It looks like the Antigo Daily Journal has admitted that it foisted on its readers an article plagiarized by chiropractor Stacy Bula. Well, almost admitted….
In the Family Primetime insert in the ADJ for June 2010, at the tail end of yet another unbelievable piece by Stacy Bula, there’s a little paragraph that reads, “The March 2010 familyprimetime chiropractic was written by Dr. Sue Brown from the www.icp4kids.com website.”
Well, gee. In the first place, that’s hardly news. I pointed out Sue Brown’s authorship of that piece in a blog here on Antigobuzz.com on March 4th. What took the ADJ so long to get the message?
In the second place, what kind of apology is that supposed to be? There’s no acknowledgment that Bula did the plagiarizing, no apology to Sue Brown for theft, no admission of copyright violation by the ADJ, no acceptance of responsibility, no expression of regret, no suggestion that a lesson has been learned, and no indication that any measures have been taken to prevent a repeat of the egregious behavior. It’s just an empty little notice that some unnamed article had a named author.
If I were Sue Brown, I’d still be pissed. Heck, I’m even NOT Sue Brown, and I’m pissed anyway!
Maybe Bula has actually learned a lesson. Her article in June Family Primetime, at least, was not plagiarized. It was absurd nonsense of course, but that’s what we’d expect from an article titled, “Chiropractic care may help with breast-feeding”.
Well, wait a minute. After much blathering irrelevancy and hokey “research” references, Bula actually did give some good advice. It’s in the second-last sentence of the article, which reads, “Moms should utilize health care professionals, midwives and lactation consultants and find out as much information about breast-feeding as they can.” Right. I agree. And NONE of those professionals are going to recommend that you take your precious newborn child to a chiropractor for bending and twisting treatment for breast-feeding problems.
Then there’s the corker. Bula’s last sentence, just before the incredibly lame reference to the previous plagiarism, reads (exactly and completely – I’ve got the article in my files to prove that I didn’t make this up or alter it in any way!), “Breast-feeding has a learning cure for both mom and baby and mothers should be next ashamed to ask for help.”
In my opinion, the Antigo Daily Journal should be next ashamed for printing such drivel.

Who is this “Albus” guy? Sounds like he has nothing better to do but put others down. I’m picturing this individual as an old man sitting on his porch yelling at the neighborhood kids for walking to close to his grass.
I personally know Stacy, and she’s about the nicest person anyone could meet. She would never intentionally plagiarize, and would walk an extra mile to help others out.
The world would be a better place with less people like Albus in it.
Hmmm…who is this guy “Albus”? As far as I am concerned, Albus is one of the good guys. I have been grateful for his insights. I appreciate his sense of fair play in pointing out plagiarized pieces appearing in the Antigo Daily Journal. I relish that he does his best to inspire people to think for themselves and that he offers links to scholarly articles and other references for those of us who wish to be well-informed. I respect his opinions in which he cites verifiable facts rather than unsubstantiated folklore or heresay.
Good for you that you personally know Stacy. Do you personally know that any time someone deliberately copies another person’s written work verbatum and submits it as their own, this is called plagiarism?
As for the world being a better place “with less people like Albus in it,” we once had a world with fewer enlightened, educated, stimulating thinkers in it. It was called the Dark Ages.
Perhaps the world would be a better place if people like “Don” would buy a vowel.
I agree, stealing someone else’s work is wrong and you’d have to be an idiot NOT to know that….shame on Stacy Bula and the Antigo Daily Journal.
Don, I’m not out simply to “put others down”. I am trying to protect my friends and neighbors from being shucked, jived, and scammed. If you have a better way to expose the slugs under a rock than by actually turning the rock over, let’s hear it.
Please note that I am not attacking Stacy Bula’s personality or personal merits, just her behavior. She can’t change who or what she is, but she can change what she does. That’s a basic rule of human behavior, interaction, and personal improvement. I do not question that Stacy Bula is a nice person with a charming smile, a warm and wonderful human being, a sometime high school gymnastics assistant coach, and a well-meaning person who would walk an extra mile to help others out. What I object to is her deliberate publication of someone else’s work as her own, and to the ADJ’s complicity in that act of plagiarism and copyright violation.
If you think unethical and illegal behaviors are acceptable and defensible, then you are part of the problem, not the solution. The world would be a much better place if people worked more on solving problems than on creating them.
