Disgusting Eyesore at S. Virginia Street & Gruber

I myself have made more than one call to the mayor’s office complaining about the house on the corner of Gruber and S. Virginia St.  To no avail, nothing has been done, and the house still stands. Well, minus the roof as of lately.  I’ve also made a few calls to the county health nurse, that’s also gotten no response.  It’s really discouraging that my grandchildren’s sandbox is now the neighborhood liter box.  There is more than a great deal of ferrel cats roaming around that house, as well as the entire neighborhood.  This poses not only a blight on the neighborhood, but a health hazard as well.  One has to wonder if that one lone house has the ability to affect the property values of the entire block???  What does it take before the city will step in and do something about this matter?

i totally agree i have to drive past this house everyday and its just sad. there are no birds around due to the cats and they prowl around the neighborhoods searching well cant take them to the humane society cause they charge you for bringing in animals and u can’t kill them cause thats
inhumane and u can tame them cause theyre wild , what the hell do u do with them i say burn it down and sell the property. the old owners son is still in around he should do something about it.

Is this the house where the guy lives in the garage because the house roof has fallen in?? I believe it is!

  3. Hates-the-Plague says:

Would-be cat killers in Antigo ? I hope they end up the same place as Michael Vick and the deer torturers of Waupaca.

Kill all the neighborhood cats and you’ll be sure to get those “ferals”, right ?

Put a lid on your sandbox and take a Zoloft….Coo Coo Ca Choo

  4. STAN says:

I feel your pain. I live next to an “eyesore” myself. I hope you have more luck than I did. Their yard is still disgusting & now they have bags of garbage piled under their porch for all of the skunks and rats to rummage through. I also had few results w/ the health department or the police or the city council.

  5. lifes not fair says:

if u have such a humane heart for the wild cats we can send them your way. this is nothing like michel vick, his case was completely different. i dont care what u do with them, but i know there are less due to target practice of the neighbors or the poisoning of them with food. since there is no animal control who will take care of the problem its already to late.

  6. Stupid Should Hurt says:

I think that the feral cat situation is obviously a by-product of the house neglect. No matter where you go or live in the city of Antigo, you will find feral cats, whether you see them or not, don’t be mistaken my friend but they are there. I think the biggest issue is the concentration of them on that corner lot. I think that if something gets done about the house, something will get done about the cats all by itself.
And to the comment about they should put a lid on the sandbox and to take a Zoloft…obviously this person has extensively dealt with this problem for quite some time…I feel that they should have a little more understanding. Have you never been at “your wits end”??

  7. STAN says:

Wow. I walked past the pile of rubble that used to be a home. The garbage is disgusting and the house is disgusting. What’s really gross though is all of the cats. When you walk past they all stare at you in there little cat gang, like out of some horror movie. I feel sorry for the people that live nearby. My friend lives on Gruber St and couldn’t believe that I hadn’t noticed it previously.Well. . . I’ll definitely never forget it. I hope for the neighborhood’s sake that somebody cleans it up or at least buries the house and all the cats.

  8. ddddd says:

I’ll have to go by this house and take a look! Can’t the animal shelter pick up the cats? I mean, isn’t that what they are supposed to do? Do they just sit there waiting for someone to bring cats to them? Isn’t there some kind of animal control in the city? Sounds like this has been going on way too long ……

  9. Stupid Should Hurt says:

Unfortunatly the city does not have an animal control. If you would like, the shelter does accept unwanted kitties, of course at an immediate charge. Oh and don’t forget about the additional fees that all the taxpayers of our fine city have to shuck out, to house and feed them all. Granted it is only for a short time of 21 days until they will be destroyed, because they have been deemed “too wild” to be adoptable. Moreover what burns me, is the newly elected Alderperson lives just a mere house away from these shambles. Let’s just hope that she too will be sickened by this enough to actually do something about it.

  10. Sherry says:

Poor kitties, that place is a disgusting mess! If feral cats are such a problem in this town, which it is, they will just go and find somewhere else to live. An animal control officer would definitely be nice for this community.

  11. ddddd says:

I went by there and GEE, it really is digusting! I saw at least 5-6 cats and I just quickly drove by. Poor kitties. I would hate to live near that place. I noticed a few very cute and well kept houses right by there too. So unfair to people who work at keeping their homes nice. I’m sorry, but I agree with “Stupid Should Hurt,” the animal shelter is sorely lacking! I can’t imagine not having an animal control department. That’s nuts!

  12. true colors says:

Hmmm, I must check out this disgusting eyesore…

  13. We're people too says:

I live near this house. It should be torn down. It is a problem waiting to happen. A couple of cats in the neighberhood is good. keeps the rodents away, but there are so many here.(uncared for) They are crawling with fleas and mange so bad some of them have places where there hair is falling out. This is a health haserd to the people who have pets and to people themselves. they are hunting the birds at my feeder and the rabbits I watch in my backyard. Alot of pets rome threw my yard and i dont mind,I have a pet also, but the scragly, sickly, uncared for cats hunting everything in site and stinking up the neighbor hood need to go. The city needs to do something. I Think if it doesnt have a coller,,FEED IT SOME HIGH SPEED LEAD.and send it to WM. Seens we are left with no choice. Im not going to spend the time and my hard earned doller to live trap them and take them to the humane society. (they charge you for it)As for the house.. Please no smoking around there..its a fire haserd if ya know what i mean.

