Apparently some Antigo residents are gathering names on petitions in order to try to get Aldi’s to put a store here. This has been going on for a bit now and I am told that they are close to meeting their goal.
The petitions are available at: Hardees, Quality Time, Remington’s and Family Dollar.
…

I signed…we need an Aldi’s.
Who is the petition being sent to? Aldi’s looked at the now occupied Goodwill section years ago and turned it down. Has something changed?
they sent 1300 signatures to corporate, so we will see what happens
I think that and Aldi’s would be wonderful. My husband and I often times drive to Rhinelander to their Aldi’s. It is a great way to save money, and we all know that we do need to be that way these days. Lets get it here!
We need Aldi’s…whya? I ahve been to the Aldi’s in Rib Mountain and Rhinelander and NEVER buy anything there. Their prices are higher than most local stores. IF you are comparing apples to apples the Aldi prices are more than often higher than local stores.
Not so sure, I am a huge comparison shopper, I go to Aldi’s at least twice a month to stock my pantry. I figured I save on average 200 dollars a month just by getting the majority of my stuff there. There is very few of their products that I do not buy because our family does not like. I hope that it goes through, it would be a great asset to Antigo.
I agree, this town needs any break it can get these days and a discount grocery store would be quite an addition!
ALDIs has lower pricing especially when compared to WALMART AND TRIGGS…..However not everything is a deal, just like Walmart and others have clearance items below cost at times.
See how far this went listen here people we have to remove the people making the decisions ALDIS would come here in a heartbeat but we sit back and hope, Enough lets get the people out and get the new in and make this a great place to be, easier said than done, but with evryone as one we could right this ship ANTIGO
sorry…but it may never happen, as great as it would be…from what i understand, there are now rules about Aldi’s and WalMart being in close proximity to each other. (yes, i know they are in Rib Mountain, but it is supposedly a NEW rule and those are both pretty old stores.) im not quoting anyone or anything, its just something that was explained to me a while back when i was still a WalMart employee. rumor and misinformation? possibly, but its also possible that it is in fact true that there is now an agreement between the two corporations that they will not build new stores in a close promixity to each other. i hope its not true, because an aldi’s here would be great…but it may also not be possible. if anyone knows where to find out if its true please let me know!!
i do not think we need an aldis, i lived about a block from one in appleton but never went there, they were overpriced and you had to pay to use carts and bags, or bring your own. i did however love shopping at woodmans, they were cheap and had an amazing selection of just about everything
As with every topic, there are pros and cons. For those who say that Aldi’s prices are high, there is also a common theme – they don’t ever shop there…so how do they know the prices are high? I do most of my shopping there because their prices are typically lower than anywhere else. Their quality is good, but their foods tend to have less shelf life. They have excellent prices on their fresh meat(s), but if you buy something, you better be ready to use it or freeze it right away. They also have limited hours, so I actually have to make a point to get there. If you are looking for specialty items, there’s not much chance you’re going to find them at Aldi. As for paying for carts, that’s only partially true. You have to pay a quarter to get the cart, but you get you quarter back if you do the responsible thing and return the cart. Yes, you have to pay for bags…if you want to. Most people, if they don’t bring their own bags, use the empty boxes that are located all over the store. I don’t see this as a problem, considering the huge stash of unwanted bags I have from every other store. I re-use them for garbage, but I will never have to worry about running out! A lot of stores have actually started paying you if you bring your own bag. Granted, it’s only a nickel or a dime, but it’s essentially the same as charging you for the bag if you use theirs. Last but not least (and this is my own personal pet peave) is that, for some reason, everyone insists on calling it Aldi’s…there is no “s” in the name, and I can’t for the life of me figure out where it’s coming from! LOL
Oh, yeah – and can Antigo REALLY fiscally support ANOTHER grocery store?
I agree we do need a aldi’s here in Antigo. There are so many low income people here in Antigo who would be able to buy more for their families.Look at all those people who got layed off work and having a hard time feeding their families. People on food stamps who can do more. I think it would be a great thing to have and prices are not that bad either. They are alot cheaper then other stores.
If its such a big issue to have Aldi’s and Walmart so close together then petition Aldi’s be in one of our small outskirt towns. Mattoon use to have a grocery store, which was disgusting, but the convience for the people who didn’t live it town was great. Since that store has shut down, see if we can get an Aldi’s in Mattoon??!! I drive every other week to either Wausau or Shawano just to go to Aldi’s. There prices are great, and I save a ton of money. I still have to visit the regular grocery store for specific items.
