Lack of Meaning Behind Antigo Handshakes

Your “word” from business contractor/owners…means buttkiss….
Recently I have been reading the blogs from the Fuddfest and Del Nicholson….Bruce Biere….and other business people who are trying very hard to pull their money around and act as if they are above the law…..

The fact remains….and this is my opinion, is that these people just do not have any morals…or conscience.

Now…with that being said, I just want to hit on a few other businesses that have also given their “word” to do things off from a contract.

This small town of Antigo is crawling with small businesses…..some, and very few of them are honest and do keep their word when spoken. Others however, have given their “word” and have lied, cheated and actually found attorney’s to represent the crooked business practices they were involved in.

A construction business is Antigo did the very same thing with their “word”…..Dave Nicholson construction, which is no longer in business….because he sold the business to his son Clint…..who is now DNCI. Many people who have hired them also got the “word” that they would fix and repair and make good on what they screwed up on……but when the ink was still wet on the sale of the business….Clint decided he did not have to keep his “word” to any wrong doing and bad workmanship he and his father did, and hired an attorney to hide behind her skirt to protect him.

So MANY people now have to endure the expense of hiring another contractor to repair the bad job they did.

So my advice to anyone……get EVERYTHING in writing and do not go on the “word” of a contractor, a landlord, a plumber, or any other such people.

It is very disheartening that this small town can not live by honesty, and their word anymore……as it hurts the small business owners who do do business with honesty.
In the long run, what comes around goes around…..and God will prevail and punish them accordingly.

I pray that these businesses get their just rewards……and I pray that the honest business owner thrives from that honesty.

To Joe and Teresa……please do not give up on your dream of the restaurant……you truly deserve success.

To DNCI…..and all the other dishonest, untrustworthy people, God will forgive you of your personality and business faults…but the people you threw under the bus with not soon forget…..and neither will this town.

***************UPDATE 09/01/2010***********

Pics now available (see below)……
In this blog….people are saying the homeowner should show proof of BAD workmanship…..attached is some photos of a frostwall done by Dave Nicholson Construction….now known as DNCI…..
We paid $5500 for a frostwall so our breezeway would not heave….or have the cement crack…..Dave Nicholson Construction PROMISED to take care of the problem after the cement heaved over and inch and we had water coming into the breezeway….their claim was that they had the exterior wall on the frostwall…and that it was our fault somehow because we did not hire a general contractor…..which by the way they said they did not need because they were professionals and they did not need a “babysitter”….so….we..like fools trusted them that they would do a professional job……even after Clint bought out his father….and now is DNCI…he PROMISED to take care of the problem…..his idea of “taking care of” was to hide behind his attorney’s skirt…..
These pics show without a doubt that not only did not meet the frostwall with the garage…but they also show that the exterior wall was not built on the frost wall…..furthermore….the $5500.00 we paid was mostly for them to stuff tar paper three feet from the wall to the garage to meet the end…….
We went to attorney’s…..and we tried to file a claim…but Clint cried like a baby behind his attorney….and claimed he did not have to fix the problem because he was not responsible for the previous owner’ (his daddy) work….well…CLINT…you put the wall in…and YOU dug the wall….and YOU were there to build the exterior wall…..
So….DO NOT CONTRACT IDIOTS……(DNCI)…you picked a great name for yourself….
So…in closing…..just wanted everyone to know that the “good word” of DNCI……does not hold true…….
We have hired a REAL contractor who will do the job right…..instead of “just shove tar paper in….they’ll never know”
This my friend is fact…..and you can cry and run to your skirted attorney…..and this is NOT slander….this is fact….the proof is in the pics……you were WRONG…and you will be known out for your BAD workmanship…..and your BAD “WORD”.
If anyone needs tar paper…we have three feet of stuffed tar paper……probably enough to tar paper half a garage…..let me know….free for the taking. Or maybe Clint would like it back so he can use it on his next screw job?

