Fire Blazes at BlackJack Steakhouse on Christmas Night

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

It will not be a surprise if the building is considered a complete
loss.  The flames were extremely high and firefighters were
battling the blaze for quite some time.  Christmas night will
hold some not-so-good memories for the Nueske family.

I am sure that the cause will be given later.  The BlackJack
Steakhouse has been a wonderful fine restaurant for MANY
years in Antigo.  A very sad occurrence.

Kayla Berg Missing for Two Months

Kayla Berg Missing for Two Months

Hope Sprenger has been wearing a cross necklace everyday for the past two months, a present from her missing daughter. She says she’ll continue to wear it until she comes home, “I have no idea. It’s like she just vanished.”

Hope’s 16-year old daughter Kayla Berg has been missing since August 11th.missing-kayla-berg

“She did not run away. That’s my true gut feeling it’s not in her nature,” says Hope.

Kayla grew up in Antigo and her mom says there’s no way her happy, outgoing daughter would have left without telling anyone. According to Hope, Kayla went missing while visiting her father in Wausau. The Antigo Police Department is calling Kayla missing and endangered.

“Everybody’s dedicated to the cause and we hope that we can bring her home safe,” says Captain Nate Musolff of the Antigo P.D. He says they have at least one person working on this case everyday. He says they also receive tips from the community constantly, “Community is aware of it and everyone’s chipping in to and doing what they can to help us locate her.”

Hope and Captain Musloff say Kayla’s entire family and the Antigo community are working hard to find her. They both say no one involved will rest until they do.

“We’re not going to quit until we come up with what happened. It’s hard to say when that will happen, but at some point we’re going to figure this out,” says Captain Musolff.

“She is my single motivation. She’s what gets me up every morning,” says Hope.

Hope adds she gets through the days by working to find her daughter, but it’s not easy, “It’s just a nightmare, like I can’t, I can’t wake up. It’s a living nightmare.”

A nightmare Hope says she will only wake up from when Kayla comes home.
If you have any tips on Kayla Berg’s whereabouts, the Antigo Police Department asks that you call

To do so you can call Crimestoppers at 715-627-NAIL or the Antigo Police Department at 715-627-6411

Kayla is 16-years-old, she has brown hair and eyes, she is 5 feet two inches tall, she weighs about 108 pounds, has pierced ears and a pierced navel and has scars on the right side of her nose and her right shin.

A Benefit was held for Kayla, which you can read about here.

Breaking News… and Broken News (by Albus)

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Here’s a story reported by The Wausau Daily Herald, posted on
the web HERE, and reproduced here as an instructional citation:

A 20-year-old man fled from officers after a traffic stop in a busy

neighborhood shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday, Wausau Police
Lt. Bill Kolb said.

Nikolas Simonson of Wausau was a passenger in a car that was
stopped by an officer because of a report of a reckless driver in
the area.

Simonson ran for a few blocks and hid inside a stranger’s house
in the 300 block of Chicago Avenue. Kolb said neighbors pointed
out the direction Simonson ran to officers. He was arrested on
charges of obstructing officers, criminal trespassing and a
probation hold.

Officers held Simonson on a violation of his probation because he
was intoxicated, Kolb said.

The driver of the vehicle, Alexander Drake, also was arrested on
charges of first-offense operating while intoxicated. Kolb said
Drake remained in the car during the incident.

Now, here’s the same story, in the style we have come to expect
from the Antigo Daily Journal:

Fleeing from law enforcement officers, Wausau law enforcement
official Police Lt. Bill Kolb said a 20-year-old man was intercepted
on foot and he was arrested in a busy neighborhood and reports
indicated the event occurred before 3 p.m. Saturday.

Being a passenger in a car, law enforcement officers stopped the
vehicle and there was a report suggesting there was a reckless
driver in the area.

Law enforcement officers filed reports indicating that neighbors
suggested where Simonson ran for a few blocks and he hid inside
a stranger’s house entering without the owner’s permission,
suggesting he was arrested for criminal trespass. Obstructing law
enforcement officers, Simonson was arrested on a probation hold
by a law enforcement officer and there were indications that he
was intoxicated.

Remaining in the car while also intoxicated, Kolb indicated the
driver was arrested and without attempting to flee from law
enforcement officers, he was not pursued.

Buckle Up – It’s the Law! (by Albus)

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

According to the Wausau Daily Herald (the closest thing we
have to a newspaper with due diligence in journalistic practices
and editorial methods), the new seatbelt law goes into effect
today. You can read the story here.

You can now be stopped and ticketed for not wearing a
seatbelt, or for allowing your passengers to forego seatbelts, or
for having that toddler of yours perched up on the console
between the bucket seats of your rumble-buggy pickup truck.
It used to be that you had to be stopped for some other
violation first, before the cops could give you a ticket for
seatbelt ignorance. Now a dangling belt buckle is cause
enough, all on its own.

Wisconsin seatbelt-wearing compliance is about 73%, a bit
below the national average of 85%. I would estimate, based on
direct observation, that compliance in Langlade county runs
about 48%. That means if our cops are on their toes, Antigo
can create a local economic recovery plan without state or
federal support! We’re gonna be rich!

Antigo Man Charged in Heroin Death

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Kevin Krugel, 31, of Antigo is being held in Lincoln County Jail
on charges of first degree wreckless homicide and delivery of a
controlled substance.  Mr. Krugel is being charged in relation to
the death of Nicole Hedges, 29, of Tomahawk.

According to news reports from Antigo Daily Journal and Local
News Channel 7, Kevin Krugel had supplied Nicole Hedges with
heroin, which was ruled later to be the cause of her death.

I never thought I would see the day that heroin would be a
problem in our area.  I understand that there has been a major
problem with prescription drugs, and apparently that is how the
heroin problem began.  The street cost of prescription drugs is
far more than that of heroin, but the effects are similar.  Another
issue being that doctors are becoming aware of such addiction
problems and are curbing their prescriptions.  This means less
prescription drugs on the street and more people looking for other
ways to get that “high”.

It is very disturbing to think about a drug as potent and dangerous
as heroin being in and around Antigo.  The younger generation
will tell you that it can be found “everywhere”.  You can also tell
by the waiting lists to get into programs like the Suboxone clinic,
which is an outpatient rehab-type program here in Antigo.  The
program uses the Suboxone drug which works as an opiate-blocker
to help addicts stop using opiate-based drugs.  This is a
controversial system as some people think you can’t help someone
by using one drug to replace another.

How does a small community like Antigo put a stop to such drug
use?  It is sickening that it takes a death of a young lady in
order to open people’s eyes to it!