We sure don’t need that store way over by Mattoon area what good would that do ppl. still would have to travel & if they don’t have money to buy food than they don’t have money to be running over there.
if you are going to bring in that store to Antigo than at least put it some where like over by past Fleet farm there are alot of empty store places that way.. where the old sears was or even where the furniture store was that went out… Plus what good is bringing that store here when the food only last a couple of days or less.. I sure in hell wouldn’t buy food that is old or not going to last that long its a waste of money. also I wouldn’t even feed that to my kids they wouldn’t eat it anyway cause they look at dates on everything if its out dated they don’t eat it at all they don’t drink Milk that is out dated by 1 day.. so why would someone want a store like that here……….
Aldis may be cheap for a few things, but most of their stuff is way too UNHEALTHY, I wouldn’t buy from them. I have one body and would like to treat it good.
I shop at Aldi`s once a month..I shop at the Rhinelnder store and have never got out of date or bad food. I like their selection of Fruits & Veggies. I have never seen anything I have purchase go bad in a few days….plus I like the fact that I can purchase alot of items..where if I were to purchase the same items at Walmart..I wouldn`t be able to feed my family..I will continue to shop there..
Antigo NEEDS an Aldis, LOVE Aldis.
Aldi is OK.. But honestly the prices are not that great. Shop carefully when you go there. You will find the packages might be an ounce or two smaller than the brand name stuff and when you figure out the price, you aren’t really saving anything.
Also.. Aldi has a strict policy of outdated items, fruit and veggies. They are mystery shopped by the company quite frequently. Dates are checked quite often, even on the flowers.
Aldi is OK.. If your going to spend $200 on groceries.. You’re probably still better off going to Woodmans in Appleton or Green Bay. Of course I have bought things from Share Wisconsin.. http://www.sharewi.org/Order/MemberOrderEntry_Menu.aspx
I don’t like that program.. When we tried it, you had to pay for everything up front, and it would take three weeks before you can pick them up..
We definately need an aldis here in Antigo.Going to wausau is a long trip with the kids in the car. Drive there buy groceries by this time kids are cranky then we have to drive home and that is alot for a little person
just for the record,….the new grocery store in Mattoon is under new management and it has been completely redone inside. they have done an excellent job of bringing this establishment back. they are nice folks, have excellent meats, and they make just about any flavor bratwurst you can imagine. give them a try, you won’t be disappointed. they have the best cheese curds i’ve tasted in a long time too. what have you got to lose? take a nice drive and check them out.
Aldi’s would be a great way for families to stretch their food dollars whether they be cash or EBT. As for the stuff being unhealthy ????? You will find the same “unhealthy” store brands everywhere that made NO SENSE. The selection for fresh fruits and veggies is better and cheaper than Walmarts are most of the time and the selection of frozen veggies and fruits are always more economical. Been There is right those who complain have no clue because they do not go to Aldi’s. I have been shopping Aldi’s for over 22 years (In Milwaukee before I moved up north) and know what is a value and what might not be. Balenceing a household food budget is not rocket science but does take some effort.ALDI”S will help!!
P.S. There is a new Sav-alot in Keshena similar to Aldi’s I want to check out!!!
I would like to start by saying that I like Antigo, and try to shop locally whenever possible. However, we do make the drive to the Aldi store in Shawano, two to three times a year to stock up on canned goods and staples. The money saved makes the trip worthwhile, even with the increased cost of gas.
We went there today and here are some examples:
tomato soup 49cents a can
cream of mushroom soup 59 cents a can
pure olive oil 17 oz. for 2.99
18 oz. box of cornflakes 1.69
dried cranberries 8 oz. for 1.39
nice, fresh carrots 2 lb. for 99 cents
This is just a sampling; but you get the idea. I don’t think any store in town can match these prices, even with their store brands.
I am a little puzzled by Stace’s comment that Aldi foods are not healthy. I think they are comparable to the same type foods sold elswhere.
When I found out about family dollars role in getting aldis here you won’t see my face in that dumpy miss manageged store again even in your new store I will go to Lakeside always!
What about Family Dollar? I’m confused.
letting a petition to be signed in your store is a conflict with other business in this town the store manager with some smarts should have stayed out of this not smart!!!!!!

I feel very vulnerable in writing this post. I have (in my opinion) always been one of Antigo’s biggest “shop locally” backers. I still am, but this is a time I have to make an exception. I would advise any family raising children to shop Aldi’s. After reading there was a petition being signed to bring that store here, I decided to look into the matter. I went to the store in Wausau and checked it out. Robin Fan was right! She failed to mention that canned vegetables ie corn, green beans, peas etc, were 44 cents a can. I bought a can of each, have tried them all, and they are excellant! I bought a box of cornflakes that she had mentioned and could not tell them from the higher priced cereal. I bought the olive oil on her list and I can not tell the difference from Colavita evo that I have on my shelf! I am going back to Aldi’s and I will buy a case of each vegetable my family likes, to put in my pantry. Buying quantity will save on the price of gas. I kind’ve feel like a Benedict Arnold for writing this, but the price of groceries has sky rocketed, and the economy is not good, so if you can save money on groceries, the money you save can be applied to your other expenditures. If anyone thinks they would be afraid to buy Aldi’s products because the might be UNHEALTHY, guess again! I am a food faddist, and I can’t wait to go their again! Next time I’m going to try their meat. I have heard they have the best ground beef of any store.
