The Closing of Zingale’s New Village Inn

First of all I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the patrons of Zingale’s New Village Inn. I am sure there are many questions that are running through your mind especially with the taboo that is affiliated to that location and all the other failed businesses that have come and gone. Let me take this time to explain to you why this profitable business had to close its doors.

First things first, I should probably explain my affiliation and background briefly. My name is Doug Theisen, and over the last 23 years have been extensively trained, in every job affiliated with in the hospitality industry, from doing dishes and prep-cook, running kitchens, multiple styles of service as a waiter, running restaurants, catering, sales, Food and Beverage Director, and finally consulting. My cliental list has been just as diverse from U.S. President George Bush Sr. and Jr., Presidential Candidates, Politicians, National Professional sports teams, Movie and TV stars, many Fortune 500 companies, Oil Barrens, and many very famous Billionaires that I cant mention, but can say one has his own TV show. I have started in local business here in this town such as Leffel’s and I am very sorry to hear about the doors closing and the loss of this landmark. My training has started from the origins of Antigo’s finest eateries to the 5+ star, 5+ diamond facilities across the United States. I have a proven track record for any business in which I have worked, increasing revenues to the point of tripling there revenues from the time I arrived, and decreasing expenses, while streamlining their business in order to give it an outstanding track record just like Leffel’s. Joe and Teresa Zingale were introduced to me through a mutual acquaintance and I was brought on board as a consultant, and decided to remain on board as one of the cooks.

The landlord to this facility is Bruce Biere, while the business owners were Joe and Teresa Zingale. Prior to me coming on board there were verbal promises that were made by both parties, which were explained to me when I joined the team. There was no formal contract just both parties words to each other about working towards and the development of this restaurant. As the weeks passed and we got closer to the opening, promises that were made by Bruce Biere were beginning to be very empty, In my opinion I could see a change that wasn’t good. Bruce was trying to become not just the landlord like they originally agreed but to be in control and make decisions that were not his to make. He dragged his feet on providing a contract until after the doors were open. The contract once again in my opinion was a very piss pour of an excuse for a contract, that was designed to really rake who ever would sign it over the coals, which I wouldn’t let them sign unless it was changed and overlooked by a lawyer. Bruce’s conduct towards the staff and Joe and Teresa was just becoming inexcusable. It was also Bruce Biere’s financial responsibility to have the facility cleaned up and ready for take over and operate so he was to pay the employees doing this until the day the doors opened up. A fellow employee and myself still have yet to collect the money owed to us which totals in the thousands. While spending time with Bruce listening to him and watching his conduct, I became convinced that he wanted the business for himself. It soon came to pass that my hunch was correct. This snake in the grass finally came out, he knew when the contract would be coming back from the Lawyers office, and the day before it came back, he refused to make good on any of the verbal agreements that he had made in the beginning to Joe and Teresa took advantage of them and wanted them out of the building and had the audacity to ask me to run this restaurant for him. He could not make a business go here in town on his own and needed someone to do it for him, Joe and Teresa relocated back to Antigo, to attend personal family matters and be close to help. This struck an all to familiar cord for me, after the passing of my father I also relocated to Antigo to assist my mother in any way that I could. Bruce found it as an opportunity to make an established business and then take control of it riding on their name and reputation to keep it going. It has been stated to me by Bruce that he is waiting for them to get out so that he can open it back up in less than a week after they are out. Bruce will try to open it up I have no idea who this man would be able to get to work for him. I am sure by writing this little blog I can wave goodbye to the thousands of dollars he owes me, but my father Tom Theisen taught me money comes and goes, and had to explain to me the virtue of right and wrong even though it came at the price of a sore hinder. There is a time to stand up for what is right, no matter what the cost. I have told many stories with tremendous pride of my home town, and its many endearing qualities being a boy growing up here. This situation is a travesty of injustice by an outsider who has come here to prey on this small town, attempting to swindle members of this town out of money for this restaurant that isn’t even his. So as a warning to all Bruce Biere a man of empty promises, who doesn’t pay his bills, and will take candy from a baby, is the real reason Zingale’s New Village Inn was closed so he could have this profitable business for himself. So no business will succeed at that location or any other location as long as this man is affiliated with it.

