Has anyone seen the school lists nowadays? I just don’t see why we are supplying school supplies for the teachers as well. And to be so specific as to ask for Huggies wipes for a kindergartner. Just use soap and water and a rag to wipe them up. I know for a fact I didn’t need half that stuff when I attended school let alone a disposable camera too. Dry erase markers?, red pens for a 5th grader, since when do 5th graders use a red pen? Also I need to supply paper plates and boxes of kleenexes. If my kid luckily doesn’t get a cold all year shouldn’t I get my kleenexes back. These lists are ridiculous and are getting worse every year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
..

I tend to agree with you, fellow parent! It has gotten to be supplying the school with much-needed supplies rather than making sure our children are well-equipped for another school year.
I have to say that I would be perfectly fine with buying a box of disenfectant wipes for the class rather than having my child wiped with a soapy rag that has been used on someone else! YUCK! That is DISGUSTING! Aren’t these wipes less than $2? And Kleenex is only $1. I would gladly buy this to protect my children from getting sick. It’s bizarre to me that anyone would complain about this! Nothing mentioned above could be considered expensive. Your kids are worth every penny!
“Also I need to supply paper plates and boxes of kleenexes. If my kid luckily doesn’t get a cold all year shouldn’t I get my kleenexes back.”
You realize, of course, that the H1N1 virus spread has now been declared a PANDEMIC, and not just a mere epidemic. It’s time to teach your kids how and when to was their hands, and how to use the personal hand disinfectant gel you had damn well better be buying for them.
I can see not complaining if you have just one child left in school, as I do now, but what about a family with multiple children in the school district? $1 may not seem like much but remember where we are living and how much we are making living here.
I’m pretty sure that teachers don’t wipe off kids with ” a soapy rag that has been used on someone else.” I think that their intelligence is high enough that they could wash the child’s hands with soap & water, then dry them with paper towel. Huggies brand wipes are not a disinfectant. Kindergardeners should not be carrying around bottles of alcohol sanitizer. Good handwashing should be taught, at home first, but also in school. It is the #1 way to prevent sickness.
Just because a parent complained about the cost of school lists doesn’t make them a bad parent. They aren’t deliberately putting their child at risk just because they may not be able to afford some of the extras.I don’t consider paper plates and disposable cameras a safety hazard or a necessary teaching tool. Maybe these extra school supplies should be voluntary and more throughout the year. When the items go on sale, I’m sure more parents would be happier to help. I think many people just can’t afford an extra $5-$10
Give me a break! Complaining about $5-$10 extra dollars for your small child to have better, more convenient supplies. You probably are complaining about the school budget cuts too! Another person that wants all the service/supplies, and doesn’t want taxes to rise. How much is your cell phone bill a month? Think you could trim $5 dollars a month off that? Your cell phone is a convenience not a necessity. I hope your not a smoker, cause I know how long it would take to save $5.
robwatrp – AMEN!
I have five children in three different schools, elementary, middle school and also the high school. Its costing so much for me to get supplies for the kids each year. I try to buy the ones that are clearance out for next year but they never seem to need exactly what I get. Its all very frustrating. I’ve had to buy the wipes, tissues, specific color folders,, etc….. There are good sides and bad sides each year, cost always on the bad side. Thankfully my husband and I both work but we do know many families who are not or only have one person in a full time position. I heard this year the fill a backpack thing was out in ten minutes with many people not getting help?
How sad, isn’t it about time that the school district leaves it up to the parents what their children need to start school? Whatever happened to the simplicities of pencil and paper???
My child just started school this year and I for the most part support the supply list! I will as a parent do whatever I can to make my child’s school experience a plus! If you have a problem with the list try talking to the teachers or principal! FYI the camera is optional!
Too bad you all of you don’t have more time on your hands to stop complaining about hand wipes and take a look at the real waste in this town. The council, both city and school, tax rates that are through the roof like you would think we lived in New York, and how about those wonderfully educated decisions made with our tax money. Hey, if you don’t want disinfectants for your kids – then keep them home. Truth is – the cost of those rags you speak of as well as the soap comes out to more than the wipes. Focus on what really is a waste – not this. Also – notice my name, “I” don’t hide behind a call name. I have the balls to speak and let you know who I am.
The final thing for me was when I picked my daughter up from school at north, and her lip was huge and swollen and visibly split open. Her shirt was covered in blood. I asked what had happened and she told me a boy hit her in the face at recess and the teacher would only let her have two pieces of kleenex. She said she asked for more and the teacher told her to use her shirt.!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me!!! We are paying for supplies that the teachers use on a regular basis, and my child can’t use the ones I payed for when she needs them. And some teachers that are not even taking care of our kids while they are there. I don’t mind paying for supplies, but I expect those teachers do what they are supposed to. Oh by the way the school never even bothered to call me to let me know she had been hurt.
I went to North Elementary and have horror stories that haunt me to this very day. Teachers, Principle, and bullies made my life a living hell. I’m not sure what I did to deserve to be treated so bad. From the stories I hear from other parents, and past students that hell hole never changed. I’d run from North Elementary and run fast.
I never really complain about the school supply list. But I do get mad when my kids come home selling crap.. You teach kids to not talk to strangers but yet 7 and 9 year olds are suppose to be going door to door selling this crap. And for what? “Playground equipment”.. Same fundraiser for Playground Equipment the last 7 years and not one piece of playground equipment was bought. Most of the Soccer balls, baseballs, jump ropes, and baseball bats were donated by parents and businesses. Kids come home with an order form selling knick knacks, candies, and nuts at over inflated prices.. Many of the same items you can find at the dollar store.. Then its $5.00 for this, Soccer camp for $15.00, Book Fairs, pictures that are over priced.. Then they give you a mug, greeting cards, or a t shirt with your kid’s picture on it.. If you decide to keep it costs $20.00.. Then they make you feel guilty for taking it back.. Walgreens can do the same thing for half the price.
There’s a contest for which class in grade school can collect the most box tops.. Winning class gets to have a party, but the parents have to provide the stuff for the party.