P.S. I should have proof read my post! Trust me folks, I do know the word is e-x-c-e-l-l-e-n=t. NOT excellant. Sorry about that!
Just wondering.. is this the same group or community that has spent years bashing Walmart when it came to Antigo ?
Understand Aldi is like a “Sams Club” store?
@CommonSense. I don’t understand your question. By group or community, were you referring to the people who started the petition for an Aldi store, or Antigo as a whole? I, myself, was never opposed to a Walmart store coming to Antigo. More stores make for more competition. It keeps store owners on their toes. When I visited the Aldi store in Wausau, I found it to be nothing like Sam’s Club. I like aldi’s better.
c
Aldi is nothing like a Sam’s Club. You do not have to pay a membership fee to shop there, and you do not have to buy in bulk, or buy large quantities. You pay a quarter to take a shopping cart, which you get back when you return the cart. You must provide your own bags and bag your own groceries. There is not a huge selection of things, other than basic food items. All this keeps the cost down.
.
I think we need competition .In all types in this town . So whoever is keeping it from happening should get voted out . and we should start new .
I need to make a retraction on a price I quoted on my March 17 post. I wrote the cost of canned beans, corn, peas etc. was .44 cents a can at Aldi’s. That was correct the last time I checked their prices. I was at their store yesterday and the price was .59 cents a can. Maybe the day they were .44cents per can they were on sale, or maybe they raised the price .15 cents since then. However I still bought a case of each, as that is still lower than most stores, and the vegetables are much better that Green Giant or Del Monte. All other food products had stayed the same price as Robin Fan had quoted.
you made me laugh their ground beef is a joke like walmarts you can’t even make a hamburger with that crap idiot check it out and maybe the pink slime in it?
@ go antigo. Hey, go antigo. You must have left Antigo to go to Aldi’s to shop. Right?? How else would you know anything concerning their ground beef?
@go antigo – Can you please explain why you felt it necessary to include “idiot” in your post. Can’t we just stop with the name-calling?
@Russ. Thanks Russ! It’s refreshing to read a post from someone who shows class! Class is something you can not buy. You have to be born with it!!
Dear class act love the buzz , before you put spin on everything and makeup stories I never went to aldies to buy that junk I was at a friends house that tried to grill the beef it was bad even our host felt bad! I feel strongly about local business where your dollars stays in your town and they care about your community unlike aldies walmart etc. Aldies does not have a quality meat dept along with walmart FACT so thats why I consider stupid remarks from people as idiot !
@go antigo. I have no intention of continuing to answer your posts. I have much better things to do with my time. One thing is for certain, I don’t make up stories. I’ll leave that up to you, because if you thought for one minute I bought that story about you being at your friends house to grill—GUESS AGAIN! I may be an “idiot”,
but I’m NOT stupid. You wouldn’t know about Walmart’s or Aldi’s meat department unless you’ve shopped there. Nice try, trying to blame it on your neighbor.
Dear Buzz you said I went to Aldies to buy the bad meat and the other blog said they had the best meat in town so wrong! I went to a friends house that Aldies meat and said it was not even good you are a spin master!
Um, if coupon clippers can shop til they drop and actually come home with money, why does Antigo need yet another store to help you save money? Why can’t you work with the great businesses that are already in town? And if you have to drive a distance to save money (which never made sense unless you had to go there in the first place, or were buying truckloads), why not take advantage of the other stores’ 10 for $10 sales and other sales?
I bought into the hype surrounding Aldi. It didn’t work. Of course I also bought into the hype surrounding Walmart. I came home with clothing that was spotted after one washing (spots that wouldn’t come out), and food poisoning. And the only shower curtain I bought that ever rusted came from Walmart.
