Yesterday I needed gas, car was running on fumes the way it was. My wife and I pulled into the Summit Lake Gas station in the middle of the day. The store was locked, no lights, and no pumps on. I barely made it to Antigo, but I did..
What happened to the Summit Lake Quick Mart?
I always liked the owner, and always preferred to buy gas there over all of the other places, the owner was always involved with organizations in the community, and did a lot for Summit Lake Little League, they also made great homemade pizzas. If they went out of business, that would be sad.
********************UPDATE 11/07/2011**************
According to an article in the Antigo Daily Journal on October 4, 2011, the BP Summit Lake Gas Station has been reopened.
A search for the article online yielded no results.
.

The current Antigo Daily Journal has a local convenience store advertised for sale in the classified section. (other than Sikora’s in Neva). The ad states it takes $50,000 to buy the inventory. That might be your answer.
Word is from Summit Lake folks that the owner has went belly up and a new owner will be coming in.
that’s sad. My guess is, unless you are a member of the Antigo Cartel (Wagner, Draeger), your chances of operating your own Ma and Pa gas station are slim to none. What kind of profit can you make on gas? Maybe 1 or 2 cents a gallon? Then credit card companies charge a fee for every transaction.
A person buys 10 gallons of gas. The gas station makes 20 cents, but pays the credit card company 40 cents for that pay at the pump transaction. Not really a winning formula. Electricity and maintenance on the pumps too..
It’s a sad sight. I use to live (parents still live) within walking distance of this gas station. I remember my childhood days of walking or riding my bike there to fuel up on some soda or snacks. Word from the locals is that the owner just couldn’t make any money anymore and gave up – handed the keys to the bank. Hopefully it will open back up with a new owner.
A couple from Duffeks is running it with the wife’s son running it during the day. Nice to see it is up and running. Hoping it stays…need a place for gas for the snowmobiles!