Yeah…..well said….ad it’s about time someone calls out thse crooked bastards……the came and quoted me for a job…..they came in reasonably fair…..so I hired them…..they came….re roofed my house…..and put up a garage…..guess wha….three years later…my shingles are coming off…and my garage leaks so bad it is like ariver when it rains…..for two years I have been askig, begging and down right crying for thm to fix it……..
Ii finally gave up on their “word” and hired somone to comeand redo it…..Carl from Birnamwood is fantastic………and HE stands behind his word. He is an honest guy.
DO NOT TRUST DNCI or any Nicholson for that matter.

  2. Albus says:

How about we build a “Buzz List” of reputable Antigo business people? Anyone can nominate someone for the list, and AntigoBuzz provides a follow-up interview with the nomonee (to make sure Bruce is not nominating himself), and we keep an active list of “business people you can trust”. Folks could provide ratings for their dealings with Buzz-Approved businesses. Kind of like the threads dealing with Zingale’s New Village Inn, Night Moves, Antigo Daily Journal, members of the Antigo chiro-mafia, etc…..

  3. moving forward says:

As a business man as well and not to defend anyone but I do have to say that we get stiffed my homeowners just as much as the other way around. I would write a contract up doing work for my own relatives over a handshake anyday. Not for honesty but to clarify in writing what is to be done and for how much. Misunderstandings happen every day. Handshakes work great if I mow your lawn and you trim my tree in return but not so much for business deals.

  4. ddddd says:

YES PLEASE!!! A “Business Buzz List” is a great idea! I’ve had so many problems with dishonest contractors in the Antigo area and would love to share my experiences so that no one else has to waste the time and money I have. Of course, I also have great recommendations to make and would love to share them as well.

  5. Innocent Bystander says:

A good theory, but it seems way too easy to use it as another witch hunt. Nothing I have read here would lead me to believe that something of that nature would be used for anything other than what this blog is used for…a way to crucify people based on whether someone likes them rather than their performance on a particular job. If there was some way to regulate that, with honest stories based on provable fact rather than just gossip, heresay and finger-pointing it would be a great service. Let’s see if contributors can behave as adults and actually submit situations that they have themselves have experienced and are willing to sign their name on. Otherwise it’s just more of what we read here. I would love to see this town support the money that is actually spent and earned in this town, rather than just thrown around by the selfish wealthy serving their own greedy needs.

  6. Ben Drinken says:

So anyone can just post a story on this web site without even identifying themselves? The author of this post gets to remain anonymous? Is this post by the administrator of the web site? Is this post by someone who hired a contractor to do some work and after the work was performed, decided he didn’t want to pay for services rendered, so he bad mouths the contractor to get out of paying?
Did the author of this post file a small claims case or hire a lawyer regarding his complaint? I’ll bet he didn’t because this same story has been posted about DNCI on Craigslist rants & raves for months and months now. If the poster had a legitimate complaint, he should have had it resolved legally by now. Posting anonymous stories like this isn’t worth the time it took to type it. Anyone can say whatever they want without offering a shred of proof. Posts like this should be deleted by the administrator unless the author grows a pair and identifies him/herself and offers at least a semblance of evidence or proof, even if using an anonymous handle. Basic journalism 101.

  7. Hey Ben..... says:

Just to get your story straight……let me tell you something…….legally….if a family member sells the company to another famiy member…or anyone else…..the new “owner” is not responsible for for what the previous owner promised……
Now…IF the new owner was the son…or daughter….and also made promises to the homeowner…he in all conscience should keep the promises……however he or she is not obligated because of the liabilty issue from previus owner.
That being said…..if the contractor is local…as DNCI is…..I would think they would they would want to maintain their local reputation by keeping their word.
I have seen the posts in Craig’s List as well….and maybe you did not see them….but the homeowner did post pictures of the poor quality of work done…..unfortunately….someone must have had a very guilty conscience to flag the Craig’s List poster……I am sure……when all the homeowners get the word that this buzz is out here…they too will want
to post pics and stories of the very bad workmanship of DNCI……they may be ocal…and they may have been in business for over 30 years….but they really suck at keeping their word.
By the way…my name is Ted Wagner.