We have tried to make this restaurant blossom, Joe, Teresa, and all the staff have worked very hard to give this town something special with this restaurant, and in my travels and the many places I have assisted over the years, this team is one of the finest teams I have ever seen put together and it has been an honor and privilege to work beside each and every one of you, I am very proud to say I was part of this team.

Doug Theisen

    This reminds me of the Dallas Cowboys, as long as the owner is still there then it won’t matter who that team hires for a coach it will always be a loser. Well this building is the same way.

  3. IOweAlot says:

    Well said Moving Forward. Very well said- I concur!

  4. Foxnewsisforidiots says:

    I don’t know why the Mexican restaurant that was at that location closed. I heard it was lanlord related. The rent was jacked up. Something like that. But I also heard that the land lord was the guy who owns the old radar base. I can’t think of his name. But I will say that their food was excellent. I ate there about once a week and was sad to see them go. What a shame. There aren’t a lot of “good retaurants” around town. I guess it doesn’t matter because Scott Walker wants me and a lot of other public employees to have less disposable income to spend at local businesses. So I won’t be going out to eat so much anymore anyways.

  7. LibationLarry says:

    The application for the liquor license was in the ADJ. “Paul” never answered back but I heard this weekend that he and that slime landlord Bruce Beiri go way back. All I can say is: Birds of a feather… What a joke.

  8. curious george says:

    I see they got the liquor lic, and changed the sign to opening soon.So maybe we’ll get to see what happens.Hope they do I miss their food.

  9. Kathy says:

    BEWARE…I was @ the Checkpoint when they had it. This Guy has NO personality and the food is extremely average. The Guy that owns the building is a PIG and he will make money off of this place and be there- drunk all the time. YUCK!!!! Go across the street and spend your money with nice good people! I give the new place 3 months Max.

  10. Bob2 says:

    If you know anything about Paul & Kathy & their ridiculous business ideas, surely you would agree that their 3rd, 4th or is it 5th? bar business will not make it. He screwed Jeanne & Pat Theide (owners checkpoint) out of months worth of rent… ran the utility bills into the $1,000s & up & left… leaving the place a pigsty. & as someone stated earlier, more sleds rode by then stopped when they were there. Pizza was wayyy overrated.
    What goes around comes around. 2 crooks in business 2gether, I predict… 2 months tops!

  11. ddddd says:

    Drove by the other day and it says:
    DAYZ GONE BY
    Opening Soon.

    I sincerely hope the new owners have more luck than the last ones! I’ll definitely go for dinner as soon as they open.

    Foxnewsisforidiots: I miss that Mexican restaurant all the time! That place was fantastic and the people were so nice. El Tequila is good, but that old place was amazing! The guys who ran it moved back to Chicago. I also heard it was something to do with a contract dispute with the former owner who owns the radar base. His wife opened a restaurant there as soon as the Mexican one closed. It was called “Weekends” I think. It wasn’t there very long and then the building was sold to Bruce Bieri.

  12. antigoman says:

    After reading on this site for a while I have come to this. Bruce if a place is zoned as a commercial property, setting up a residence in a COMMERCIAL ZONED BUILDING is illegal. Yes it is illegal even if it is “your property.” Paul, you may have your landlord tenant situation “well in hand,” but I can guarantee it’s not going to last long. As far as Bruce having things stolen from him: my understanding is he (Bruce) was moving stuff out of the basement while very intoxicated well before noon I might add. So, I’m guessing you were a little too buzzed to remember what you moved, or where you even put it.

  13. Kathy says:

    This whole thing has a ton of Creepiness all over it. Two men who have long time ties share bizzare business ideas and intend on unleashing them on “The Dumb Antigo Buzzards ppand Local Hicks”….See previous posts. Bieri has no respect for the people of Antigo. Especially considering he is known for putting down what he views as “toothless,fat,white trash”. Have you ever seen Bieri in action? Not pretty folks yet strangely entertaining….This should be quite a sight….

