Here’s a story reported by The Wausau Daily Herald, posted on
the web HERE, and reproduced here as an instructional citation:
A 20-year-old man fled from officers after a traffic stop in a busy
neighborhood shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday, Wausau Police
Lt. Bill Kolb said.
Nikolas Simonson of Wausau was a passenger in a car that was
stopped by an officer because of a report of a reckless driver in
the area.
Simonson ran for a few blocks and hid inside a stranger’s house
in the 300 block of Chicago Avenue. Kolb said neighbors pointed
out the direction Simonson ran to officers. He was arrested on
charges of obstructing officers, criminal trespassing and a
probation hold.
Officers held Simonson on a violation of his probation because he
was intoxicated, Kolb said.
The driver of the vehicle, Alexander Drake, also was arrested on
charges of first-offense operating while intoxicated. Kolb said
Drake remained in the car during the incident.

Now, here’s the same story, in the style we have come to expect
from the Antigo Daily Journal:
Fleeing from law enforcement officers, Wausau law enforcement
official Police Lt. Bill Kolb said a 20-year-old man was intercepted
on foot and he was arrested in a busy neighborhood and reports
indicated the event occurred before 3 p.m. Saturday.
Being a passenger in a car, law enforcement officers stopped the
vehicle and there was a report suggesting there was a reckless
driver in the area.
Law enforcement officers filed reports indicating that neighbors
suggested where Simonson ran for a few blocks and he hid inside
a stranger’s house entering without the owner’s permission,
suggesting he was arrested for criminal trespass. Obstructing law
enforcement officers, Simonson was arrested on a probation hold
by a law enforcement officer and there were indications that he
was intoxicated.
Remaining in the car while also intoxicated, Kolb indicated the
driver was arrested and without attempting to flee from law
enforcement officers, he was not pursued.

That is pretty ridiculous. Point taken.
Wouldn’t it be easier if they just did copy and paste??

You mean, copy my above suggested made-up like-ADJ version and run it as an actual story in ADJ? Do you think regular readers would notice anything different from the usual ADJ fare? It might not be good enough. There’s no “It seems that…” or “It could have been worse…” or “mishap” or “entered a ditch…” or “highly unique…” references in my version. It’s hard for anyone who actually uses English for communication to emulate the ADJ style fully. It could have been worse, and it seems that their highly unique style suggests a linguistic mishap about to enter a grammatical ditch.
Albus, I suggest that you touch on the story recently published in the ADJ regarding missing teen, Kayla Berg. How misleading was that headline??? And how hurtful to her family and friends! The police aren’t any closer to finding Kayla and bringing her home than they were 30-some days ago. I’m sure with your clever wit and writing abilities, you could really put a spin on the insensitivity doled out by a small town newspaper.
I, too, was saddened by the tacky tone of the story, published on the web byh ADJ at http://www.antigodailyjournal.com/full.php?id=9093
Thanks for your confidence in my abilities, Sherry. However, the Kayla Berg case is too emotional, too heartbreaking, for me to treat with anything but the utmost care and concern. My thoughts and hopes for a positive outcome are with Kayla, her family, and her friends.
thank you albus
to Albus: I’m very new to Antigo Buzz, and I’m wondering how do you start a thread?? I’m very close with Kayla’s mom and I’m trying to help out as much as I possibly can right now. I’d like to start a thread about the benefit we are having for her on Sunday. Can you help me?
Good idea! All you should have to do is click on the main page for comments, opinons, etc…and there should be a link to click on which will take you to your email to contact Antigo Buzz!
wow, ok thanks sherry…………..
SpiritedInAntigo, just send an email to
admin at antigobuzz.com
and put “new blog” in the subject line. The content of your message will be the first posting for the new thread. Your email address will be kept private, not shown in the posting.
Note: Albus is NOT antigobuzz.com’s admin. I’m just a follower of and occasional participant in this site.
Kayla I hope you return to your family unharmed and just tired from your time away and to Kayla’s family and friends I hope you find the strength to hold on until she does…
However that being said is anyone EVER going to do something about the fact that alot of us rely on ADJ to relay the news accurately.. I dont think good ol’ Fred ever got the class on copy and paste because as sad as that is to run a news paper using the copy and paste method I have higher hopes for this town to someday see a news paper who can write a news story from scratch and have it be FACTUAL. Time to step it up ADJ, We the People Want More and Expect BETTER.
How about the fact that Freddy refuses to print any news on Kayla or her disappearance because he is convinced she is just a runaway…heard this from an insider at the Antigo Daily Journal. He wouldn’t even give the family a free ad for the reward benefit…how sad! Kudos to the Shoppers Guide for keeping the public updated on the status of this case from the family’s perspective.
Sherry, that’s too sad! Regarding ADJ reporting, I usually maintain the view that one shouldn’t ascribe malicious intent where simple stupidity would explain the situation. But I’m beginning to lose that charitable opinion. I once quit a newspaper job over a similar issue, storming out after a fight over an editorial policy that I thought endangered children by revealing too much personal (identifying) information about children in stories on the paper’s web site.
Children are the joy and obligation of the entire community. We are all responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for our young people. It’s a shame that Fred and his staff of alleged reporters persistently substitute business boosterism for community sensibility.
