignorant. I’d rather see 4 cops help people get across the busiest street in town than have someone get hit. It’s not like they wouldn’t leave if they got called.

  6. true colors says:

We shouldn’t be mad at anyone! Thursday night was tons of fun with well thought out activities, evident with the massive crowds! Be happy for a successful event in Antigo! jeesh…

  7. Again, some people seem to think they know law enforcement better than the professionals. Let’s leave it up them folks, Antigo is a low crime area and we are fortunate to have great men and women on the force.

  8. 4EVER IN ANTIGO says:

I am happy they had soooooooooo many cops to help people cross the road safely but where are they when my 5 yr old in on a carosel and 14-15 year olds are on the same ride flipping off their friends as they go past them and swearing making A**es of themselves………

  9. Sherry says:

I agree, our police force is doing a good job of protecting us in this small town and if there was a real emergency…they’d be there, too! Keep in mind that we are also a poverty-stricken area and saving $3 by parking across Highway 45 may be allowing for a child one more carnival ride. Nothing is cheap at the fair anymore, you know.

  10. Simplemind says:

It ought to be. There is a Police officer for every 250 people in Antigo. As far as I know that is more than Milwaukee, Madison or any other city in Wisconsin.

  11. ignorant people suck! says:

Actually, there are only 14 officers, not including the Chief of Police and Captain which would mean there is one cop for every 579 people based on a populaton of 8100 people. Merrill, in contrast, has one cop for every 520 people (not including administrative personel).

  12. Fed Up says:

Thanks for giving the facts “ignorant people suck”. Sure makes a difference to see your numbers compared to “simplemind”. 4Ever in Antigo, would you really want the police to take care of troublemakers like that? It would seem that the fair board or those presenting the fair should address those situations by kicking them out. It is not illegal to flip off your friends, bad behavior yes, but not illegal. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t agree with the behavior whatsoever but I sat through a demo derby where adults were doing the same thing to each other in front of children. I am not sure this is policeable behavior, but I am sure some of them did meet up with the officers later in the evening. Leave it to some to spoil a good family affair for others I say….including young adults and the people that raised them. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I am sure you were a good parent when your kids saw the bad behavior of others and told them this is what happens when you don’t have manners and education and your children will not emulate such things as they get older. You sound caring and concerned and that is what those teenagers lacked in their lives evidently. Heck, I saw one mom wearing a tee shirt that said “If you think sex is a pain in the ass, you’re doing it wrong” and she was walking around proud as a peacock. Yuck I saw and I pity her children.

  13. pdog says:

and whats there pay and how many cars do they have? lets face it for such a poor town we do spend a lot of money on force. Do we need to spend all that money is there that much crime hear

  14. DF2Y says:

    pdog-

I don’t know about the county, but the city has less than 10 vehicles, and usually only 2-5 officers are working at a time. there isnt a whole lot of major crime here, but for a town of our size we have a major drug problem. i dont mind seeing my tax dollars go towards making antigo a better place for all of us.

  15. F:-) the Police says:

the whole systems flawed. one officers got a case of the clap does drugs and is a real Arse. but yes I’d rather see them help people across the road then parked eaten 58 cent donuts from WalMart

  16. ignorant people suck! says:

i would assume that since you have knowledge of the officer’s STD’s that you gave it to them.

  17. Dynamite says:

Get a grip people……….u complain that the cops are there cause u think they could be doing something more important and what is more important than protecting the people of the city they serve………and u would be b*tching your *ss of if they hadn’t been there cause of how long it would take to cross the highway………the job of the police is to serve and protect……….so shut your pie hole and let them do their job…….did u ever think that maybe people don’t park on the grounds cause they thought to themselves this is a wonderful and beautiful day for a walk with my family…….and also I don’t think the police should be persecuted for protecting you wine a*ses………

  18. chester says:

these antigo cops are worthless. why do we give badges to these clowns who have barely managed to get through the 2 week technical college course it takes to become a cop. they are incompetent!

  19. Laughing Stock says:

Chester, the Basic Law Enforcement Academy is a 13 week program actually. And I’m sure you are very successful entrepeneur too, ha. Get a life you dead beat. If I had to guess I would say you’ve probably been in trouble a few times with the law. Don’t blame the police for your P!$$ Poor decision making and ethics.

  20. chester says:

Laughing Stock, i was teasing about the length of the program. But now that i know it actually is a “13 week program” it is a bigger joke than i thought. and dont try to church it up by calling it an academy. its a fly by night operation that just passes these primates through so they can get their badge. if i had to guess i would say you are one of these circus clowns they call cops

  21. Seriously.... says:

Really people…..are you kidding me? Do you not realize that by having 4 police officers on the streets helping traffic and pedestrians….they are also showing themselves for the drug dealers who will take full advantage of the five year old…or the 12 year old…it is their jungle of drug fun…so if a cop was on every stinkin corner…and one every 25 feet from each other…THANK GOD!!!!! At least they are showing themselves…and not letting the druggies…and the trouble makers take advantage…..jeez….so next year…go to the board meetings that take place to set this thing up….tell them you don’t want all the police there….see what happens then…..I’ll bet it would be the last year of any fun in Antigo. At least the police are doing their jobs…in which we pay taxes for…..to protect and serve the community and the people of said community. Get a frickin clue!!!!!

  22. moving forward says:

    well said

  23. Without_doubt says:

Chester, shouldnt you be over in the the jail complaint section complaining about the food?

  24. Laughing Stock says:

Chester, please, enrich us all with what you do for a living? I think we all are in need of some laughter. And no, I’m not a cop. I work in networking. I wish when you need help, that the cops would look at you and extend a certain finger in your general direction. However, MOST cops are decent people and have to put up with losers like yourself everyday and still manage to get up every day and do it again, even with people like you riding them.

  25. Myopinion says:

    Who takes time to count how many cops are assisting with traffic control, then takes more time to log in and complain about it on the internet. WHO GIVES A SH*T PEOPLE Move on, and talk about things that do matter! This society is FULL of snively whiners. Concentrate on what you do for a living and let the cops do what they do. {edited}

  26. jistme says:

Chester, since you’re so well educated I’ll help you figure out this cop thing. 1st of all, a police officer needs 60 college credits to become an officer (something you probably don’t have). The Academy is a 13 week course consisting of very physical and extensive training. I also find it very funny how silent you became on here when Laughing Stock asked what you do for a living. We’re still waiting. And for the rest of you people who don’t like the way the “cops” handled the traffic control, you would be the same one’s b*tching if you or your child was hit by a car when trying to cross that busy street. Move somewhere else if you think the police here aren’t doing their job.

  27. Ben Drinken says:

If I remember correctly, it was around 1972-73 a guy was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross the hiway at the corner of North Ave during the fair. To serve and protect, is what we pay our police force to do. Assisting pedestrians and traffic control during special events is a good thing.

  28. ddddd says:

I’m just saying … it seems like people who bash the police are always the ones in trouble with the police.