  8. Ben Drinken says:

I checked out the “Wisconsin Circuit Court” website. I typed in Dave Nicholson, Clint Nicholson, and DNCI under the business section. Guess what. Not one single legal action against any one of the three identities, not one, zip, zero, nada. I can tell you there are plenty of “reputable” businesses that have claims filed against them. So obviously the poster NEVER even filed a legal claim. If the work was so bad, and he didn’t get satisfactory results, stop at the court house and file a legal complaint. My point is, it is tough enough for any business owner in this town to keep his head above water even without mental midgets spreading false rumor. If the poster thought he had an honest complaint with even half a change of winning judgement, he would have filed a claim instead of posting several months of anonymous posts on Craigslist. I’m not related to DNCI or even friends with them, but I did hire them to do a job for me a year ago, and they did everything they were expected to do at the price they quoted. If the three names I mentioned above have ZERO legal claims filed against them on Wisconsin Circuit Court website, including the disgruntled anonymous poster, my bet is the poster is the dishonest one here.

  9. anononmous says:

What is wrong with you people? For one this Antigo Buzz is a crock of horsesh!t! You are trying to bring down people who try to make a living in this run down town! DNCI never had work done from them but im sure they are carrying insurance not like all these other fly by nighters who live out of the city and undercut the contractors who do live here! This is heresay what about our city inspector( jerry wilhelm)! I work for a contractor in antigo and i have once in my 16 years of working in this town have i seen him come on to a job! Oh ive seen him drive by so he can go back and sit in his office to see if anyone has a building permit! Most people will get 2 o 3 estimates on the project but what are they gonna do take the lowest bid! If you people want to rip onus contractors who work in the blazing sun 5 days a week go ahead but dont throw out contractors names for their bad work! Suck it up and contact a good contractor who has the credentials of doing a good job!

  10. Sooooo mad..... says:

Okay….seriously……now the name calling and the mud slinging again…..
I work in the court house…..and many times I see homeowners or people who hired contractors come in and try to file a complaint….they can’t…you know why….because of the laws that contractors have for them….they can do crappy jobs….and they can give their “word”….but their “word” is not considered a contract…..so to any homeowner…or anyone who is planning on hiring a contractor….get EVERYTHING in writing…..their “word” is not considered a contract…even though one would think that in this small town….your ‘WORD” should be the contract.
So….as I do work in the court house…and I do get to hear many many many horror stories from homeowners about bad contractors…..DNCI has been named in a few of those……may not be in the court docket…but I have heard about their “word”……and it stinks…..just like bad breath.
This message is not affiliated with any homeowner and is solely the opiinion and knowledge of the author.

  11. Builder 1 says:

The truth is that homeowners in Antigo are notorious for being cheap! Most contractors or at least the good ones have made their living outside of town. We can’t even compete against the non insured cheap rates of some of these guys. But cheap is what the want so cheap is what they get. Then cry bloody murder when a subpar job is done. As always you get what you pay for.

  12. Realy?????? says:

Really????? $57,000 for a garage…..a room between the house and garage….that’s cheap????…..we paid for top quality……not cheap dude……now we will be paying another 5 grand for the top quality work to be re done because of the sub par work done…by the sub par contractors…who by the way did not keep their word……and they proclaim to be a family business that don’t screw people……”we’ll take care of you” BS…….three years later…..this company still hides behind the skirt of his attorney….cryin like a Nancy boy because he can’t afford to fix it and it wasn’t his fault…….oh…and hey claim to be insured also……BS…the insurance they have is not to cover their a$$es from doing $hitty jobs….it covers any major catastophes like stom damage while building…….being fully insured doesn’t mean crap……because this contractor surely “skirted” his way around fixing his BAD work.
WE paid dearly for top quality…..and got less then sub standard quality in return…..