    Yes i believe the only use variences are with the bars downtown but highly doubt Beer eze has one

    I am responding to some of the comments that was said about Dayz Gone By (old Check Point). I have been a customer for a long time and I have to say I am totally discussed with Pat and Jean and another woman there. These people totaly make me sick. They call Paul and Kathy crooks, maybe they should look in the mirror before casting stones. Pat and Jean had Gary run the business and butted in to where he couldnt make a go of it then they get Paul and Kathy to run it and they tell him how they should run it and who they should work there. Lies were spread that werent true. Im really disappointed in the people that listen to what certain people say. I though people were more adult to find out for yourself what Paul and Kathy were like instead of listening to people who are only out to destory othe peoples reputation. I would go into Dayz Gone By because I like what they did to the place and the friendliness of the place. I like all the employees EXCEPT for the ‘other woman’. She comes across thinking shes better then anyone else. All Paul and Kathy want is to earn a living like anyone else. I also bEg to different, Dayze Gone By had great food I would eat there any time. If you see Dayze Gone By opening up in town somewhere, I hope people will have a mind of their only and not let people put ideas into your head that Paul and Kathy are bad people because they arent. So people when you see them stop and see them and talk to them yourself and get to know them and form your only opinon and not go on someone elses words. To Pat and Jean and the other woman, looked in the mirror cause you people , I know were not honest. I really dont know how you can sleep at night or to even look at your self in the mirror when you get up in the morning. And you know the other person was right WHAT GOES AROUND WILL COME AROUND!!!!!! {edited by request}

  16. Well who ever is Fed Up! good for you. It is time you guys find out what these people are really like. I used to ride out to Days Gone By, and I can hardly remember a time when it was not busy. I love there burgers, and there pizza was really good. I see the sign at the old Beereze states Opening Soon! I can hardly wait! I also know the ‘other woman’, and I agree with you Fed Up. She should not cast stones, she really thinks she is something else, and she always has. She knows what people say about her, and most of it is true, and as for Pat and Jean Thiede, we all know what a peice of work they are. They screwed Gary over, and Kathy and Paul as well, and the other woman got the short end too, from what I understand. Lets give them a chance like Fed Up says. You will see me there, and I hope to see you guys there too! {edited by request}

  17. curious george says:

    It sounds strange to me,on this subject everyone makes claims to a building owner yet want to punish a leaser for the owners actions.As for Bob2′s claims I happen to know utility bills go with a name not a location,so pat and jean have only their own bills to reckon with.Dayz owners bills will follow them. As I stated before I have had the food at dayz and met the owners and most employees.I found most of them nice people and look forward to seeing them again.Sounds like you have a personal issue,could it be you are the ‘other woman’ as fore mentioned? {edited by request}

  18. For the record, the property can have living quarters as long as it meets all the necessary building codes, to include fire codes. The requirments can be met but they are very clear as to what is acceptable, and what is not. So make along sotry short if the building can have living quarters as a commercialporperty as long as the build meets the codes.

  19. conern paitrent says:

