Antigo’s Bike Path & Boardwalk Controversy

According to the article in the Antigo Daily Journal, FOUND HERE,
Duffek Sand & Gravel gained the job with the lowest bid.  We
received the following email…

This is such a great way to spend tax money!  So glad Duffek got
the bid for the work because you know they need the money!
What an awesome way to spend 1.2 million bucks.  Lord knows
we so badly needed a walking path in Antigo… It will be a good
place for the rift raft of the town to hang out!  I really had no
idea as to where to walk before but now I just can’t wait…
thanks ever so much for wasting my money!

    Agreed.

  2. true colors says:

You are fools for not wanting this bike path – boardwalk. This is something Antigo absolutely needs! Typical naysayers naysaying. I can’t wait to use it, and it will definitely give visitors and locals something positive to do!

And to say Duffek doesn’t need the money is even more foolish…we’re in a recession, any local business could use the money.

By the way, if you didn’t like the idea, perhaps you should have attended the inland lake district meeting and voted. And if you did show up and voted against it…too bad!!!

  3. ignorant people suck! says:

yeah, the Lake Park area is soooo beautiful with its green water, newly constructed factory view that is now even closer to the water, a new pond made for factory sludge runoff, and a great place to allow mosquitos to roam freely and feast on walkers! All for the small price of $750,000. Sweet deal! But wait, even more money will be spent on it from the government. Thank God it doesn’t come out of our taxes. Oh wait, I forgot, I pay state and federal taxes too. What could I have done with a million dollars or so that more than 7 people will use?

  4. Antigo Resident says:

A recession is going on wow that is brand new information what do you think my complaint is about wasting the money a path right now is about…duhh that money could go for far better things than that! thanks for the news flash about the reccesion!

  5. robwatrp says:

Typical naysayers that think thier taxes fund everything. Its simple if you don’t like it, don’t use it!

  6. I Believe in Magic! says:

Seriously is there a money tree I don’t know about?? Please educate as to where grant or stimulus money come from? This is a directly from what was in the paper”Half of the project’s overall $1.2 million cost is being paid for through a state matching grant. The remainder of funds are being derived from two tax incremental finance districts and the Inland Lake District, which includes all property holders within the city limits.” Let me know where the money tree is I am low on cash !

  7. true colors says:

Let’s just sit around and do nothing and hope something changes for the better!

  8. ignorant people suck! says:

Has anyone driven by “Sh$t Creek” within the last week? Smells like sh$t, thank god the walking path will be there so I can walk by it and smell it for longer than when I just drive past it.

  9. robwatrp says:

Simple solution, don’t use it. I have been by the creek in the last few days and I smelled nothing shi**y.

  10. life as ususal says:

no but i did notice the stupid sidewalk by the dam, not even the soberest of people could walk on it straight, what is the point of something so ridiculous as a sidewalk that looks like the wizard of oz’s yellow brick road? wonder if the magnificent bike path will be like this also, what happened to simple is beautiful?

  11. ignorant people suck! says:

I guess you were 8 days too late. I haven’t noticed an odor there for several weeks.

  12. antigomom says:

I think you should all be thankful that we have this walking trail. The middle school kids just used it this week and it gave them an opportunity to get some exercise. Let’s face it, today’s youth are attracted to sitting around and being lazy. When I was younger I was more active than kids today. Now they have to DRIVE 2 blocks to a friends house rather than walk. I think if you are that upset about, don’t use it. I for one am going to use it with my 2 kids.

  13. Alexis says:

    OMG!!!
We “absolutely need” a walking and bike path. Are you out of you mind??? We absolutely need business and industry. We absolutely need clena air and water. What we absoluely DO NOT need is aanother waste of money!!!!!
The path goes along something that has for years been referred to as Shit Creek. Does anybody need a better view of that??? Does anyone need to be closer to stagnant water and weeds?
Oh and robwatrp, in an essence, our tax dollars do fund everything, you moron. If assistance comes from the county, city, state or federal government than it comes from our tax dollars. Did you think Duffek built and landscaped that thing for free???

And it’s good for our middle school because they need exercise???? Our middle school has a gym and has required PE credits. Maybe they should just take a walk down to Jaycee Park and use some on the many atheletic options there, if they’re so in need of exercise.

And last but not least, truecolors. You think that just because people are here posting comments that we’re not actually involved??? Myself and many others are at these meeting and ARE voting. Are you???