  13. Buzz Reader says:

Good Lord… I officially am done reading the Antigo Buzz. From Albus’s constant sarcasm and bit*hing to everyone else’s slander, heresay and complaining, this is the saddest home town blog I have EVER come across. We wonder why this town is dying? Take a look in the mirror. Anyone wanting to move here who might come across Antigo Buzz is going to instantly change their mind, and I can’t say I blame them. Maybe instead of the CONSTANT criticism and whining, we could start talking about some of the POSITIVE’s of Antigo. Like our wonderful football team (go Robins!), and Music in the Park, and the Boys and Girls club and the Resource Center. COME ON PEOPLE, this town, state and country are NEVER going to change with all the negativity festering in all of our hearts. PLEASE, for every negative post you make, maybe find it inside yourself to post something good… even if its as minor as the good hamburger you ate at one of the local restaurants. We have to start somewhere!!!!

  14. BUZZZZZZZZ....... says:

Okay….we have established that the conracotes in this town suck…and can’t keep their word…..
Now on a positive note….as BuzzReader so nicely put……
ElTiquila is an awesome most delightful place to go eat…..friendly….super service…and reasonable price……
Nona at Menards……is the best customer service person in the windows and doors department….she is nice, curteous, and super helpful.
Kwik Trip…well the service there is always friendly…and most especially happy.
    There…..positive places to go……

  15. Lenny says:

I really do hope this thread is the beginning of the end for antigobuzz. I haven’t been reading as long as some, but there was a time this was a good place for dialog. But for a while now, it’s just been a soap box for a few people to rant about the things they dislike. There hasn’t been meaningful dialog in months. The content lately has been 50% rumor, 25% slander, and 25% fact.

  16. simplemind says:

Well, it happens and usually it only takes a few to totally mess up a site.. However, if you start strict moderation, then it becomes a boring site.

I prefer less censorship and it is up to us to filter out the good and bad posts.

There are some good business owners in the area. Like the Ourada’s who ran Dixie and 5th Avenue forever. Stimac’s who own BB Jacks. Kwik Trip has been an asset to the community. There are people who work at Menards who are class acts.. Good family run plumbing and heating businesses.. Nice people at Sears who take time to answer all your questions. Noskowiak has done an exellent job fixing my lawn mower. Dewans did a great job fixing my vaccum. Yes there are good people in the area who should be recognized.

  17. BUZZZZZZZZ....... says:

Simplemind…….I agree…..and maybe we should rave more about those people…..but I do understand the point of this homeowner who obviously got very taken by DNCI or Dave Nicholson Consruction….whover they are now…..
I understand they want to warn consumers not to trust them as they trusted what was once a reputable company.
Lenny……I get that you want to come on here and hear all happy and joyful things…..but sometimes…..in this small community….we have to stick together and warn people about bad companies….
This does not appear to be rumor abut DNCI or Dave Nicholson…the pictures do speak volumes…..as far as slander…it is only slander if the words spoken are not true…..the pictures do give a very good indication that Dave and Clint Nicholson did a very BAD job…..I have known them for years….and quite frankly I am disgusted at their workmanship and behavior.
Homeowner…..it is too bad that this happened to you as I would be just as angry and probably want to warn people too.
On a positive note….simplemind…..yes there are really very honest nice and genuine good family companies still out there…..in this town…….so let’s all get together and weed out the bad…and flourish the good.

  18. movingforward says:

All I have to say is wow! Was the foundation done by DNCI as well?

  19. Common Knowledge says:

Yes, The concrete, frostwall and structure were done by them. Wait until we start the garage this spring,,, we will have some depressing pictures of their construction.