    If Paul and kathy know anything about running a business Im sure he probabley took steps to make sure Bruce does not interferr with the business. After all when some one leases a place they have no right with any of the disession on how to do their business. Unlike Jean and Pat. When I would go in and eat after words I would sit at the bar. I would over here things, but I dont always believe what i here. As time when on I sat with Paul and he showed me some of the texts he received for Jeannie, and that showed me that Pat and Jean arent that innecint. People or saying poor them, but they didnt have to move, they could of run the place themselves. The only thing is all the times I was going into Check Point their business was going down hill bad. People who spreads rumors with out backing it up, I really feel sad for them. Because if thats all they have to do with there life is gossipp and spread rumors, they must live a awful dull life and your missing alot in life. But I guess some people gets their fix and joy out of life but slandering other peoples name. They have a miserable life so there going to make other peoples lives miserable to. To bad for them. To me Jean and Pat couldnt make a go of Check Point (because it was going down hill) they didnt want anybody else to scuecced either. All I have to say is people who have nothing better to do, GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    is this not just a bit out of line, is everyone just want to be mean to each other? my family has been doing business in this town for about 65 years, and it is not easy. we have all made mistakes, and done things we wish we had not. i have met bruce several times, i know russ meyer who helped with the mortgage, and i think they are just trying to get it right. i have not met paul and kathy, but the checkpoint was left in poor condition, i saw it, cleaned it, fixed it, and worked it. i do believe pat and jeanne were not treated fairly and that they were taken advantage of. and please do not get down on the other woman, she invested time and money to get it rolling, she is a very nice woman, smart and works hard. i hope that paul and kathy do very well in a location that has never for some reason been able to sustain in the long term, and this is not just recently, maybe jerry tesch and bob stimac are the only two who ever made money there, but i did not see the financials, so i do not know.
    please, enough of this, forgive and forget, and wish everyone involved in this new venture good luck, profitablity, health and happiness. business is tough, i know, expenses are high, and it is a constant stuggle. life is very short, tomorrow is not a promise, and everyone needs to respect and be kind to each other. craig cigel {edited by request}

    Well said Craig Cigel!

  22. Love the Buzz says:

    Re:Craig Cigel

    I enjoyed reading your entry-just wanted to comment on the restaurant in question. I’m sure Jerry Tesch and Bob Stimac did quite well financially when they owned the building. However, let’s not forget the people who ran the Mexican restaurant. The had a great business and served great food. Yet they did not own the building and got the shaft from their landlord Mr. Corn Seller.
    Next comes the Zingales. Their restaurant held great potential! The food was excellent as well as the service. Joe and Teresa went out of their way to make their customers feel welcome. Then they got the shaft from their landlord Bruce Bieri. I found out about this from my favorite blog, Antigo Buzz.

    Craig, there may be a few people who do not like Paul and Kathy, but they will not make nor break their business. But Bruce Biere can and will!!! I’ve seen this man in action. He is a small man with a big moustache and a filthy mouth.
    He is a racist and a drunk. He refers to the people of Antigo as rednecks and hillbillies.

    My husband and I were in a local bar one late afternoon last summer and drunken Bruce was there also. A young couple walked in. The lady was quite pretty, blonde and tanned. Right away drunken Bruce turns to the male companion he was with and commented on the lady’s big endowment. He did not use the word endowed. So draw your own conclusion on the word (words) he used. I heard him, and it was evident the couple heard him because they put their drinks down and walked out. Now we know this couple were not hillbillies because if they had been, Mr. Bieri would have awakened, finding himself in the E.R.

    I do not know Paul and Kathy, nor have I ever eaten at Check Point. I was so happy when I heard they were
    opening this restaurant. I heard they had bought the building, now I think Bruce Bieri is still owner. I notice that Paul never answered Libation Larry’s question regarding Bruce’s involvement.
    I do wish both Paul and Kathy much success in their new venture, however I could never in all good consciousness
    patronize an establishment of which Bruce Bieri could realize a financial gain- and he most certainly will.

  23. David says:

    Kudos to you Love the Buzz! My thoughts exactly.

  24. to whom it may concern says:

    nobody said the ‘other woman’ wasnt professionaly. She is ok UNITL you get her mad and she doesnt get what she wants. Then she will stab you in the back. She is a spoiled brat who thinks she should get what she wants when she wants it. I know that for a FACT. If you dont know Paul and Kathy then keep your month shut and dont judge people you have never met. But the goes back to what Fed Up said and alot of others some people just cant think for themselves. There like some kids where people have to think for them. Some thrird grades are smarter then that. {edited by request}

  25. Ben Drinkin says:

    That Beiri building is the gift that keeps on giving for Tammy at Antigo Sign Co. Every time a new renter calls Antigo Sign they don’t even need to mention the dimensions of the sign out front, Tammy knows them by heart, no joke.