Hi Mr.O’Brien, Your post makes sense, and it sounds like you are an Antigo backer which is good. I’m well aware of the ten for ten dollars sale which runs every week in Copp’s flyer. But come on Mr. O’Brien, you can’t feed a family of six off the ten fors. “Sometimes” I have seen canned vegetables on sale but they still can’t beat Aldi’s price of .59 cents per can. I’m sorry to hear the shower curtain that you had purchased from Walmart rusted. Where else in Antigo could you have bought a shower curtain? Fleet Farm, Dollar Store perhaps? Do really think they would have been of a better quality? I doubt it! Sad, we don’t have a Penny’s store here any more! We lost it because our locals were running to the mall in Wausau to shop. I am sorry to hear you had gotten food poisoning from food from Aldi’s. I just started going there, but I know of dozens here in Antigo that shop there, and they are just fine. You see Mr. O’Brien, it’s a little late in the game to start keeping your dollars here in Antigo. People should have thought of that when we had a beautiful down town. A town where you could buy a pair of shoes, men’s clothing etc. But for the younger people it was cool to run to Wausau or Appleton mall to shop. Now I guess if we don’t get a local Aldi store here, we will just have to run to Aldi’s in Wausau to shop while our kids shop Kohls.
Does Aldi carry birth control at a discount?
Yes, you can feed a family – of any size – with the 10 for 10 sales. You stock up… just like you do when shopping Aldi or Sam’s.
Funny how you say that Antigo is finished, yet you’re rooting for another store to come to Antigo? Why – if you’re finished with Antigo?
People were supporting local business all along. It’s you and your ilk –
– that made Antigo what it isn’t today. What it sounds like is that you’re all about you, and what everyone can do for you.
Do you even know where Aldi food comes from? Read up on it. And how did people in Antigo get along without a Penney’s or without an Aldi or without a Kohl’s – for years? Some people will never be happy, no matter what Antigo has to offer. Hopefully those people will decide that trips to other communities are just too much – and will move there, permanently.
@ James O’Brien. Are you for real?? You’re pathetic! Your post makes no sense at all! Like I, and my ilk made Antigo what it is today! Where were you and your cohorts shopping when we had David’s and the Guy Shop in town? Where were you buying your shoes, when we had the Family Shoe Store, and B&M Bootery here. Where was your wife or whatever buying her clothes when we had Mary’s, Our End Of The Rainbow, Thelma’s, Fashion CrossRoad, Spurgeons, Bountiful Botique, Penny’s and others all operating at the same time? Where were you buying your gifts? At Molle’s, House Of Diamonds, Jessica’s Hallmark, Woodland House, or were you running north of town to K Mart to do your shopping. If you’re from Antigo you will remember we had the A&P store, Red Owl, Hunters, and Lee’s Super Valu to shop for groceries. No one had to go out of town to shop. There was enough competition here. It’s people like you who make me sick with your asinine remarks. Your remark about birth control is as asinine as it gets! Why don’t you wake up and smell the coffee? If you and YOUR “ilk” were putting your money where your mouth is, our town would be booming! Lastly, as long as you’re not ingesting the food that comes from Aldi’s, why should you care where the food comes from?
Sorry… but I have always shopped Antigo. What isn’t here, I don’t need. I am not the one complaining about Antigo, or insisting/bragging that I have to shop out of town. And I do not shop discount stores like Kmart… although they do provide jobs.
You say you made Antigo what it is today. What would that be, exactly? A town that you constantly criticize?
I am also not the one complaining about how difficult it is to feed a large family… you are. So – if you’re sick, it’s your own doing. And if the pathetic shoe fits….
@ James O’Brien. I think you need glasses. Or if you are already wearing them, I think you need a stronger prescription! Where exactly did I write that I had a large family? Did I not write you can’t feed a family of six on ten fors? I don’t have a large family, but I wish I did. Where did I write I made the town what it is? Buy those new glasses James! FYI (although it is none of your business) I tried to make Antigo a prosperous town. I was a member of the Chamber of Commerce for YEARS!!! And do you know, I never once saw the name of James O’Brien come up. When we were begging for volunteers to help beautify the city of Antigo by helping plant planters etc., guess what! No James O’Brien! If you had the brains you were born with, you would know that the Chamber of Commerce would welcome new businesses with open arms. Why would we not want to see another store come into our town to offer more employment. Of course there were always a few retailers that were afraid another store would cut into their profits. In reality, don’t you think this would be the cause of SOME people not wanting to see an Aldi store open here? If people are going to Wausau to shop Aldi’s, why not let them shop Aldi’s in Antigo? Look at the money they could save on gas, therefore having more money to put back in our community. In closing, let’s get one thing straight. I do shop locally! I have tried Aldi’s twice, and liked what I saw. It looks like you shopped there before me, with your food poisoning and all. My,my! It must have been a slip of the tongue. I look at the downtown area on a Friday night, and remember the way it used to look, but I can hold my head high, knowing I did everything in my power to keep Antigo on the go. How about you?
With that attitude, I doubt you’ve done any good for anyone.
The food poisoning came from a purchase made at Walmart. Try and keep up, sweetie.
A family of 6 is a large family. Or is this just an imaginary family?
I’d quit while I was behind. Jesus loves you…. I’m just not sure why!
Kudos to you Love the Buzz, for putting that wise guy O’Brien in his place!!