“If you think unethical and illegal behaviors are acceptable and defensible, then you are part of the problem, not the solution. The world would be a much better place if people worked more on solving problems than on creating them.”
Albus, with all due respect. If this is what you believe, why don’t you take on some real issues instead of hounding a few local chiropractors referrencing someone elses written material?
Honestly, one doesn’t have to look very hard to discover serious issues out there. How about taking on the federal government for failing to secure our southern border, how about the massive, incredible debt our state and national government are hog tying us with. How about the stupid, senseless high speed train the governor wants to spend millions of tax payer dollars on, that no one is going to ride. How about the the Antigo school board cutting and whacking our schools and educators while they sit on hundreds of acres of land in Langlade county that could be sold and put back on the tax rolls? Does the school district really need several hundred acres of wooded land scattered around the county that offers no value from an educational standpoint? I could go on forever, but I think you get my point. It is obvious you have an ax to grind with chiropractic treatment, but give it up dude. Focus on real issues that face us in the eye everyday.
Tune into 55 am radio every morning from 5am to 11 am and get on board with the real issues and make a difference.
P.S., I noticed you didn’t deny being an old man sitting on his porch yelling at the neighborhood kids for walking to close to his grass.
Ben, the dynamics of solving problems in a democratic society starts with creating an awareness of the problem, and continues with persistent effort to sway public opinion to generate support for action. Limitations on time and resources means you can’t deal with everything that needs attention. You have your pet issues, I have mine. Some may overlap, and some may be directly oppositional. In the case of “Albus” versus “Ben Drinken”, I suspect “directly confrontational” is a better description for our positions on political and social issues, with some possible minor overlap of agreement on economic views.
I believe in setting state, focusing on the adjustments I can cause that will establish conditions favorable to the resolution of issues I can personally affect, rather than setting goals, which I view as a rather useless expenditure of wishful thinking with little understanding of what to do next. There is a better likelihood that I can raise awareness and cause adjustment of opinion and attitude on local chiropractic quackery than there is that the governor will listen to my opinion on high speed trains. You fight a war by picking the battles you can win.
That old man sitting on his porch, yelling at the neighborhood kids for walking close to his grass, is doing his part, too. It takes a whole village to raise a child, and that old man is helping those kids develop a sense of social responsibility and respect for the rights of others. Tune in to 90.9 FM radio every morning from 4 to 9 and get some actual reporting on issues so you can make up your own mind instead getting your opinions pre-packaged.
Albus, I actually believe we were cut from the same cloth. I agree with about 99% of what you have to say. (90.9 FM is pre-programmed right next to 55 AM on my truck). I make my routine financial donation to Wisconsin Public Radio as I’m sure you do. I am not attempting to be confrontational with you. I see a bright, informed and educated individual in your posts. I agree with your belief that we should pick battles we can win, my point is, a gentleman with your knowledge should easliy be able to tackle issues far more important than plagiarism by a few chiro’s in town. (You won’t get any arguments out of me regarding chiropractic treatment). I guess my point is you appear a little obsessive/compulsive with the topic and could easily catch bigger fish in the sea. I encourage you to take on and tackle bigger issues in our little community. I would also be interested in meeting you sometime. I believe I know who you are and we actually have hit it off very well together. Who knows, maybe together we could solve the worlds problems !
Did you drive a black General Motors station wagon in the mid to late 1970′s?
I wasn’t here in 70′s. But it’s good to know there may be some kindred spirit out there….
I’m not really obsessive/compulsive on the issue of chiropractic quackery. There are other issues and causes that attract my energy and resources as well, but those find outlet on venues other than AntigoBuzz. As a rational skeptic, I find hot-button issues everywhere I look. Big Tobacco offends me deeply, and homeopathy inspires my most creative flights of vitriol.
I’ve been poking at chiropractors all over the internet for many years, and will continue to expose their quasi-religious lunacy any time I get the chance. It’s a bit like a game of Whack-a-Mole, I know. However, the chiro-mafia in Antigo is particularly obnoxious, and the Scott Tatro story should be a call to arms for any thinking, caring person.
Are there bigger fish in the sea? Perhaps there are, but I’m not in a position to pursue everything that swims by. You’ve got some ideas on local battles that deserve some ammunition, I’m sure. Start a topic or two with some facts and rational kindling, and perhaps I’ll fan the flames for you.