  14. Jaxsin says:

Do the authorities realize that someone could get hurt having a run down peice of s**t house like that in a neighborhood? When will action be taken? When a kid get s bitten or scratched by one of those cats or some “adventurous youngins’” go snooping around and end up falling through the floor and breaking a leg, is that when someone will finally do something about it? Sorry to say but that’s exactly what will happen. THe authorities think if they close their eyes, it doesn’t exist…what an *ss backward town. Being charged for bringing in an animal? I’ve never heard of that. Where’s all the tax $ going to?

  15. ddddd says:

    AMEN TO THAT!

  16. Dynamite says:

I gotta say I agree with jaxsin…….unfortunately it will take some innocent child getting hurt before they will really see the problem……..I grew up on Lincoln St and one block from my house there was a corner that had several accidents on it cause there was no traffic signs for either direction of travel…..after a bad accident they finally put in a stop sign……..to bad it takes someone getting hurt before a long term problem gets fixed……
as for the comment about putting a lid on her sandbox and taking a Zoloft….I feel the person who said it is mean …….. she shouldn’t have to cover it……..who ever is responsible for the property that these cats are at should take care of the problem or the city officials should……..what is the world coming to that people can’t have things in their yard without having to stray cat/dog proof them……..PET OWNERS BE RESPONSIBLE AND DON’T LET YOUR ANIMALS RUN FREE……IF U DON’T WANT TO DEAL WITH PUPS/KITTENS ITS CALLED SPAYING OR NEUTERING……….

  17. lifes not fair says:

the problem is not the need of a stop sign its the crappy house. i have lived in this neighborhood for 28 years and there has never been an accident, slow down and pay attention. the lot need to be demolished and the animals taken care of, however, i’m not sure what they can do.

  18. Dynamite says:

I was not saying that there is a stop sign needed there…….the point I was making is that unfortunately it takes something bad happening before our city government sees the problem and takes it seriously and takes proper action…….it shouldn’t have taken a bad accident for that stop sign to be put up and it shouldn’t take someone being injured by that house or the cats before the problem is solved and the buildings demolished and property cleaned up to remove the safety hazard………and the cats taken care of before someone gets bitten or scratched…….and children shouldn’t have to worry about getting animal waste on them playing in their sandboxes either……and parents shouldn’t have to worry if their kids are safe playing in their yard because the cats are a danger to them due to the fact that they are wild and unpredictable………..if u had read word for word the comment I made u would have known the point I was making………

  19. james Harler says:

I know the onwer of that property, and he is very nice. However: What is it that the city will not recognize this property and a run down dump that needs a back hoe? They dont have a problem tearing down old buildings in the down town, so what gives?
As Far as the animals, the owner should be forced to take them to the shelter and be resonsible for the fees that come with it. he is the one that is feeding them and allowing them to be there. Other neighbors should not have to watch out for their yards and deal with others animals running wild. I dont blame any of them for getting mad about this situation. What about the ordinances? are there any against this? What about the condition of the property? Are there any ordinances or violations being broken? And if so, why are the authorities not doing their jobs? This really irks me also!!

  20. ignorant people suck! says:

nothing happens quickly in government. The process is long to raze buildings by government. As you can see, the McMillan and Strike Zone are now gone and I believe the house we are talking about should be going down very shortly. Maybe we could have used all the money from the walking path to make our town more beautiful by razing some of the junk buildings (i.e. SuperAmerica). I think it would have been a much better use of the money and would have made a bigger impact on the appearance of the city.

  21. lifes not fair says:

the house has now been ra

  22. lifes not fair says:

anyway the house has now been razed, however the wild cats still running the neighborhood still exist, he may be a nice guy but that doesnt say too much.

  23. Sherry says:

The neighbors are pretty happy that the house is gone, sure looks different and so much better.

  24. ignorant people suck! says:

catch the cats, feed them and take care of their health needs…or donate the funds to getting a true Humane Officer. The police department shouldn’t be burdened with animal calls like they are now anyway.

  25. Sherry says:

I agree, this city is in great need of a Humane Officer for our strays.

  26. robwatrp says:

Humane officer would be a waste. Mr. O that has the cats should be responsible/fined for the cats. As should all the other lazy people that have animals they don’t take care of.

  27. robwatrp says:

City Ordinance is 3 cats 3 dogs. Is he not in violation of this??

  28. ddddd says:

Congrats to all the neighbors that don’t have to look at that house anymore. I went by the other day and figured that if we all take just ONE cat, pretty soon they will all have a good home. So, I got out and tried to coax one over with food, close enough to pick it up. I tried for quite awhile, but not even one would have anything to do with it. They were hissing and scary. I had to give up. These cats are definitely feral. So sad. They need to be caught by a professional and tamed a bit. Maybe then they can find homes. They are only reproducing. It has to be done fast!

  29. Sherry says:

Kudos to you, my friend…at least you made the effort.

  30. shadyjim says:

All the pissin and whining you people do is unbelievable–no wonder nothing gets done in antigo! GO TO THE DAMN CITY MEETINGS AND B!TCH! Everytime i go i dont see very many people there to raise hell with the town fathers! All the businesses and manufacturing jobs are failing and your worried about everything except how to keep a dying town from going down the tubes! But you wont do anything about it except piss and moan!