  26. Dear the Antigo Buzz,

    I met Paul today he was at the bar and he was very nice. He welcomed me inside and showed me around. We talked and he told and showed me what has happened to him and his wife in since last June. To go into detail would not be up to me, but please I incourage anyone that wants to know the truth to please feel free to talk with Paul and Kathy. I for one can not wait till it opens. What they have planed will be alot of fun. So please everyone lets give them a chance, you never know we may love the place.

    I asked him about the landlord situation and he told me that Bruce is not involved in anyway in this business.

  27. Love the Buzz says:

    To life is too short!

    Paul told you that Bruce is not involved in anyway in this business. Then WHO in fact owns the building, and who will be collecting the rent?

  28. jb says:

    For all of you who believe all these stories and want the facts on this whole situation, just check the Wisconsin Court Access on the characters. Bruce Beiri is in forclosure with place, and numerous problems with the law. Paul has so many judgements, I really do not understand how he could open a lemonade stand. The ‘other woman’ is in foreclosure, judgements, and a third divorce. This is all just a waste of time, and total Antigo, stick with the facts! {edited by request}

  29. Bob2 says:

    JB – she FILED for divorce 3 X from the same person. Now she finally got smart enough to go through with it! The only reason she has a foreclosure pending is because her name is still on the home that she walked away from over 2 years ago, leaving it to the ex. Talk about “stick with facts”… you should learn them.

  30. David says:

    The whole point here folks is:

    Bieri, despite foreclosure, is still somehow able to lease this property to yet another new tenant. Yes, Bruce is back.

    Fact: Bieri is classless and shady.
    Fact: The new tenant and Bieri are originally from the same area and have asscociated for years. (Ask Paul)
    Fact: Both parties have had less-than-reputable business practices.
    Question: Will they finally make it?

    The obvious answer is: Only time will tell.

    Personally, I will opt to go elsewhere- too much tasteless baggage here for me.

  31. To love the Buzz, the rent is being collected by a third party and is working as the go between for the contract.

    Paul and Kathy hurry up and get open so these people can see what they have been missing.

    I have to send and appoligy to the ‘other woman’, I am sorry I said anything in refernce to you, I was out of line. You are going through a rough time right now and for that I am truely sorry. I wish you the bext of luck.

    See people it is not the postion of this web page to bash people it was ment as informational, and who ever runs this site should set the standards higher so some of this stuff would never get published, much like a newspaper does! Just something to think about. {edited by request}

  32. one last comment. To Craig, I read your statement and well writen. I am not aware of the condition of the place, nor does is matter. I am not concerned about the from what I understand the former owers of Check Point as I heard it went back to the bank. The thing here simple put is and should be the concern of the citizens of Antigo as well as those on the buzz that it is up to us to welcome new business in order to make this community survive, there are so many people out of work that could use a good job, and having new business in town well offer people jobs. So as you have lets all of us wish them the best of luck and suppot them getting the place open, as we see more business places closing.

  33. Paul says:

    Well 2 am and I see my new friend was just on taking about me, Thank you Life! Larry sorry I didnot get bakc to you as I have been busy. I read some of the buzz the other day as did my wife, and I watched her dry over what was writen. Please I am asking from my heart, why is it necessary for people to say these things about people they do not even know? We have been through in 10 months more than most of you have been through in your life time. I am not about to go throught he entire laundry list, I have a bit more class than that. But I am asking please, my wife is an amazing woman, and I can be a real jerk when I want to be or when provoked, but Kat is always kind and real, she does not put on a face like I have seen others do for there customers, what you see with her is what you get. She has an amazing heart and cares about everyone around her. That is what drew me to her. Please do not hurt her she has done nothing wrong.

    Larry sorry I got off subject. The contract for the record is setup so that Bruce has no control over the business at all. The one thing you must know, and I hope that you do not mind me stating th truth, but the issues where Bruce seems to be the one everyone is blaming, lets clear the record, he funded several tenants to get them started in this building. So this is why he was involved.

    We are working to get this place open soon, but good things take time to make, you do not ruch a good meal, and this is no different. We hope that everyone will enjoy the place. We are open to ideas, so please come in fill out a comment card, tell us twhat you think, and what you would like to see.

