Mobil Gas Station by Fairgrounds Closed

I drove through the Mobil Mart to see what is going on there. It looked as though the place was closed, and that has been confirmed. In the windows there are signs stating that they are, in fact, closed. There is also a note in the window that says something to the effect of, “If you have any questions, call the Antigo Police Dept.” The shelves are empty inside and it looks pretty well cleaned out.

I’m not sure what exactly the deal is here and there may be some interesting news to come on what happened. About 2 weeks ago or so, I noticed 4 police cars in the parking lot. I thought maybe there would be something in the Journal about it, but, so far, there hasn’t been. I hadn’t paid much attention after that evening when the police were there, but, I am sure it wasn’t long after that and the place was closed. I heard that the owner had been struggling financially to keep it open, and so it may just be some kind of coincidence. I will be keeping my eye out for something in the news about it.

****************UPDATE 10/11/08**********

According to the article in the Antigo Daily Journal, the Northside Mobil station will be re-opening.  Excerpt from the Journal article:  “Sembhi One, Inc., formerly Northside Mobil, will get the necessary beer and cigarette licenses to allow the station to reopen after being shuttered for several months.”

Beer-eze Bar & Grill Now Open

While driving through town this evening, the parking lot was full at the new business in the former Weekends/Rookies building. The “Open” sign was shining brightly. There has been quite a bit of activity going on there in the last few weeks. The work done on the exterior looks great and I wouldn’t be surprised if the interior has had some remodeling done also. So, go give it a try and feel free to post about your opinion of the new outfit. If someone can elaborate on the name of the joint, please do.

*******UPDATE JULY 11,2009 *******

Not sure what is happening with Beer-eze, but, there is a “For Sale” realtor sign & also on the actual Beer-eze sign, it says For Sale or Lease.  Apparently they are closed.  There have been rumors that they planned on re-opening with a different name, but, not sure why they would have it for sale then.

Antigo Cafe Now Closed

Antigo Cafe Now Closed — NOW REOPENED

Another downtown Antigo business has now closed its doors. Antigo Cafe is no longer in operation. It is a little ironic really, Arby’s opens up and the cafe closes. I sure hope this doesn’t become a trend.

Speaking of restaurants, and on a happier note, Two Angels Restaurant will be closing for a week or so I am told, to do some serious remodeling. Sometime in January this is to take place. It is refreshing to see that some businesses are doing well enough to improve, instead of go under!

So, add another empty building to the downtown city block where Antigo Cafe had operated. If this continues, maybe the whole downtown area will become vacant and we get some federal funding to turn it into some type of “historical” area. Maybe then it would look a little nicer?

**************UPDATE 04/03/08*************

The Cafe is now Open again. It has been renamed to: The Corner Cafe. Their hours are: 6am – 7pm Monday thru Thursday, 24 Hours on Friday & Saturday, and Sundays 6am until 7pm.

**************UPDATE 04/16/2010***********

The Corner Cafe is no longer open.  There is now a For Lease sign in the window.

Holiday Inn Express Coming to Antigo

Holiday Inn Express Coming to Antigo

According to the Antigo Daily Journal, plans are a go for a new Holiday Inn Express to be built on Antigo’s north side. While I don’t feel the need to complain about this project, I do wonder how it will do and if it will still be functioning in 15 years. Certain times of the year, yes, Antigo does attract visitors, but, majority of the year, no, Antigo does not. Which is exactly what we need – activities and events to attract visitors. If more industry doesn’t come into Antigo soon, I’m afraid more and more residents will leave the area. There are too few companies that pay a decent wage in this town. The ones that do, fill up fast. I really don’t think the wages for working at a Holiday Inn are going to be an improvement over what is currently here. And of course, instead of using existing empty buildings, they are going to build it. So, probably 20 years from now (if that long) it will be another eyesore waiting to be tore down.

More Antigo downtown businesses closing

Memory Lane Scrapbook & Stamp Shoppe

Well, looks like downtown Antigo will be more vacant soon, with Memory Lane closing their doors. How sad is that?

Memory Lane hasn’t been in business very long either. I thought scrapbooking was a pretty big deal nowadays? I have heard of a lot of people getting into that recently, so this is a surprise to me.

Looks like downtown Antigo will be a ghost town sooner than expected.

Note: The original post included info that Neve’s Furniture was also closing, but, apparently that was false information :)

Arby’s coming to Antigo

As most residents know, there is a sign in front of the Draeger gas station north of town that says something about future site of Arby’s. I am looking forward to this. I think it’s good to have a variety of fast food stops in town. I was pretty upset when Taco Bell was closed and I am hoping that they will open up again somewhere in town. I would also love to get a Wendy’s! I heard rumors in the past about Taco Bell going into the old Kentucky Fried Chicken building, but, haven’t seen any progress on that, so I doubt that it was true. If anyone knows any different, let’s hear it!

What’s going into the Old Kmart building?

I have heard some rumors lately that there is a new business going into the old Kmart building north of town. First, I heard it was going to be Shopko, and then Goodwill?

Anyone know for sure what the deal is?

I, for one, sure hope it’s Shopko! I think Walmart needs the competition.

Old McMillion/Hennigan’s Hotel

McMillion Hotel – Hennigan’s Hotel

I am glad to see this eyesore gone, but, in some ways it saddens me. I think the old buildings help to remind us of what downtown Antigo used to be like. There are so many empty buildings now and it would be nice to see some shops and retailers in the downtown. It’s great that we have a Walmart and the other businesses north of town, but, that small town appeal does not apply to that area. You can’t window shop at Walmart, Fleet Farm or Menards.

At this point, I don’t think the gaping hole where the hotel was is any better than the old building itself. The remaining neighboring buildings are old and shabby looking also. How long will it look the way it does now? I do realize that the McMillion was a public hazard and had to be torn down, but I sure hope that something is done with the property soon.