  14. robwatrp says:

OK smart a$$, but I didn’t say “our” tax dollars, i was referring to what you personally pay in taxes. You probably b*tch about everthing, but too bad your personal tax contribution doesn’t pay for everything. Thats what bugs me about people like you. Don’t change my wording to “ours” cause obviously we don’t agree, and neither do a lot of other people on here. You speak of industry and clean air and water etc… How about all the promises from Merit Gear, then change of plans, putting building on south side, needing land, and absolutely ruining green space next to our water source. City sacrificed the park to make Merit Gear happy and now what? Is ther anything in the building? I think the city and people who make decisions for the city do a good job weighing options when decisions need to be made to make Antigo a better place to live.

  15. robwatrp says:

BTW, “moron” ?? Because we don’t agree on a few things?? Shows your bullheadedness and lack of maturity to discuss an issue.

  16. Moving Forward says:

I have to say that I absolutly love the walking path. I kindof think as far as tax dollars go I would rather spend it on this than a lot of things. It must bother some when people remodel their houses as well.

  17. ignorant people suck! says:

problem is, Antigo doesn’t have the money. That is the whole point here. 750,000 is a lot of money to spend on a path that isnt NEEDED. You could have walked the same area without it being blacktopped.

  18. Fed Up says:

Just my two cents. Yep, $750,000 is a lot of money. It’s too bad that grant/loan money from the federal and state government come with strings attached that say it has to be used for this kind of project or that. If you don’t then you cannot have the money come back to the community in the form of a grant/low interest loan. They are not making grants and loans to communities for business and industry right now, but there have been such in the past and we have received some of that in the past. It is my hope when the opportunity comes around again we will get to apply again for those monies. BTW, if you don’t use the grant money for what they approve it is not given and your name goes to the bottom of the list for grant money in the future. The idea is that if you turn down money, you must not need it.
And just to be clear, no you could not have walked this path in the past. Paving it made it better for bikes and wheelchairs and such as will the remaining paving to be done. The path itself had to have alot of land cleared to allow ALL people to access it and not just the chosen few who have property next to it. Also, land had to be obtained to make the connections because these were not owned by the city and it was a real hodge-podge back there.
As I said, just my two cents.

  19. Alexis says:

“Moron” has NOTHING to do with me disagreeing with you. I thought I was pretty clear in my post regarding your comment of “Typical naysayers that think thier taxes fund everything”.

ALL taxpayers fund government programs. So if I’m a “naysayer” or totally behind a plan, my tax dollars DID go to fund it. Everyones did. Do you think that because I don’t support a plan that my tax dollars get set aside to be used on a program I do support and vice-versa??? So, in essence, my tax dollars DO fund everything.

BTW, the “our” I was specifically referring to would be us “naysayers”. And furthermore, I can lump us together, if we agree or not, because both of us together paid taxes that funded or should I say help fund this project. Do you like that termenology better…help fund rather than fund so I am not giving someone the impression I funded it single handly.

You don’t know me. You don’t know what my tax payments are or how much I give the government in various taxes. For all you know, I could have afforded this project single-handedly with my “contributions”, as I like to call them. And if I want to voice my opinion about how my tax dollars are spent, that’s my right. To assume I “b*itch about everything”
shows YOUR “lack of maturity to discuss an issue” as does the “smart a$$” name calling.
And what’s with “people like me”??? You don’t like that I voice my opinion? You don’t like that I stand up for what I believe in or what I think is right? You don’t like that I don’t always agree with how the city or county or state spends my money?? What exactly don’t you like??? Oh, wait…I don’t give a damn what you like or don’t about me. I have a mind and thoughts and feelings and I like to express myself. If you don’t like it…to damn bad.

Lastly, I will agree with you on one thing. I am a “smart a$$”. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  20. ignorant people suck! says:

Fedup! So, we should apply for grants and spend our money so we get more grants. We don’t need the grant money because we don’t need to spend our portion at this time. Not a good argument to me.

I see your points on the other issues. Oh yeah, I’m down to $5,000.00 a walk now.

  21. Fed Up says:

Ignorant people suck, without grant dollars funding some of the projects of the past we would be missing a lot of improvements. People of this area are usually happy to see their state and federal tax dollars improving their community in the way of grants. I guess you are saying that is not what you would like to see. Not so long ago, grant dollars funded buildings of apartment building for the elderly and low income, sanitary sewers installed where they were failing, etc. I guess you would rather have that whole burden on the city of Antigo taxpayer; I would not. I may not agree with what the grants are funding but I am not about to throw away the whole grant process because I disagree with one project.