    Hope to meet all of oyu on the buzz, Take care! I will be publishing specials and events on here from time to time, so come and join us for a great time.

    Sincerely
    Paul
    Day’z Gone By.

  34. David says:

    Wow…it’s true. Really real!
    Some people just don’t get it and never will.
    Either an establishment is Seedy or is on the Up and Up.
    Why do people feel the urge to patronize questionable establishments? Dayz Gone By may very well do “ok”.
    However, from the tone of this blog the clinentele is surely going to be a coarse, undiscriminating one. Too bad, yet par for the course.

  35. Bob2 says:

    TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO flippin funny! I’m joining Kathy from the neighbors place:) I guess we’ll see what happens!

  36. Bob2 says:

    Good God people, find something else to do! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES FOR BLAH BLAH BLAHING~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. Bob2 says:

    oh! LOVE YOU DAVID! (Sorry couldnt help but engage!) lol~

  38. David says:

    No problem Bob2…That’s how I Roll Bro. See ya across the street!…

  39. Doug Theisen says:

    Paul I don’t know you or your wife, for your sake I hope that you had a lawyer look at the contract and that both parties have signed it, I would recommend that you dont step foot in the door or spend dollar one to make changes in the place until it is. Even if it is stated in the contract I think you might have a hard time keeping him out or not involved. When i left the restaurant for the last time the clean up would take only 4 hours for 1 person to do. The equipment if its the same stuff, all of it has been torn apart by me and deep cleaned. It shouldnt take long to get it up and runnin. I would encourage you to use extreme caution with Bruice, last time i was home the deck he was wanting to get built still wasnt done which tells me he didnt pay the guys that were working on it. As far as me i got a print of John Wayne in exchange of pay that he had no intention of paying $2100.00 for a John Wayne print. I give everyone the chance to prove themselves, regardless of what i hear. I wish you well and be careful.

  40. Kathy says:

    That was very kind of you Doug. In addition to being a terrific chef and businessman, you’re a very good person. Papa would be proud! We will miss you- God Bless Sweetie: )

  41. moving forward says:

    Mr. Theisen is a very stand up character, always has been and always will be. I wish him the best of luck wherever he goes.

  42. IOAlot says:

    Zingale’s were open for such a short time but worked so hard to get there. Doug and company did such a nice job in the kitchen and Joe was great in the front. Nice families involved there. Great music and atmosphere. What a shame. I wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

  43. jb says:

    Hearing Paul has left town and is not doing his “club” now, he is no where to be found. And for Lifestooshort, you hit it on the ‘other woman’, she is a spoiled bratt, and when she don’t get what she wants, she gets mad, you hit it right on! Maybe she would be a good one to hook up with Bruce, seems like that would be a good pair! At least they are both big drinkers with tons of issues! {edited by request}

  44. Kathy says:

    Surprise, surprise…

  45. Paul says:

    the place is not going to open by us as we were filled with empty promises once again so my wife and I had to move back to our house. We have to try to rebuild our lives. We will miss the wonderful friends we made there and will miss the opportunity to meet more new friends. So best of luck to you all and take care. I will check innow and then as we loved the area and wanted so much to be a part of the community and to bring in some much needed jobs as well. As for those who worked for us they will tell you the truth, with the exception of one who got fired becasue of an attitude problem. So we will visit now and then as money allows, but opening that bar is not going to happen unless we get a miracle. Thank you and God Bless you all.

    Paul and Kat!

  46. Kathy says:

    So, how many people has Beiri screwed over now? Is he still in foreclosure? What a Scumbag!!!

  47. Doug Theisen says:

    I’m sorry it didnt work out and I can read between the lines. Best of luck to you Paul on your future endevours. I for one do appreciate what you tried to do and thank you for trying

  48. Bob2 says:

    HA HA… So who wins the bet at Not Bobs?! 2 funny!

  49. Love the Buzz says:

    I drove past the old Village Inn today and saw a few cars there. The sign was advertising for help wanted. Does anyone know who is opening the restaurant? Maybe Paul got his miracle. It would be a miracle to me if anyone opens it.