  20. RE: Movingforward... says:

Unfortunately……yes….because Dave Nicholson Construction had a local reputation for his work…they did the gargage…the basement…as well as the breezeway…….the garage floor is our next REdo next year as the shingles are falling off…and the garage floor is so cracked that the concrete is coming up and we are on sand…..but……hopefully….after we spend thousands more to re do the crappy work that Nicholsons DID NOT stand behind……we will have the new construction we origianlly paid for.
And DNCI is now owned by Clint….who did not take on ANY responsibilty or liabity that his father did…even though Clint was the one who did this frostwall……or half of it anyway…and filled the rest of the wall with tar paper. Do you need any tar paper by the way? I have plenty.

  21. movingforward says:

Dang, very sorry to see that. It is things like this that give all of us contractors a bad rep. It looks like he made a mistake on the foundation and tried to cover it. Tough tough deal there.

  22. Betty says:

Talk about crooks land lords. We rent this house for a yr. When sewer started backing up ankle deep and pipes breaking in ceiling finding mold under a drop ceiling. I called the land lord and here some of the things they said 1. How did that happen 2. The house is old 3. We have no money to fix it. But they have money to buy a new bussiness and collect rent but have no money to fix it. Now I h ave a 83 old mom and a 13 yr old daughter who I take care of and now have to move again because of all this crap. CROOKS I think antigo is made of crooks. I have to do all the moving myself because when people come to me for help and I help but when it is time I need their help no can do. The best thing to do is report these crooks and keep on reporting

  23. ddddd says:

I say A BUSINESS BUZZ LIST is a great idea. Good or bad. And yes, REAL names should be posted by whoever makes a comment.

  24. enough says:

You know there is something else businesses shouldn’t be able to do is change their name repeatedly. What are they hiding? There is that insurance company over in the kc bagel building that seems to enjoy buying new signs yearly. Whats the deal with that?

  25. A Tatro says:

You know, there are crooked people in any town, not just Antigo. We had Del Nicholson build our home 22 years ago and never had any problems. Can’t speak for Dave-never did any work for us. It’s one thing to tell people of problems with contracters, landlords, etc. It’s another thing to constantly complain about Antigo. I am personally very proud to be from here and have lived here all my life. If people do shoddy work, take it up with them and post about it and then let it be. A list of good people to hire or good businesses is a good idea-as long as it’s valid. In the meantime, lets try and be more positive about our town-we have many things to be proud of and if we don’t-whose fault is it?

  26. Chihuahua says:

Lot’s of good contractors and businessmen in Antigo

  27. Senseless says:

    ****************** D N C I *********************

    DAVE AND ESPECIALLY “CLINT”

    YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED.

AND DAM DISRESPECTFUL WITH YOU BROKEN PROMISES.

  28. MaggieDontTwoStep says:

I used to live in a city where they had an actual soapbox bolted to the ground in a public area that people could stand on and have their “say” about whatever was getting their goat at the moment. Comical, sometimes. Annoying, possibly. But, in this world there is a right place for everything, and I dare say that providing a space for a good wholesome rant can help diffuse some frustration…and possibly provide a little comic relief.

Perhaps we could set up a “SOAPBOX” section on this blog. That way, people can leave their rants in the designated area, and anyone who doesn’t want to hear it doesn’t have to click on it.

For what it’s worth, finding a good contractor for residential work can be challenging no matter where you live–and believe it or not it is MUCH WORSE in larger cities. In the last two years, I have had some very nice work done on my house in Antigo, at a reasonable price and in a reasonable time frame by a number of different independent contractors. This may sound like baloney to some, but I do pray about choosing contractors wisely. I also pray for an extra dose of patience before and during the process, and I’ve found that if you treat your carpenter with a lot of kindness and patience, being sure to notice the GOOD, the craftsmanship often rises to a higher level.

  29. Happy Joe says:

    Hey Crackhead

Maybe you should talk to ‘Digger’ himself. He has done work for me for over 30 years and he has always treated me right. I would not have anyone else do my work. He is #1–for quality and price, more honest they don’t come. So give him a call….I am going to!

  30. Without_doubt says:

I have had Digger do a 2 major work projects for me. I find him to be excellent in workmanship and honesty. I am sure there is an explanation.
